WOMEN’S LACROSSE WINS THREE MORE
The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team improved to 5-0 on the season with three wins last week. The Panthers are the top-ranked team in the nation in the latest Division III national poll.
The week began with a 7-5 win over Salisbury in a game played at the University of Maryland. Senior Nuala O'Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) and first-year player Claire Edelen (Sparks, Md.) scored two goals apiece to lead Middlebury to the win. Senior Sarah Grenert (Sewickley, Pa.) made 14 saves in goal.
Two days later, the Panthers took on #4 Gettysburg and came away with a 14-5 win. A big 7-0 run sparked the team in the first half as they took an 11-3 lead into the break. First-year player Kim Walker (Ridgewood, N.J.) led the offense with four goals, while sophomores Michele Bergofsky (Exeter, N.H.) and Elizabeth Renehan (St. Davids, Pa.) each added a pair of goals. Renehan dished out four assists in the win, while Bergofsky and Edelen had two apiece. Grenert made 14 saves in goal for the win.
In their home-opener, Middlebury scored six unanswered goals in the second half on its way to an 11-5 win over Wesleyan in NESCAC action on Kohn Field. After 13:39 of scoreless action, O’Donohoe opened the scoring for Middlebury cutting to the goal with a nice feed from Bergofsky. The Panthers added three more goals to take a 4-0 lead into the halftime break. Middlebury came out firing in the second session, with three goals in the first 6:19 of the half to increase the lead to 7-0. Renehan and junior Beth Seeley (Wayland, Mass.) scored 47 seconds apart to make it a 9-0 game before the Panthers scored two more to take an 11-0 lead with 12:38 left to play. Wesleyan then came alive, scoring the game’s last five goals to make it an 11-5 final. Grenert made seven saves in 50 minutes, while junior Johanna Rosenfield (Brunswick, Maine) made a pair of stops in 10 minutes.

MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM WINS TWO ROAD CONTESTS
The Panther men’s lacrosse team picked up a pair of road wins last week to improve to 5-0 on the season. Middlebury is ranked second in the latest Division III national poll.
At #4 Gettysburg, Middlebury came back from a 4-0 deficit to earn a 10-8 win over the Bullets in Pennsylvania. The Panthers held a 5-4 lead at the break and then took a 9-6 lead into the final stanza before emerging with the win. Senior Charley Howe (Darien, Conn.), junior Mark Foster (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Travis Meyer (Potomac, Md.) each had two goals in the win, while senior Mike Saraceni (N. Syracuse, N.Y.) had a goal and four assists. Senior Eric Krieger (Princeton, N.J.) made 17 saves in goal for the Panthers.
Middlebury scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter on its way to a 10-3 win over Connecticut College. Howe scored four goals in the win, while Foster and Saraceni netted two goals apiece. Saraceni ended the game with six points as he dished out four assists in the game. Krieger made 14 stops in goal.

The Middlebury College softball team went 4-4 in Fort Myers, Florida before sweeping a pair of NESCAC games from Amherst on their return trip north.
The season began with a 5-4 loss to Oneonta. Middlebury led 4-1 before Oneonta scored four in the sixth to pick up the win. Sophomore Victoria Glowacky (Blairstown, N.J.) led the Panthers with a pair of hits and an RBI in the game.
Middlebury took on Bowdoin later that day and came up on the short end of a 6-2 contest. Glowacky had two hits and an RBI in the game, including a double.
The Panthers earned their first win of the season as they scored two in the bottom of the ninth inning of an extra inning contest to pick up a 5-4 win over Bethel. Junior Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.) went 3-5 on the day, while senior Michaela George (Ross, Calif.) had a pair of hits. Senior Lauren Bowe (Milton, Mass.) earned the win, throwing all nine innings.
Middlebury won its second of the day and of the season later as they blanked Lawrence, 4-0. McCarthy threw the shutout, allowing eight hits and striking out four. She also had a pair of hits, as did sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.).
The Panthers faced Colby in a double-header and came up on the short end of 7-6 and 2-1 games. In game one, Middlebury scored two in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough as they came up a run short. Hurd had two hits and an RBI in the game, while sophomore Lauren Battaglia (Framingham, Mass.) earned a pair of hits. In game two, Colby scored in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the 2-1 win. McCarthy went 2-4 on the day with a double.
Middlebury bounced back the next day with 10 runs in the last three innings on its way to an 11-6 win over M.I.T. McCarthy had two hits, including a triple, George also had a pair of hits and three RBI, while junior Lauren Guza (La Canada, Calif.) went 2-4. Hurd had the big blast with a three-run homer. Bowe and McCarthy combined on the win.
Against Thomas College, rookie pitcher Jennifer Williams (Scarborough, Maine) threw a perfect game in a contest shortened to five-innings due to Middlebury’s 8-0 lead. Glowacky hit a grand-slam in the fourth inning, while McCarthy went 4-4 and Guza was 3-4. George also had a pair of hits and two RBI in the contest.
Middlebury returned north to take on Amherst in a NESCAC twin-bill last Saturday. In game one, McCarthy was solid, allowing no runs and four hits, while striking out eight in the 3-0 Panther win. Middlebury scored all of its runs in the sixth with an RBI single from Glowacky and a two-run single from Battaglia.
McCarthy got even tougher in game two, throwing a one-hit shutout, striking out four. Glowacky had two hits in the game, as did Hurd and George.

