The Panther women's golf team ended its abbreviated spring season with a win at the Lady Eph Spring Invitational hosted by Williams.
Leading Middlebury was first-year player Kerry Ortega (Clinton, N.Y.), who shot an 89 on the afternoon. Coming in with 90's were rookie Allison Ortega (Clinton, N.Y.) and classmate Heather Gallagher (Toronto, Ont.). The other scorers on the day were sophomore Sarah Hartman (Tulsa, Okla.) with a 96 and sophomore Lauren Young (Orinda, Calif.), who shot a 9
Women's golf ends season
The Middlebury College women's tennis team saw its season come to an end last week as they fell 6-3 to Amherst in an NCAA Regional Final hosted by the Jeffs. The Panthers advanced to the final after a 7-2 win over Bowdoin on the previous day. Middlebury ends the season with a school-record 16 wins, five more than the previous record of 11 held in each of the last three seasons.
The Panthers gained revenge against Bowdoin, after the Polar Bears had beaten Middlebury by the same score one week ago. First-year player Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.) earned a three-set (7-6 {7-5}, 4-6, 6-0) victory at #1, while senior Sandy Spring (Westport, N.Y.) was also a three-set (4-6, 6-1, 7-5) winner at #3. First-year player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) won 6-3, 6-2 at #2, fellow rookie Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas) was a 6-2, 6-2 victor at #4, while junior Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.) was a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 winner in the #5 slot. Senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) lost her singles match at #6, by scores of 6-2 and 6-4. In doubles action, Ross/Spring were 8-2 winners, as were Roche and senior Jena Sigel (Purchase, N.Y.), while Baker/Smyser fell, 8-6.
In the regional final, Middlebury won three of six singles matches, but were swept in doubles action, taking the 6-3 loss. Ross won 6-4, 6-3, Spring was a 6-3, 6-3 winner, while Ready's match was at 5-7, 7-5, before her opponent retired. At #2, Roche fell 6-4, 6-2, Smyser lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-5 at #4, while Baker was defeated 6-2, 6-4 at #6. In the doubles matches, Ross/Spring fell 8-5, Siegel/Roche were defeated by the same score, while Baker/Smyser lost 8-1.

The Middlebury College men's tennis team won its second straight NCAA Regional as they defeated NESCAC foe Trinity, 5-1. The Panthers advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 12-14th at Bates College. Middlebury also improves on its school record of 15 wins this season, against only three losses. Sophomore Brian Waldron's (Rye, N.Y.) 6-4, 6-4 win at #2 singles wrapped up the match, but other sets were played out due to a coach's agreement before the match.
The day began well as Middlebury won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Justin Ingoglia (N. Caldwell, N.J.) and rookie George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) won the tie-breaker at #1, 9-8 (11-9). Sophomore Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) and first-year player Alex Scott (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) were 8-6 winners at #2, while sophomores Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) and Waldron were 8-4 winners.
In singles action, Edmunds' match at #1 singles was a DNF. Waldron won at #2, while Beilin was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at #3. Mayer fell 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at #4, Ingoglia was 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in the #5 slot, while Scott was a 6-1, 6-4 winner in the sixth match.

The Middlebury College track and field teams were both in action last week at the New England Championships. The men's team placed 8th of 25 teams at Williams, while the women were 6th of 28 squads at Springfield.
Winning the decathlon event at the meet was Middlebury sophomore Kristoph Becker (Media, Pa.). Also earning N.E. Champion status was sophomore Kevin Bright (Sharon, Mass.) with a time of 53.05 in the 400 hurdles. Placing fifth in the 1500 race was junior Nick Digani(Northfield, Ill.) with a time of 4:00.24, while sophomore Steve Atkinson (Huntingdon, Que.) finished fifth with a toss of 182'8" in the javelin. Finishing third was the 4x100 relay team of juniors Liam Aiello (Middletown, Conn.), Phil Ford (Stamford, Conn.), Greg Lazerus (St. Louis, Mo.), along with senior Tony Garafano (Colchester, Vt.) with a time of 43.24.
Junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.) was crowned the New England Champion in the 800 with her time of 2:15.63. Placing second in the 400 hurdles was senior Maryanne Porter (W. Roxbury, Mass.) with a time of 1:03.36, followed by a third place finish from junior Sarah Berkowitz (Media, Pa.) in the pole vault (10'2"). Placing fifth in the high jump was senior Joanna Logue (Hingham, Mass.) with a 5'1" effort, while sophomore Whitney Creed (Farmington, Conn.) finished fifth in the hammer with a toss of 44.82 meters. Middlebury's other top finisher was rookie Christine Bolger (Edina, Minn.), who finished sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:01.15.

The SOFTBALL TEAM FALLS IN NESCAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
The amazing season for the women's softball team came to an end on Saturday as they fell 2-0 to Williams in the NESCAC Championship game. The team broke several records this year, including most wins in a season with 24. The seniors have come a long way after struggling though a 4-17 mark during their rookie season.
