WOMEN’S HOCKEY ENDS SEMESTER 6-0

December 6, 2010

The Middlebury College women’s hockey team ended its semester with a perfect 6-0 record as the Panthers earned a 3-0 shutout victory over Williams (1-5, 1-4). Seventh-ranked Middlebury improves to 5-0 in league play, alone atop the NESCAC standings. Senior netminder Alexi Bloom (Highland Park, Ill.) made 10 saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season, as Middlebury held a 33-10 shots advantage.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead with a power play goal 6:39 into the game. Just four seconds into a power play, senior Heidi Woodworth (Princeton, N.J.) won a face-off back to sophomore Heather Marrison (Brewster, N.Y.), who scored from the point with a wrister. The period ended with five penalties as the Panthers were 1/3 and the Ephs were 0/2 on the power play.

Middlebury doubled its lead with a goal 10:57 into the second period. After a blocked shot on the defensive end, junior MacKenzie Stevens (Vail, Colo.) played the puck up to Marrison, who found sophomore Maggie Woodward (Dover, N.H.) on the right wing for a two-on-one. Woodward elected to shoot as she cut to the goal, with her wrister deflecting into the back of the net past Catherine Tremble (10 saves) for the 2-0 lead.

Williams had its best chance to score with 2:57 left in the period when Sam Weinstein and Eliza Foster worked a two-on-one. Weinstein attempted to score from point-blank range on the left side as Bloom slid across the crease to make the save.

Middlebury gained some breathing room in the third period, when Marrison scored her second power play goal of the game. After gathering a loose puck in the slot, Marrison quickly fired a shot past Tremble for the game’s final goal.
