WOMEN'S HOCKEY WINS TWO OF THREE

The Middlebury College women's hockey team won two of three games last week, all of them taking place at the Keynon Arena.

The week began with a 2-0 win over Lake Forest, as Middlebury out shot the Forresters, 41-6. First-year player Abby Kurtz-Phelan (Denver,

Colo.) and junior Lorna Gifis (Princeton, N.J.) each scored for the Panthers, while Gifis added an assist. Senior Kati Madouros (White Plains,

N.Y.) made six saves in goal for the shutout.

In a battle of two of the nation's top teams, #1 Elmira topped #6 Middlebury, 2-1. The Panthers out shot Elmira 25-19, but had a hard time solving their opponent's netminder.

Middlebury controlled the play early, having four one-on-one opportunities with Racine in the first period, but she was equal to the task. Elmira was first to get on the board at 16:17 with a two-on-one break and a snap shot from the left side. The game remained at 1-0 until the 7:11 mark of the third period when Elmira scored an unassisted goal on the power play with a shot from just left of the slot after gathering a loose puck. Middlebury cut the lead in half late in the period as sophomore Emily Quizon (Chino Hills, Calif.) made a nice cross pass to Gifis, who snapped a shot into the top right corner of the net from the left side. The Panthers had a few chances late with their netminder pulled, but they could not tally the equalizer. Sophomore Kate Kogut (Springfield, Mass.) made 18 stops in net for the Panthers.

It was another top 10 match-up at the Kenyon Arena as #6 Middlebury held on to defeat #4 Wisconsin-Steven's Point, 3-2. The Pointers scored two goals in the game's final 2:36 to make it a one-goal contest. Middlebury out shot UWSP, 25-16 on the night.

Middlebury opened the scoring 5:47 into the game as sophomore Gloria Velez (S. Windsor, Conn.) snapped home a shot from the slot area. Just 2:07 later, rookie Shannon Tarrant (Brookfield, Conn.) struck with a shot from the right point on the power play with a nice feed from Quizon. The Panthers made it a 3-0 game just 1:13 into the second period as senior Jean Butler (W. Hartford, Conn.) scored a similar goal with a feed from senior Heather Wende (Moonachie, N.J.) for the five-on-three power play tally. The game remained at 3-1 until the final minutes when the Pointers made a run. The first goal came after Madouros was unable to clear the puck as it was picked off and put into an empty net. With their netminder pulled, Stevens Point struck again at 19:26 with a shot from the left circle. UWSP could muster up no solid chances in the game's final 34 seconds, leaving Middlebury with a 3-2 win. Madouros played very well in net for Middlebury, making 14 saves on the night.
