MEN’S GOLF TEAM IN ACTION

The Panther men’s golf team  has had a busy spring as they took part in two tournaments last week to open its spring season. Middlebury placed ninth out of 17 teams at the Williams Spring Challenge on April 17th, before placing fifth of 18 teams at the two-day Palamountain Invitational hosted by Skidmore College./p>

At Williams, junior Derek Singer (Niskayuna, N.Y.) led the team with an 83, followed by first-year players Chad Bellmare (Bedford, N.Y) and James Yonamine (Eden Prarie, Minn.), each with 84's. Coming in with an 87 was sophomore Sean Breen (Far Hills, N.J.), followed by sophomore Mitch St. Peter (San Francisco, Calif.) with an 89./p>

St. Peter paced the team at Skidmore with a two-day total of 158. Bellmare shot a 163, followed by Singer and Breen with 164's, and junior Tim Quinn (Greenwich, Conn.) with a 174./p>

On Saturday and Sunday, Middlebury finished 11th of 12 teams at the Northeast District Shoot-Out hosted by Williams. Bellmare led the team with a two-day total of 161. Breen came in with a 169, followed by St. Peter (172), Singer (179) and Quinn (182)./p>

WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO BOWDOIN

The Middlebury College women’s tennis team ended its regular season with a 7-2 loss at Bowdoin. Senior Sandy Spring (Westport, N.Y.) and first-year player Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.) won their #1 doubles match 8-5, while senior Jena Sigel (Purchase, N.Y.) and first-year player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) won at #2 doubles, 8-6./p>

The Panthers are expected to receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament when bids are announced late Monday./p>

MEN’S TENNIS WINS NESCAC CHAMPIONSHIP

For the first time in school history, the Middlebury College men’s tennis team has won the NESCAC Championship. They did so on the courts of their rivals at Williams College. The Panthers placed first with 29 points, followed by Williams with 26 and Tufts with 15. Middlebury advances to the NCAA Tournament and will host the Trinity vs. M.I.T. match on Saturday. The winner will meet Middlebury on Sunday in the regional final./p>

Sophomore Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) was named the NESCAC Player of the Year, while rookie George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) earned NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors. Head Coach Dave Schwarz shared conference Coach of the Year honors with his colleague from Bowdoin. Earning first-team All-Conference honors were Edmunds and sophomore Brian Waldron (Rye, N.Y.)./p>

The Panthers had a tremendous first two days at the tournament, advancing all singles players and doubles teams in the conference finals on Sunday. In singles action, Waldron won the #2 flight with a 6-3, 6-3 win, while Mayer also won the #4 singles flight by scores of 6-1, 7-5. In doubles action, Edmunds/Waldron won the #3 flight with an 8-4 win./p>

Also advancing to singles finals were Edmunds, sophomore Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.), junior Justin Ingoglia (N. Caldwell, N.J.) and first-year player Alex Scott (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.). In doubles action Ingoglia/Mayer fell in the semifinals of flight #1, while Beilin/Scott lost in the flight #2 finals./p>

TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS WITH SOLID PERFORMANCES AT NESCAC'S

The Panther track and field teams boasted three NESCAC Champions at last weekend’s NESCAC Track & Field Championships hosted by Trinity College. The women placed third overall, while the men came in sixth. /p>

Winning the NESCAC Championship in the 400 hurdles was senior Maryanne Porter (W. Roxbury, Mass.) with a time of 1:05.53. Also capturing a NESCAC title was first-year thrower Mary Frederickson (Florham Park, N.J.), who won the javelin with a toss of 116’. Placing second in the 800 was junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.) with a time of 2:18.41, while senior Molly Yazwinski (Deerfield, Mass.) came in second in the 10,000 in 37:59.14. Middlebury’s 4x800 relay team of Porter, Manzer, senior Margery Glover (Lancaster, Pa.) and first-year runner Claire Schultz (San Francisco, Calif.) finished second with a time of 9:33.20. The other top-four finisher in running events was junior Melissa Thacker (Canton, N.Y.), who placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.27./p>

In field events, senior Jennifer March (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished second overall in the hammer, with an NCAA qualifying effort of 154’. Placing second in the discus was sophomore Renee Courchesne (Hingham, Mass.) with a throw of 130’8”, while sophomore Whitney Creed (Farmington, Conn.) finished ninth in the shot put with a school-record toss of 38’9”. In the pole vault, first-year athlete Meira Lifson (Edina, Minn.) and junior Sarah Berkowitz (Media, Pa.) finished in a third place tie with a 9’6” effort. Rookie Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine) was the other top four finisher with a time of 11:45.64 in the steeplechase./p>