The Panther women’s tennis team went 5-0 during their spring break trip to the Carolinas. The Panthers defeated Colby 7-2, Carleton 8-1, Barton 7-2, St. Andrews 9-0 and Mt. Olive 5-0 in a shortened match.
Four singles players enjoyed 4-0 records over the break, including senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) juniors Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.) and Sandy Spring (Westport, Conn.) along with rookie Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas). In doubles action, Baker and Smyser were a perfect 5-0, while Spring and first-year player Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.) along with senior Jena Sigel (Purchase, N.Y.) and first-year player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) were all 4-0.

The Middlebury College men’s tennis team played five matches in California over the break. The Panthers defeated Pomona Pitzer 6-1, lost to Vanguard 7-0, topped the University of the South and Occidental 7-0, before falling to Cal.-Santa Cruz 5-2 and topping Cal.-Lutheran 6-1.
Junior Justin Ingoglia (N. Caldwell, N.J.) and sophomore Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) led the squad, both earning 4-0 records on the week. Junior Alex Meditz (Arlington, Va.), sophomore Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) and first-year player George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) each went 3-0 to help lead the Panthers.

The Panther baseball team played 11 games down south, including three NESCAC contests with Williams to end their spring trip.
In the season opener, Middlebury battled back from an 8-2 deficit to pick up a 10-9 win over Western Connecticut. Junior Bryan Lodigiani (Pennington, N.J.) earned the win with five innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run. Sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) and senior Jim Muhlfeld (Darien, Conn.) both went 4-5 in the game, while senior Richard Hightower (Stone Mountain, Ga.) had three hits. Junior Dev Talvadkar (Washington, D.C.) drove in four runs with a pair of hits.
The next day, the Panthers dropped a pair of games to the University of Chicago by scores of 15-14 and 21-4. In game one, Middlebury scored seven runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to cut into a big lead. Middlebury then tied the game in the seventh, only to have Chicago win it in the bottom of the inning. Senior Jake Armstrong (La Jolla, Calif.) went 4-5, while sophomore Andrew Pavoni (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went 3-5 with five RBI and a home run. Talvadkar also had three hits in the game, including a pair of runs scored. Game two was shortened to five innings after Chicago scored 13 runs in the fifth inning. Hightower was 2-2 with two RBI to place the offense.
Middlebury scored eight runs in two innings to pick up an 8-1 win over Union in their only game of the day. Junior Liam Quinn (Waltham, Vt.) was 3-4 on the afternoon, while seven different players had hits in the game. Senior Ben Christensen (Kalispell, Mont.) went the distance, allowing no earned runs and striking out nine over seven innings of work.
Colby took on Middlebury in a double-header with the teams splitting the two contests. In game one, the Mules took a 4-0 early lead and went on to pick up the 7-3 win. Quinn had a pair of hits on the day as did J. Armstrong. In the second game, the Panthers scored five runs in the first inning on their way to the 10-4 win. First-year hurler Chris Solberg (Katonah, N.Y.) earned the win with the complete game, allowing no earned runs over seven innings. Hightower had three hits in the game, including a double, while Pavoni and junior Dave Reister (Appleton, Wis.) each had two hits.
The Panthers split another twin-bill the next day, beating Thomas 12-6 before falling 15-3 in the second game. Middlebury scored three in the bottom of the seventh of game one to pick up the win. Junior Dave Irwin (Carlisle, Mass.) earned the win with two solid innings of relief. Muhlfeld led the Panthers’ 14-hit attack with three, while Riester, J. Armstrong, R. Armstrong and rookie Jocko DeCarolis (Taberg, N.Y.) each had a pair of hits. Thomas scored 11 runs in three innings to cruise to the win in game two. DeCarolis had two hits to lead the Middlebury offense.
Middlebury entered NESCAC play in Florida with a three-game set against Williams. In game one, the Ephs scored two or more runs in the second through sixth innings to pick up the 15-3 win. Lodigiani had two hits in the game, including a solo homer, while four other Panthers had singles.
In game one on day two, Williams held an early 4-0 lead and tacked on a few runs for the 7-1 win. Junior Joe Ramoin (Nederland, Texas) had two hits in the game, while Hightower and Quinn each had a double. In the final game of the series, the Ephs scored five runs in the eighth to pick up a 7-2 win and a three-game sweep. Ramoin had two hits as did Muhlfeld, while R. Armstrong drove in a pair of runs.
