The Middlebury College women’s cross country team won its sixth NCAA Championship and the 31st for Middlebury College since 1995. Middlebury head coach Terry Aldrich ends his 36-year career at the College in style, going out as a national champion. The Panther men were making their first-ever appearance at the championship event, placing 21st overall.
The Panther men’s soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss at Bowdoin in the NCAA Quarterfinal round. Middlebury was making its third trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals in the last four years and finish the season with a 16-4-1 mark, the second-most wins in school history.
Senior Ryan Wholey (Pelham, N.H.) scored 21 points on 9 of 13 shooting to lead Middlebury to an 86-62 win at UMass.-Dartmouth to capture the host school's tournament. Junior Ryan Sharry (Braintree, Mass.) earned tourney M.V.P. honors, while Wholey and senior Andrew Locke (Seattle, Wash.) were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Middlebury College women's basketball team captured the SUNY-Brockport tournament by topping the hosts 81-71 in the title game. Senior Lauren Sanchez (Seattle, Wash.) earned tournament M.V.P. honors, while junior Brittany Perfetti (Clifton Heights, Pa.) was named to the All-Tournament team.
Middlebury out shot Hamilton 49-22 on its way to a 3-0 road win in the season-opener for both teams. Senior Alexi Bloom (Highland Park, Ill.) made 22 saves to earn the shutout.
The men's and women's swimming and diving opened up their seasons with a meet at Conn. College vs. the Camels and Tufts, as well as a road meet on Sunday at Springfield. The women defeated Tufts, while falling to Conn. and Springfield, while the men dropped all three contests.
Middlebury was shutout in its season-opener for the first time since 1940, as they fell at home to Tufts, 3-0. Williams accomplished the feat 70 years ago, topping the Panthers 6-0. Middlebury leads the all-time series with the Jumbos 16-2-3, with Tufts earning a 3-3 tie in the opener a year ago.