On the men’s side, sophomore Kristoph Becker (Media, Pa.) turned in a spectacular performance with four top-three finishes. Becker won the javelin for the second straight year, this year with a toss of 180’8”. He placed second in the discus (140’) and third in the high jump (6’). Placing third in the javelin was sophomore Steve Atkinson (Huntingdon, Que.) with a throw of 165’2”, while sophomore Matt Engler (San Diego, Calif.) came in fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.81 seconds. The DMR relay team of Becker, juniors Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) and Jonathan Erwin (Rumson, N.J.) and first-year racer Chris Pelliccia (Auburn, Maine) placed third with a time of 10:37.66./p>

SOFTBALL TEAM HEADED TO NESCAC TOURNAMENT

The Middlebury College softball team has now won 13 of its last 14 games and 20 overall (school record) as they prepare for their second straight NESCAC Tournament appearance. The Panthers finished in a first place tie in the NESCAC West with Williams, with both teams sporting 7-1 records in league play. The Ephs won the tie-breaker over Middlebury and will host the tournament this weekend. Middlebury will take on Bowdoin in game one of the double-elimination tournament on Friday at 5:30 p.m./p>

ast week began with 1-0 and 15-1 wins at Lyndon State. In game one, first-year pitcher Jennifer Williams (Scarborough, Maine) threw the shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out nine. She also drove in sophomore Lauren Battaglia (Framingham, Mass.) for the game’s only run. Senior Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo.) had two hits in the game to lead the offense./p>

In game two, Middlebury scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back on its way to the win. Senior Lauren Bowe (Milton, Mass.) was the winning pitcher, allowing no earned runs and just four hits in the five-inning game. Senior Michaela George (Ross, Calif.) and junior Lauren Guza (LaCanada, Calif.) led the offense with three hits apiece, while Williams was 2-4 with four RBI./p>

Next up for the Panthers was a two-game sweep at Skidmore by scores of 8-0 and 12-4. Williams was the game one winner, with six different players earning hits in the game. First-year player Ellen Sargent (St. Albans, Vt.) drove in a pair of runs for Middlebury, while sophomore Victoria Glowacky (Blairstown, N.J.) scored two./p>

Middlebury scored 11 runs in the first three innings of the second game on its way to the comfortable win. Bowe earned the win, while Guza, George and Williams each had three hits. Freyer went 2-4 with a pair of RBI, Battaglia was 2-3 with three runs scored, while junior Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.) went 2-3 with a pair driven in./p>

The Panthers wrapped up their NESCAC regular season with 11-1 and 2-0 wins over Hamilton in a pair of home games. Freyer hit a two-run homer for Middlebury in the third, while Glowacky ended the game with a three-run single in the sixth inning. Freyer ended the day 4-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Guza, Battaglia and sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.) each had a pair of hits. McCarthy earned the win, with six strikeouts in six innings./p>

Middlebury scored just twice in the second game, but that was all they would need for the win. Freyer had an RBI single, while Glowacky walked with the bases loaded. George went 2-3 in the game to pace the offense. Bowe and Williams combined the pitching duties, with Bowe earning the win with four innings of work.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE TO HOST NESCAC TOURNAMENT

The Panther women’s lacrosse team will host the NESCAC semifinals and finals this weekend on Kohn Field. Middlebury will take on Bowdoin Saturday at noon, while Amherst meets Williams in the other match-up at 2:30. The winners meet for the NESCAC title on Sunday at noon./p>

Last week, the Panthers picked up two more wins to finish the regular season at 13-0. Against Williams, the Panthers came out firing once again as they scored the game’s first seven goals. Sophomore Schuyler Winstead (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Nuala O'Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) each had a pair of goals during the run. Williams cut the lead to 7-2 before Middlebury ran off three more tallies to take a 10-2 lead with 8:48 left in the first half. The teams exchanged the last four goals of the half, leaving Middlebury with a 12-4 lead at the break. The lead grew to 14-4 before Williams cut the lead to 14-6. Unfortunately for the Ephs, that would be their final goal for the next 21:22. Middlebury scored seven goals in that span, taking a 21-6 lead before Williams scored late to make it a 21-7 final. O’Donohoe paced Middlebury with six goals and two assists, while Winstead scored five along with an assist. Sophomore Elizabeth Renehan (St. Davids, Pa.) was in on the offense with three goals and three assists. Senior Sarah Grenert (Sewickley, Pa.) and junior Johanna Rosenfield (Brunswick, Maine) combined to make 11 saves for Middlebury./p>

Middlebury had no trouble at Bates as they held a 13-2 halftime lead on its way to an 18-4 win. Winstead led the team with four goals, while O’Donohoe added three goals and four assists. Rosenfield made a dozen saves in goal to pick up the win.