Prior to the NESCAC Tourney, Middlebury swept a pair of games from in-state rival Norwich. The Panthers took game one 8-5 before winning the second game 4-3 in eight innings. Senior Michaela George (Ross, Calif.), sophomore Lauren Battaglia (Framingham, Mass.) and first-year player Colleen Sullivan (Concord, Mass.) each had two hits apiece to lead the Panthers in the first game. Senior Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo.) drove in a pair, while sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.) scored three runs. Senior Lauren Bowe (Milton, Mass.) earned the win, allowing three earned runs.
In game two, Freyer doubled in Hurd with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Middlebury the win. George plated junior Lauren Guza (LaCanada, Calif.) earlier in the inning with a SAC fly for the game-tying run. Freyer had a pair of hits in the game to lead the offense, while first-year pitcher Jennifer Williams Scarborough, Maine) threw eight innings and struck out seven to earn the win.
Middlebury didn't get off to a great start at the NESCAC Tournament as they fell 2-0 to Bowdoin in the double-elimination tournament. An RBI double and single in the first inning scored the only two runs of the game for Bowdoin. Middlebury had three hits on the day, leaving six runners on base. George went 1-1 with a pair of walks, while Hurd had a hit and a stolen base. Junior Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.) took the loss.
The Panthers battled back the next day in the loser's bracket, defeating Tufts 2-0. A two-run double from first-year player Maura Casey (Garden City, N.Y.) was all Middlebury would need as she plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning. She ended the game with two hits, while Williams went 2-3 on the day. Bowe pitched five innings for the win, while Williams pitched the last two to earn a save.
Middlebury turned up the offense in their second game of the day as they scored three in the seventh to earn a 5-0 win over Bowdoin. A SAC fly by George gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The lead increased to 2-0 in the sixth with an RBI single by Sullivan, plating Freyer. A SAC fly by Williams, an RBI single by sophomore Victoria Glowacky (Blairstown, N.J.) and an unearned run gave the Panthers a comfortable 5-0 lead in the seventh. Guza went 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Freyer was 2-3 with a pair of runs scored. Battaglia also had two hits on the day, while Williams threw the complete game, allowing just five hits to earn the shutout.
In their third and final game of the day, Middlebury took on the host school, having to beat them twice to win the NESCAC title. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when a two-run double scored the game's only runs for Williams. The Panthers had three hits on the day and left five base runners. Freyer had a pair of hits, while McCarthy took the loss, allowing no earned runs over six innings.
Softball record: 24-8
The Panther women's lacrosse team won its fourth consecutive NESCAC Championship over Amherst, this time by a final score of 13-6 on Kohn Field. The Panthers receive an automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship and will host an NCAA Regional this weekend. Cortland State will host New England College on Wednesday, with the winner taking on Middlebury on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. William Smith will meet Wheaton in the other match-up at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The winners will meet on Sunday in the NCAA Regional final at 1:00 p.m.
In the semifinals against Bowdoin, the Polar Bears took a 1-0 lead at the 23:02 mark before the Panthers tied the game at 21:56 with a goal from first-year player Kim Walker (Ridgewood, N.J.). The Panthers were finally able get on the board, as they netted three goals in a 42-second span to take a 4-1 lead with 9:58 left to play in the first half. Rookie Claire Edelen (Sparks, Md.) assisted on the first goal, before scoring the next two off the face-offs. Bowdoin scored a pair of goals in 1:04, cutting the lead to 4-3 at the 7:40 mark. Walker's second goal of the game with 1:01 left, gave Middlebury a 5-3 halftime lead.
Middlebury slowly increased the lead in the second half, with four different goal scorers tallying to give the Panthers a 9-3 lead with 13:30 remaining. Bowdoin answered with a pair in 45 seconds to make it a 9-5 game with 7:21 left to play. The Polar Bears scored twice more to make it a two-goal game with 1:36 remaining. The Polar Bears had a few shots to come within one late in the game, but the Middlebury defense held for the 9-7 win. Sophomore Michele Bergofsky (Exeter, N.H.), Edelenand Walker led the Panthers with two goals apiece on the day. Senior Sarah Grenert (Sewickley, Pa.) made seven saves for Middlebury.
In the title game, Amherst took a 1-0 lead at 24:57 with a free position goal. The Jeffs scored twice more to increase their lead to 3-0, but that would be Amherst's last goal for the next 33:44 of play, as Middlebury ran off a dozen goals to take a 12-3 lead with 16:05 left in the second half. Trailing 3-0, Walker scored at the 17:55 mark with a shot that trickled into the net off the leg of Amherst the goalkeeper. Senior Nuala O'Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) made it a one-goal game 37 seconds later with a bounce shot, while sophomore Emily Erickson (Yarmouth, Maine) tied the contest just 15 seconds later. Edelen ended the four-goal 1:29 run, with a bouncing shot at the 16:26 mark of the first half. The Panthers would score four more goals in the half to take an 8-3 lead into the halftime break.
