WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL HAS A BUSY WEEK

The Panther women's volleyball team played three matches over the weekend at the Amherst Classic Tournament. Middlebury opened with a 3-1 (27-27, 23-25, 25-18, 24-26) loss to Coast Guard. Sophomore Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) led the offensive attack with 14 kills, followed by first-year player Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) with a dozen. Sophomore Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) earned 38 digs in the match, junior Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) had 18, while Jarchow added 17. Junior Elissa Goeke (Chevy Chase, Md.) earned four block assists in the contest, while senior Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) had 38 assists.
The following day, Middlebury dropped another tight match, this one a 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-18, 9-15) decision to Brandeis. Handel had a big match offensively with 23 kills to go along with her 20 digs. C. Barrett added 29 digs in the match, senior Whitney Bean (Waukee, Iowa) had four blocks, while L. Barrett earned 58 assists.
The weekend concluded with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-12) win over Westfield State. The balanced attack saw Bean with six kills, while Gibbs and Handel added five apiece. C. Barrett had 16 digs in the win, while rookie Courtney Shepard (Centennial, Colo.) dished out 21 assists.
Earlier in the week, the Panthers topped Union 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-14) in Pepin Gym. Handel paced the offense with eight kills, while C. Barrett added 17 digs. Jarchow added six kills in the match, while Handel had nine digs. L. Barrett earned 27 assists and three service aces in the match.
