Winter NESCAC Academic Team Announced

The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has announced its 2008 Winter All-Academic Selections. To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached junior academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. A transfer student must have completed one year of study at the institution.

Winter All-Sportsmanship Team Announced

The New England Small College Athletic Conference announced the inaugural Winter All-Sportsmanship Team for each winter sport sponsored by the conference. The All-Sportsmanship Team is composed of one student-athlete from each institution for each sport and is selected by the players and coaches from their respective team for their positive contributions to sportsmanship. The student-athlete selected must be in good academic standing and a member of the team at the conclusion of the season in order to be eligible for selection.

Happy Holidays!

It's been another solid start to the winter season for Middlebury College Athletic teams. The Panthers have a combined record of 31-9-2 as they enter the semester break.

Middlebury returns to action on December 28-29th when the men's basketball team plays in the Land of Magic Tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The men's hockey team hosts the annual Holiday Classic Tournament at the Chip Kenyon Arena on January 4th and 5th. Skidmore battles Lake Forest at 4:00 p.m., while Middlebury hosts Brockport at 7:00 p.m. The consolation and championship games are slated for January 5th at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. The women's host team will host games that Saturday and Sunday as well at 1:00 p.m.

Butch To Appear On CBS Evening News & Boston Globe

The recent republication of “Picking Up Butch” by Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated has helped generate a media buzz once again. Shortly after the article appeared, we were contacted by the Boston Globe for a feature story. The piece is scheduled to appear in the Sunday, November 11, edition of the Boston Globe Magazine section of the Globe.

While a worldwide audience saw an ESPN SportsCenter feature on Butch, millions more will be able to see his story on an upcoming broadcast of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Butch will be featured in Steve Hartman’s “Assignment America” segment, which will air on Friday, November 2.

Butch Varno Initiative gets a boost as SI re-runs Reilly column

Butch needs your help

On March 16, 2007, the apartment that Butch shared with his mother, Helen, was flooded in ankle-deep water. With help from Butch’s friends at Middlebury, the Varnos were able to find transitional housing, supported by the Middlebury Congregational Church.

Middlebury Athletics is pleased to announce the availability of individual and team photos, as well as action shots of its varsity teams. Beginning the the fall of '07, area photographers will be shooting events and posting them to websites where you can browse and purchase various photos.

Fall Teams Return To Campus

Almost 300 Middlebury College students have returned to campus with the start of the fall sports season just around the corner. Practicing are underway, with the season opening up on Saturday, September 8th. On that day, the men's and women's soccer teams, along with the field hockey team will host Connecticut College at 1:30. The cross country teams will race at the Williams Dual on that day.

Middlebury Finishes Second In Directors' Cup - Year In Review

After another impressive season, Middlebury College has finished second in the U.S. Sports Academy Director’s Cup race. The Panthers have finished in the top three for the past four seasons, with nine top-five finishes in the 12 years the cup has existed. Williams finished in first place, with Amherst in fourth and Tufts in 16th place. Points for the cup are awarded based on excellence in NCAA Tournament play.
