The Middlebury College football team held off a late charge by Wesleyan, earning a 24-21 win over the Cardinals on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The game was the season-opener for both teams, with the Panthers earning their third straight win over the Cardinals.

The Panther cross country teams raced at the Williams Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The second-ranked Middlebury women won the 19-team race with 57 points, followed by Williams in second place with 76. The Panther men came in fifth overall with 137 points in the 18-team race, while M.I.T. won the event with 90 points.

The Middlebury College men's soccer team improved to 46-3-4 all-time vs. Norwich, handing the Cadets a 7-0 loss en route to its third straight win at home on Wednesday.

The Panther men's tennis team returned to action after a week off, taking part in the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Williams College. The tourney features a 64-man singles bracket and a 32-team doubles competition.

Senior Annie Rowell (Craftsbury, Vt.) scored just 1:06 into overtime to lift Middlebury to a 2-1 victory over Bowdoin in a NESCAC match-up on Kohn Field. The goal was the first of the season for Rowell and the 18th of her career.

The Panther women's golf team returned to action at the Mt. Holyoke Invitational over the weekend. Middlebury finished sixth with a 658 in the 13-team event, with Williams taking home the title with a two-day total of 615.

The Middlebury College men's golf team turned in a solid second place tie among 18 teams at the Williams Invitational over the weekend. The Ephs, who shot 640 last weekend at the Duke Nelson, fired a 591 to win the two-day event. The Panthers came in with a 611 as did Manhattanville to finish in a tie for second place.

The Panther women's volleyball team played three matches over the weekend at the Amherst Classic Tournament. Middlebury opened with a 3-1 (27-27, 23-25, 25-18, 24-26) loss to Coast Guard. Sophomore Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) led the offensive attack with 14 kills, followed by first-year player Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) with a dozen.

In another top 10 national battle, #7 Bowdoin picked up a 1-0 road win at #10 Middlebury on Saturday afternoon. Ella Curren scored on a penalty corner at the 64:10 mark, as the Polar Bears held off a late flurry by the Panthers.
