            The Middlebury women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end as the Panthers fell 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 29-27) to UMass.-Boston in an NCAA second-round game at Springfield. Middlebury ends its season at 25-6, second most wins in school history. The Panthers also earned their first NCAA Tournament victory in '10, defeating Polytechnic 3-0 on Friday.

            The match was a tight one, with both teams in all four sets throughout the match. Middlebury came out on top in the first set 25-20, before dropping a pair of tight sets, both by scores of 25-19, as the Beacons took a 2-1 lead. The Panthers had a few chances to put away the fourth set, but the set continued past 25, as UMB eventually pulled out the 29-27 win to claim the match.

            Sophomore Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) led Middlebury with 15 kills, followed by junior Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) with 14 and senior Whitney Bean (Waukee, Iowa) with 11. Sophomore Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) earned a team-high 25 digs, followed by Handel (17), first-year player Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) (12) and senior Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) (12), who added 44 assists.

            Third-seeded Middlebury picked up its first-ever NCAA Tournament win when the Panthers cruised to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-13) victory over sixth-seeded Polytechnic (N.Y.) (20-20) on Friday.

            Jarchow led the team with nine kills, Gibbs added eight with a .353 hitting percentage, while junior Elissa Goeke (Chevy Chase, Md.) hit at a .417 clip with six kills. C. Barrett earned a team-high 15 digs, followed by sophomore Sarah Studwell (Pittsford, N.Y.) with nine and Handel with seven. Gibbs added five services aces and three blocks.

            C. Barrett earned All-Tournament team honors at the conclusion of the weekend.
