The Middlebury College softball team has now won four straight and currently leads the NESCAC West standings with a 5-1 record.
The week began as the team swept a pair of games at Green Mountain by scores of 7-0 and 7-2. In game one, senior Lauren Bowe (Milton, Mass.) earned the four-hit shutout, while sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.) drove in three runs. Junior Lauren Guza (LaCanada, Calif.) and first-year player Lily Hamburger (Silver Spring, Md.) each had a pair of hits in the win.
First-year pitcher Jennifer Williams (Scarborough, Maine) was the winner in game two, allowing one earned run over seven innings. Senior Michaela George (Ross, Calif.) went 2-3 with four RBI in the contest, while Guza also had a pair of hits.
The Panthers then opened their home season with a twin bill against Wesleyan. In game one, George had a two-run single for the Panthers in the second, while sophomore Lauren Battaglia (Framingham, Mass.) plated George on a sacrifice fly later in the inning for the game's only runs. Junior Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.) picked up the complete game win, allowing just three hits and striking out six batters.
In the second contest, Hurd scored on a double by George after an errant throw in the second inning. Senior Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo.) later singled in George for the 2-0 lead. A two-run triple by Guza gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead after six innings. Wesleyan scratched out a pair of runs in the seventh to make it a 4-2 final. The Panther men’s tennis team picked up two big wins last week as they won 6-1 at Williams before coming home to defeat Bowdoin, 5-2.
At Williams, the Panthers won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles to pick up the win. Sophomore Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) won 6-2, 6-3, sophomore Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) was a 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3 winner, while junior Justin Ingoglia (N. Caldwell, N.J.) earned a 6-2, 6-5 victory. Winning 4-6, 6-3, 1-8 was rookie George Mayer (Merion, Pa.), while classmate Alex Scott (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner. Sophomore Brian Waldron (Rye, N.Y.) lost his match at #2, 6-4, 6-2. In doubles action, Mayer/Ingoglia won 8-4, Beilin/Scott were 8-6 winners, while Edmunds/Waldron lost 8-4.
Against Bowdoin, Waldron fell at #1, 6-2, 6-2, while Beilin dropped his match 7-5, 6-2 at #3. Singles winners included Edmunds 6-1, 6-4, Ingoglia 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4), Mayer 7-6 (2), 6-2 and Scott 6-1, 6-0. Mayer/Ingoglia won 9-7 in doubles action, while Beilin/Scott were 8-3 winners and Edmund/Waldron picked up an 8-3 win.

The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team won two more games last week, including a squeaker over #17 Amherst. The Panthers are ranked second in the latest Division III national poll.
On Monday, Middlebury scored the game’s first eight goals on its way to a 21-2 win over Union on Kohn Field in Middlebury. Thirteen different players scored in the game for the Panthers, led by sophomore Jonathan Sisto (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year player Nick Bastis (Old Greenwich, Conn.) who scored three goals apiece. Senior Mike Saraceni (N. Syracuse, N.Y.) was the top point collector with two goals and four assists, while senior Andrew Giordano (Washington, D.C.) scored a pair and assisted on another. Senior Eric Krieger (Princeton, N.J.) played 30 minutes in net, making a pair of saves.
Middlebury survived a battle with Amherst on Kohn Field as the Panthers came away with a 7-6 win in a back-and-forth contest. Amherst trailed 2-1 before a pair of goals gave them a 3-2 lead at the 5:34 mark. The lead grew to 4-2 at the end of the quarter before Middlebury exploded for four second period goals. Saraceni was in on three of the tallies, scoring the first and third and assisting on senior Charley Howe’s (Darien, Conn.) goal with 1:33 left in the half to make it a 6-4 game at the intermission.
Amherst scored two in the third quarter to make it 6-6 with 3:14 left in the quarter. The game remained tied into the fourth quarter, where Krieger made some huge saves to keep the game tied. A pair of nice saves came on two Amherst man-up opportunities at the 10:03 and 8:50 marks of the quarter. With just over four minutes to play senior Tom O’Connor (Old Greenwich, Conn.) poked the ball away from an Amherst attacker, giving Middlebury a transition opportunity. Senior Dave Leach (New Canaan, Conn.) found junior Mark Foster (Denver, Colo.) on the left side before he made two nice fakes and buried the game-winner with 4:03 left to play. Amherst had one last chance late in the game, but a shot hit the side of the net with five seconds left to play. Foster, Howe and Saraceni led the Middlebury offense with two goals apiece, while Krieger made 13 stops on the day.