A goal from sophomore Schuyler Winstead (Chevy Chase, Md.) and a pair from O'Donohoe increased the lead to 11-3 with 16:30 remaining. Bergofsky scored just 25 seconds later before Amherst broke its scoreless draught with a tally at the 14:43 mark. The Jeffs struck again to cut the lead to 12-5 before the teams exchanged the game's final two goals. O'Donohoe and Winstead paced the Panthers with three goals apiece, while Grenert was solid for Middlebury, making 11 saves on the afternoon. For her two-game performance, Grenert was named the NESCAC Player of the Week.

The Panther baseball team saw its post-season hopes come to an end last week as they lost a three-game set with Amherst, with a NESCAC Tournament bid on the line.
The week began with an 11-5 loss to St. Michael's on Forbes Field. The Purple Knights took a 5-1 lead after the second inning and never looked back on their way to the win. Junior David Riester (Appleton, Wis.) was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored, while junior Dev Talvadkar (Washington, D.C.) went 2-4 with a double.
Middlebury gave up six unearned runs as they dropped game one of a three-game series with Amherst at Forbes Field, 9-2. Amherst struck first with a run in the fifth before Middlebury answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Senior Jake Armstrong (LaJolla, Calif.) had an RBI single, while sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) plated sophomore Dom DiDomenico (Oceanside, N.Y.) with a SAC fly. Amherst regained the lead with a pair in the sixth, before scoring six runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Andrew Pavoni (Scotch Plains, N.J.) had a pair of hits to lead the Middlebury offense on the afternoon.
On Saturday, Amherst scored on a double-steal from first and third in the second inning, which would be the only run they needed in a tightly-contested 1-0 game. Senior Chris Fraser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) threw six innings for Middlebury, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Three different players had hits for the Panthers, including a double from Talvadkar.
In the second game, senior hurler Ben Christensen (Kalispell, Mont. threw a nine inning complete game to earn the win on the hill for Middlebury. The Panthers broke open a 4-3 game with six runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-4 lead. Riester went 3-5 with a double, triple, and two RBI, while senior Jim Muhlfeld (Darien, Conn.) had three hits, including a double.
In the season finales at Bowdoin, the host school jumped out to an 11-1 lead in game one, but Middlebury came back to score 11 runs in innings four through six to get back in the game. The Polar Bears plated runs in those innings as well and came away with the win. R. Armstrong went 3-5 with three RBI, while junior Bryan Lodigiani (Pennington, N.J.) was 3-4 with three runs scored. Senior Abe Streep (S. Nyack, N.Y.) was also in on the offense, going 2-4 with two runs and three RBI.
In game two, Bowdoin took a 6-5 lead after the first inning of play. Middlebury scored four runs in the seventh, sparked by a two-run double by Pavoni to take a 12-11 lead. The Polar Bears tied the game in the seventh before scoring the game-winner in the eighth after a batter was hit by a pitch. Pavoni went 2-5 with two runs scored and three RBI in the game, while Riester was 3-5 with two runs scored.
Baseball team's final record: 12-17
The Middlebury College men's lacrosse team won two more games last week to improve to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers are the top seed for this weekend's NESCAC Tournament and will take on Amherst on Saturday at noon on Youngman Field. Tufts will meet Wesleyan in the other match-up at 3:00 p.m., with the winners meeting in the NESCAC Final on Sunday at noon.
Last week, Middlebury held Williams scoreless for a 33:58 span on its way to their 11th straight win over the Ephs, this time by a score of 12-5. Williams took the lead early, giving them a 2-0 lead with 8:15 left in the first quarter. Senior Andrew Giordano (Washington, D.C.) put the Panthers on the board late in the quarter, cutting the margin in half at the end of one. Middlebury then outscored Williams 5-0 in the second quarter, and ran off nine straight goals overall to take a 10-2 lead with 9:42 left to play in the third quarter. Sophomore Travis Meyer Potomac, Md.) and senior Greg Bastis (Old Greenwich, Conn.) each had a pair of goals during the decisive run. The Ephs scored twice in the final five minutes of the third quarter to make it a 10-4 game. Middlebury answered with a pair in the fourth before Williams scored the game's final goal to make it a 12-5 contest. Giordano, Meyer and senior Mike Saraceni (N. Syracuse, N.Y.) each had a pair of goals to lead the Middlebury offense. Senior Eric Krieger (Princeton, N.J.) made nine saves in goal for Middlebury.
Middlebury outscored Bates 5-1 in the fourth quarter to put the game away and come out with a 14-6 win in Maine. Bastis led the team with three goals, while Meyer and junior Mark Foster (Denver, Colo.) had two goals apiece. Krieger played well again, stopping 13 shots on the day
