The Panther men’s lacrosse team played two nail-biters last week as they split a pair of 11-10 overtime games in NESCAC action. Middlebury was ranked second in the latest Division III national poll.
Senior Charley Howe (Darien, Conn.) scored with a low shot from the left side with just seven seconds left in overtime to lift Middlebury to an 11-10 win over #14 Tufts in a NESCAC contest played on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The game was tied at two heading into the second quarter when Tufts scored four straight goals to take a 6-2 lead. Middlebury’s senior Andrew Giordano (Washington, D.C.) answered late in the quarter with a high hard shot from the outside to cut the lead to 6-3 entering halftime. The Panthers came out flying in the third quarter, outscoring Tufts 6-1 on their way to a 9-7 lead entering the final stanza. The six goals were scored in a 7:15 span, with two of them coming from senior Dave Leach (New Canaan, Conn.). The Jumbos had an answer to start the fourth quarter as they scored three straight to take a 10-9 lead. Middlebury tied the game with just 44 seconds left in the quarter as senior Mike Saraceni (N. Syracuse, N.Y.) took a feed from junior Mark Foster (Denver, Colo.) before ripping a low shot into the back of the net. In the overtime, the Jumbos mustered up four shots, with senior Eric Krieger (Princeton, N.J.) making two saves during the overtime period. The Panthers took a timeout with 24 seconds left, setting up Howe’s game-winner. Saraceni led Middlebury with three goals in the game.
Middlebury wasn’t as fortunate at Bowdoin as the Polar Bears scored with 2:31 left in the overtime to pick up the 11-10 win. Coincidentally, Bowdoin was the last NESCAC team to beat Middlebury, just over two years ago. The Panthers led 4-2 after one and found themselves tied at six during the intermission. An even third quarter left the game at 9-9 heading into the final quarter. A goal from Foster gave Middlebury a 10-9 lead with 11:55 left to play, but Bowdoin answered at 7:38. Middlebury controlled the game from there, but could not solve the Bowdoin keeper. Saraceni had a goal and three assists for Middlebury, while Howe, Giordano and Foster had two hits apiece.
