MEN'S SOCCER OPENS WITH A WIN The Middlebury College men's soccer team avenged last season's 3-2 overtime loss on the road with a 4-0 win over Western New England College in the season-opener for the Panthers in Middlebury.
Junior Kellan Florio (Gilford, N.H.) opened the scoring as he took a through pass from junior Matt Haddad (Longmeadow, Mass.) and found the net at the 11:09 mark. Rookie John Sales (Chatham, Ill.) scored the first of his career as he headed in a nice serving pass from sophomore Derek Cece (Williamstown, Mass.) late in the first half. Florio netted his second of the game at 54:41 with a shot inside the box, while senior Matt Scheufele (Plymouth, Mass.) ended the scoring at 83:08, putting home a loose ball in the crease area. FIELD HOCKEY TEAM TOPS SKIDMORE
The Panther field hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for the 3-2 win over Skidmore in the Panther's season-opener at Kohn Field.
Senior Missy Krempa (Johnstown, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the first half as she found the back of the cage down low. Leading 1-0, sophomore Ashley Lyddane (Greenwich, Conn.) tipped in a shot from sophomore Allison Smith (Darien, Conn.) to make it a 2-0 game just 4:08 into the second half. A little under five minutes later, senior Keely Murphy (St. Louis, Mo.) made it a 3-0 game with a rocket from the outside. Skidmore got on the board with 19:36 remaining and made it a one-goal game at 4:58, but that's as close as they would come as Middlebury held on for the win. Sophomore Anna Spiegel (McLean, Va.) made nine saves in goal for Middlebury.