The Panther baseball team finally got back into action after its Florida trip as they took two of three at Hamilton in three NESCAC West match-ups.
In game one on Friday, Hamilton held a 1-0 lead before a solo homer by sophomore Andrew Pavoni (Scotch Plains, N.J.) tied the game in the fifth. The game was tied at two heading into the seventh inning where the Panthers plated four runs with two outs. A two-run double from junior Joe Ramoin (Nederland, Texas) sparked the inning. Hamilton scored one late run to make it a 6-3 final. Junior David Riester (Appleton, Wis.) threw eight innings for the win, striking out five. Ramoin and senior Abe Streep (S. Nyack, N.Y.) each had a pair of hits in the game.
Middlebury scored 11 runs in the first three innings in game one on Saturday to pick up an 18-4 win. Senior Jake Armstrong (Plymouth, Mass.) led off the game with a homer to get things going. A two-run double by first-year player Jocko DeCarolis (Taberg, N.Y.) scored two more later in the inning. Ramoin had a two-run double in the second, while sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) and senior Jim Muhlfeld (Darien, Conn.) each had a two-run homer in the third. Muhlfeld struck again in the fourth, this time with a three-run shot to put the game out of reach. Senior Ben Christensen (Kalispell, Mont.) got the win, throwing five innings and striking out four. Muhlfeld ended the day 4-5 with six RBI and four runs scored, while R. Armstrong was 2-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.
R. Armstrong homered in the first inning of game three of the series to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Hamilton answered in the second before Middlebury regained the lead in the third. Hamilton scored three in the third and one in the fifth to earn the 5-2 win. R. Armstrong had two hits in the game as did junior Dev Talvadkar (Washington, D.C.). Sophomore Tyler Bak (Northampton, Mass.) took the loss.

The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team won two more NESCAC games last week as they defeated Tufts and Trinity. The Panthers are the top-ranked team in the latest Division III National poll.
Senior Nuala O'Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) scored three of the team’s six goals during the 6-0 run in the game’s first 14:40. Tufts answered at 13:37 before four different players scored for Middlebury to give them a 10-1 lead at the break. The Jumbos scored the first goal of the second half, but the Panthers answered with three and went on to earn a comfortable 14-5 win. O'Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) led the team with five goals, while sophomore Alison Perencevich (Concord, N.H.), sophomore Elizabeth Renehan (St. Davids, Pa.) and first-year player Claire Edelen (Sewickley, Pa.) added two goals apiece. Senior Sarah Grenert (Sewickley, Pa.) and junior Johanna Rosenfield (Brunswick, Maine) combined to make eight saves in goal for Middlebury.
Middlebury scored three goals in the first 1:24 and never looked back as they held a 9-3 lead at the break. Trinity battled back in the second half, but the Panthers kept a comfortable lead on their way to the 13-7 win. O’Donohoe paced the team with four goals and two assists, while Renehan and sophomore Schuyler Winstead (Chevy Chase, Md.) had two goals apiece. Grenert and Rosenfield combined to make 15 stops in net.

The Panther women’s tennis team defeated Connecticut College 8-1 before falling 5-4 to Amherst on Sunday.
Middlebury won all but one singles match in the team’s convincing win over Connecticut College. First-year player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) was a 6-4, 6-1 winner, junior Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.) won 6-4, 6-1, while senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) came away with a 6-1, 7-6 (1) win. Other winners included first-year player Emily Holick (Sudbury, Mass.) 6-2, 6-2 and sophomore Maren Messing (New York, N.Y.) 6-1, 6-1. In doubles action, Messing/Ross, Roche and senior Jena Sigel (Purchase, N.Y.) along with Baker/Smyser were all winners.
The match was a bit tighter against Amherst as Middlebury jumped out early with doubles wins by Messing/Ross and Siegel/Roche. In singles action, the Panthers lost the #1, 2, 3 and 6 singles matches. Winners were Ready 7-5, 5-6, 6-2 and Baker 6-3, 6-4.

The Middlebury College track and field teams were in action again last weekend as they took part in the Williams Relays.
Leading the women was junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.), who won the 1500 in 4:44.52, while placing second in the 800 with a time of 2:23.40. The other winner on the day was senior Jennifer March (Fairbanks, Ala.) with a toss of 146’ in the hammer. Other athletes earning second place finishes were first-year athlete Meira Lifson (Edina, Minn.), who cleared 10’ in the pole vault, and classmate Mary Frederickson (Florham Park, N.J.) with a toss of 110’3” in the javelin. Placing second in the 10,000 meters was first-year Erin Oliver (Essex Junction, Vt.), with a solid race.
Winning events for the men’s team were junior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) and sophomore Kevin Bright (Sharon, Mass.). Digani won the 1500 in 4:02.16, while Bright won the 400 in 49.84. Placing second in the pole vault was senior Peter Webb (Chapel Hill, N.C.), clearing 11’6”, while sophomore Steve Atkinson (Huntingdon, Que.) threw 160’ to place second in the javelin.