BASEBALL TEAM HAS 3-3 WEEK

The Panther baseball team went 3-3 last week with three non-league games. Middlebury wraps up its NESCAC  play this weekend as they host Amherst at Forbes Field for a three-game set. The winner of the series will advance to next weekend’s NESCAC Tournament at Trinity./p>

The week didn’t start well for Middlebury as they walked 10 and hit six batters as they fell to Skidmore 9-5 in the team’s home-opener. Senior Jim Muhlfeld (Darien, Conn.) had a three-run double for Middlebury, while junior David Riester (Appleton, Wis.) drove in a pair of runs./p>

At St. Michael’s, Middlebury won a slugfest as they scored 13 runs on 16 hits to defeat the Purple Knights, 13-9. Senior Ben Christensen (Kalispell, Mont.) earned the win for Middlebury, while Ryan Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) had a big day at the plate. The sophomore went 4-5 on the day with two doubles, five RBI and a homer. Muhlfeld had three hits on the day, while junior Brian Vickery (Plymouth, Mass.) had a pair./p>

Middlebury returned home to earn a split with Castleton in a pair of Saturday games. Both went an extra inning as Middlebury fell 13-6 in game one before bouncing back to earn a 10-9 win in game two. Middlebury tied the game with a pair in the bottom of the seventh, before Castleton exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning to pick up the win. Riester, Muhlfeld and senior Abe Streep (S. Nyack, N.Y.) each had two hits in the game for Middlebury./p>

In the second game, junior Bryan Lodigiani (Pennington, N.J.) singled in Armstrong with the game-winner in the eighth to lift the Panthers to the win. Riester, Muhlfeld, Lodigiani and junior Liam Quinn (Waltham, Vt.) each had two hits in the game. Muhlfeld and junior Joe Ramoin (Nederland, Texas) each had a pair of RBI, as did sophomore Dom DiDomenico (Oceanside, N.Y.). Muhlfeld earned the win in relief./p>

On Sunday, the Panthers took one of two from Trinity, a team ranked 12th in the latest Division III National poll. In game one, Armstrong had a two-run single and Muhlfeld had a two-run double in the fourth inning for the Panthers. Middlebury added three in the fifth to come away with the 8-3 win. Riester earned the win, while senior Chris Fraser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) looked solid with 1 2/3 innings of relief./p>

Middlebury had its chances in game two, leaving 10 men on base, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trinity scored two in the second and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead early. Middlebury plated two in the fifth to cut the lead to one, but they could not muster up the tying run. Armstrong had two hits to lead the offense in game two./p>

MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM DEFEATS TRINITY

The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team defeated Trinity 11-10 on Saturday in a game that was a little tighter than the Panthers had hoped for. Middlebury is ranked fifth in the latest Division III National poll. /p>

The Panthers jumped out early and often, taking a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. Trinity came back in the second session with four goals in the final 8:49 of the quarter to make it an 8-4 game at the break. The Bantams outscored the Panthers 4-1 in the third quarter, opening the session with three straight goals to cut the lead to 8-7. Middlebury answered with a goal from senior Charley Howe (Darien, Conn.) at 4:37 before Trinity cut the advantage to 9-8 entering the fourth quarter. Trinity tied the game at the 11:49 mark, before taking their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 9:53 left to play. Senior Andrew Giordano (Washington, D.C.) tied the game for the Panthers with a nice feed from Howe at 8:21 of the fourth quarter. Howe then scored the game-winner for Middlebury with 5:31 left in regulation as the Panthers came away with an 11-10 win. Howe led the Panthers with three goals on the day, while sophomore Aaron Herter (Carlisle, Mass.) netted a pair. Senior Eric Krieger (Princeton, N.J.) made four saves in goal for Middlebury./p>
