MEN'S HOCKEY RETURNS FROM BREAK WITH A PAIR OF WINS
The Middlebury College men's hockey team returned from the break with a pair of wins at the Middlebury College Holiday Classic. In late December, the Panthers had a good showing at the Concordia Tournament in Montreal. Middlebury defeated the University of Toronto 6-3, fell to the University of Saskatchewan 2-0, before losing the final in a shootout to Concordia, 1-1.
Following the trip, the Panthers hosted Trinity and Hobart at the Kenyon Arena. Middlebury scored two goals in a 44-second span during the early minutes of the third period, en route to a 3-2 win over Trinity.
Trinity opened the scoring at 11:29 as the Bantams took advantage of a giveaway in the Middlebury zone before snapping a shot into the net. Middlebury answered early in the second period as junior Patrick Nugent (Lynnfield, Mass.) ripped home a shot from the left point to tie it at one. The Panthers gained some breathing room early in the third period with a pair of quick goals. Senior Kevin Cooper (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the first goal as he put in a rebound after a shot by senior Mike Velez (S. Windsor, Conn.) from the point. Senior Adam Foote (New Hartford, N.Y.) scored from the left face-off circle with a wrister to the five-hole to give Middlebury a 3-1 lead with 15:35 left to play. Trinity made it a one-goal game at 7:47 as they stuffed home a shot, driving from the left wing. That would be the game's final tally as the Panthers out shot the Bantams 23-18 on the night. Sophomore Yen-I Chen (Rigaud, Que.) made 16 saves in goal.
On Sunday, Cooper scored the game-winner on the power play 11:20 into the third period as the Panthers beat Hobart 3-1. Cooper tallied the goal on a rebound after a shot from the left point by senior Andrew Helming (Sharon, Conn.) on the power play. Middlebury took a 1-0 lead at the 7:39 mark of the first period with a power play goal from Nugent. Junior Tim Graham (N. Reading, Mass.) made a nice cross-ice pass to Nugent on the left wing before he one-timed the shot into the net. The game would remain scoreless for the next 37:40 until Hobart got on the board at the 5:18 mark of the third period. Cooper scored the game-winner at 11:20, while sophomore Jeff Smith (Nepean, Ont.) added an empty-netter to seal the 3-1 win with 19 seconds remaining. Senior Marc Scheuer (Pt. Claire, Que.) made 16 saves on the night.
