A Look Back & A Second Place Finish

6/13/05 - It was another amazing year for Middlebury College Athletics. Six NESCAC Championships, two NCAA titles, four NCAA individual championships and 33 All-Americans. All these results help boost Middlebury to a second place ranking in the annual Sports Academy Director' Cup Series, representing excellence in NCAA play. Williams won the cup, followed by Middlebury, Washington (Mo.), Trinity (Tex.) and Wis.-Stevens Point. Other top NESCAC schools included Amherst (9th) and Bowdoin (19th).

The fall season was lengthy, with several teams advancing far into the post-season. The field hockey team took part in the NCAA title game for the second consecutive year, while the women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA sectionals after advancing to the NESCAC Championship game. The women’s cross country squad continued its dominance, winning the NESCAC and NCAA Regional Championships before placing second at the NCAA’s. The men’s soccer team was solid, advancing to the NESCAC title contest.

The winter saw the men’s and women’s hockey team both win NCAA titles on the same day for the second consecutive year. This year, the men hosted the event in a jam-packed Kenyon Arena, while the women won their title in Elmira. The women’s squash team captured the Walker Cup Championship, while the ski teams placed eighth at the NCAA Championships.

The winter also boasted three NCAA individual champions, beginning with Meghan Hughes, who won the NCAA slalom title. Two Panthers won titles at NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Tessa Truex captured the 1-meter diving championship, while Marika Ross won the 200 fly.

The spring was right on schedule with both lacrosse teams capturing their fifth consecutive NESCAC Championships. The women advanced to the NCAA semi’s, while the men played in the title game. The men’s tennis team came up one win short of repeating as national champions, after winning the NESCAC title. The women’s tennis squad made program history, advancing to the NCAA semifinal round.

The spring saw another NCAA individual champion, as Khristoph Becker won the javelin event at the track & field championships.

Off the field, the “Picking Up Butch” story rose to another level, as the ESPN “SportsCenter” feature earned a pair of Emmy Awards, as well as several other national awards.

Enjoy the summer and look for the fall sports schedules to be posted soon!
