The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team won it’s only game of the week as they improved to 3-0 in the NESCAC and 6-0 overall with an 11-8 win over Wesleyan on Kohn Field. Middlebury is ranked second in the latest Division III national poll.
Middlebury opened the contest with two quick goals in the game’s first 1:28. Senior Andrew Giordano (Washington, D.C.) struck first, while senior Mike Saraceni (N. Syracuse, N.Y.) scored driving to the goal at the 13:32 mark. The teams exchanged the next three goals, the first by Wesleyan’s Glenn Adams at 11:52. The Panthers closed the quarter with a pair of goals to take a 5-2 lead after one. A man-up goal by junior Mark Foster (Denver, Colo.) and a tally from senior Charley Howe (Darien, Conn.) gave Middlebury a 7-3 lead at the break.
Wesleyan cut the lead to 7-4 early in the third quarter before the Panthers ran off three straight in a 3:15 span to take a 10-4 lead. The Cardinals cut it to 10-5 late in the quarter and 10-6 early in the fourth. Middlebury answered at 5:33 with a goal from Giordano, with Wesleyan scoring the game’s last two goals to make it an 11-8 final.
Howe and Foster led Middlebury with three goals apiece, while Saraceni had two goals and two assists. Senior Eric Krieger (Princeton, N.J.) made six saves for the Panthers.

The Panther women’s lacrosse team had a big week as they topped Union 14-5 before earning a 17-10 road win at second-ranked Amherst.
Top-ranked Middlebury closed the game on a 5-0 run as they pulled away for a 14-5 win over Union on Kohn Field. The teams exchanged the game’s first four goals before a 5-0 Middlebury run gave them a 7-2 lead with 10:39 left in the first half. Senior Nuala O'Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) had a pair of goals to spark the run. Union cut the lead to 7-3 before the break and made it a 7-4 game early in the second half. The Panthers answered with a pair of free position goals before Union scored the final goal of the game at the 16:29 mark. Sophomore Schuyler Winstead (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored a pair for Middlebury down the stretch to seal the win. O’Donohoe paced the Panthers with three goals, while sophomores Winstead, Michele Bergofsky (Exeter, N.H.) and Channing Weymouth (Plymouth, N.H.), along with first-year player Claire Edelen (Sparks, Md.) added two apiece. Senior Sarah Grenert (Sewickley, Pa.) made 10 saves in goal for the Panthers.
In the big game at Amherst, O’Donohoe scored seven goals and dished out two assists to lead Middlebury to the win in a game played on the turf at UMass. A four-goal run in the first half gave the Panthers an 8-3 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Amherst battled back, but the Panthers opened the second half with five straight goals to take a 13-5 lead in the first 14 minutes. Middlebury netted four more down the stretch to seal the win. Sophomore Elizabeth Renehan (St. Davids, Pa.) supported O’Donohoe with four goals, while first-year player Kim Walker (Ridgewood, N.J.) netted three. Grenert made a dozen saves in net.

The Middlebury College softball team earned a solid weekend split on the road as they defeated Williams 1-0 in 11 innings, before dropping game two, 4-1.
Junior Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.) was stellar in game one, throwing all 11 innings, allowing just four hits and no runs, while striking out five Ephs. The scoreless battle saw Middlebury’s sophomore Lauren Battaglia (Framingham, Mass.) single in sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.) in the top of the 11th to give the team a 1-0 lead. McCarthy held them in the bottom of the inning to earn the win. Hurd ended the game 3-4, while Battaglia and senior Michaela George (Ross, Calif.) had two hits apiece.
In game two, the Panthers scored in the first inning with an RBI from senior Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo.), driving in junior Lauren Guza (La Canada, Calif.). The Ephs answered with two in the bottom of the first and then added solo runs in the fourth and fifth to seal the 4-1 win. Guza ended the day with a pair of hits to lead Middlebury.

The Panther men’s tennis team fell 6-1 at Division I Dartmouth this week before bouncing back with a 7-0 win over NESCAC foe Tufts.
At Dartmouth, sophomore Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) was the lone singles winner as he picked up a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at #2.
Middlebury had less trouble with Tufts as they won all six singles matches as well as the three doubles contests. Edmunds, sophomore Brian Waldron (Rye, N.Y.), junior Justin Ingoglia (N. Caldwell, N.J.), first-year players George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) and Alex Scott (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.), along with junior Alex Meditz (Arlington, Va.) were all singles winners.
In doubles action Mayer/Ingoglia, Edmunds/Waldron and the team of Scott and sophomore Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) were all victorious.

The Middlebury College track and field teams opened their home season with a meet at the Dragone Track & Field Complex. Both teams won the meet, with Plattsburgh, Union, S. Vermont and Colby-Sawyer participating.
Last week in California, four Panthers had impressive performances at either San Diego State or Cal.-Poly. Junior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) broke two school records, finishing the 800 with a time of 1:55.53 and the 1500 in 4:00.27. Qualifying for the NCAA’s with a time of 53.23 in the 400 hurdles was sophomore Kevin Bright (Sharon, Mass.). Also qualifying was junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.) with a time of 4:36.60 in the 1500 meters. The third qualifier was sophomore Kristoph Becker (Media, Pa.) in the javelin, who bettered his effort with a toss of 197’2” this week.
Several Middlebury athletes won events last week on Dragone Track. First-year athlete Christine Bolger (Edina, Minn.) won both the 200 (27.54) and the 400 (1:00.11). Other winners include sophomore Kirsten Lundgren (Oakland, Calif.) in the 100 (13.41), rookie Beth Butler (Bronxville, N.Y.) in the 800 (2:22.34), senior Margery Glover (Lancaster, Pa.) in the 1500 (5:01.09), first-year runner Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine) in the 3000 (10:47.41), rookie Erin Oliver (Essex Junction, Vt.) in the 100 hurdles (16.63) and senior Maryanne Porter (W. Roxbury, Mass.) in the 400 hurdles (1:06.46).
In field events, first-year athlete Meira Lifson (Edina, Minn.) won the pole vault (9’8”), senior Jessica Kosciewicz (Plaistow, N.H.) placed first in the long jump (15’5”), rookie Laura Keeler (Epsom, N.H.) won the triple jump (31’3.25”), sophomore Renee Courchesne (Hingham, Mass.) tossed 114’4” to win the discus, while senior Jennifer March (Fairbanks, Ala.) won the hammer (145’9”)
On the men’s side, first-year runner Will McDonough (Lancaster, N.H.) won the 3000 (9:16.21), Bright won the 400 hurdles (54.35) and the long jump (21’10”), first-year thrower Bobby Marcoux (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) won the discus (144’8”), while senior Craig Parker (Cohasset, Mass.) won the hammer (150’) and Becker won the javelin (197’02”)

The Panther women’s tennis team had a busy weekend as eight teams competed in the Middlebury Invitational Tournament. The Panthers won two of six brackets, while Tufts won the other four.
First-year player Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas) won the flight “B” singles bracket as she was a 6-3, 3-0 (ret.) winner in the finals. Other singles highlights include first-year player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), who lost in the finals of the “A” singles flight, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. First-year player Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.) lost in the semifinals of the bracket, 4-6, 6-1, 13-11. In flight “C”, junior Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.) advanced to the finals before falling, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action, Roche and senior Jena Sigel (Purchase, N.Y.) won flight “B” by a score of 8-4. The duo of Ross and junior Sandy Spring (Westport, Conn.) lost in the finals of flight “A”, 8-3, while Smyser and senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) fell in the flight “C” finals, 9-8 (7).
