WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN SEASON OPENER

The Panther women's soccer team opened its season with a heartbreaking loss at Trinity in a NESCAC contest. With the game scoreless, the Bantams were able to muster up a goal with just eight seconds left in the contest to take the 1-0 win on their home field. Junior Els Van Woert (Shelburne, Vt.) was solid in net, making nine saves on the afternoon..

MEN’S TENNIS DOMINATES MIDDLEBURY INVITATIONAL  

The Middlebury College men's team opened its fall season by hosting the 11th Annual Middlebury Invitational Tournament. The seven-team tournament features some of the regions top teams, including Bates, Bowdoin and Rochester. The Panthers were dominant, winning five of six brackets, while also boasting 12 of 16 players involved in finals matches.

In the "A" singles final, sophomore Brian Waldron (Rye, N.Y.) looked impressive as he picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win over sophomore Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.). Rookie George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) picked up a win in the "B" singles flight as he topped fellow rookie Kevin Bergesen (Beverly, Mass.), 6-4, 6-1. In "C" singles, junior Alex Meditz (Arlington, Va.) picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win, while senior Mike Gillim (Chatham, N.J.) fell 6-1, 6-3 in the finals of the "D" flight.

In doubles action, Mayer and junior Andrew Jacobi (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) were victorious in the "B" flight by a score of 8-1. The"A" doubles final featuring Ingoglia and senior Stuart Brown (Pt. Claire, Que.) against Edmunds and Waldron, did not finish due to weather. The match will be completed this week.

FIELD HOCKEY TEAM IMPROVES TO 2-0

The Middlebury College field hockey team won its second game in as many weeks as they topped Trinity 4-2 on the road for a NESCAC win.

Trailing 1-0, senior Char Glessner (Ipswich, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Panthers. Sophomore Ashley Lyddane (Greenwich, Conn.) gave Middlebury a 2-1 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. Just 36 seconds into the second half, Glessner struck again to make it a 3-1 contest. Just 1:50 later, junior Ashley Pullen (Oakland, Maine) gave Middlebury a 4-1 lead before Trinity scored the game's final goal to make it a 4-2 win. Sophomore Anna Spiegel (McLean, Va.) made three saves in goal for Middlebury.

MEN’S SOCCER HAS NOT BEEN SCORED UPON

The Panther men's soccer team improved to 3-0 last week, outscoring its opponents 13-0 on the season.

The week began with a 6-0 shutout of Castleton State. Six different goal scorers tallied for the Panthers, as they outshot the Spartans, 41-1. Junior Kellan Florio (Gilford, N.H.) opened the scoring at the 15-minute mark with a low crossing shot. First-year player John Sales (Chatham, Ill.) made it 2-0 with a blast from 20 yards out. Senior Andrew Stewart (Weston, Conn.) converted a nice dish from Sales to make it 3-0 at the 25-minute mark. Rookie David Lee (Mendham, N.J.) scored the first of his career after a scramble to give Middlebury a 4-0 lead at the half. Junior Leland Bourdon (Ft. Collins, Colo.) and senior Andrew Helming (Sharon, Conn.) each netted their first career tallies in the second session to make it a 6-0 final. Junior David Lindholm (Cornwall, Vt.) was forced to make no saves as he earned the shutout.

Middlebury opened NESCAC play with a 3-0 win on the road at Trinity. Florio scored a pair of goals in the game, both with assists from Stewart. Senior Sam Raymond (Ipswich, Mass.) scored the game's third goal with a feed from Sales. Junior Craig Hirsh (Verona, N.J.) made five saves in goal. For his impressive week, Florio was named the NESCAC Player of the Week.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL OPENS SEASON AT 1-1

The Middlebury College women's volleyball team hosted St. Michael's and Green Mountain at the Pepin Gym on Saturday. The Panthers came away with a 3-0 win over Green Mountain, while falling to St. Michael's, 3-1.

All Panthers saw action against Green Mountain as they overpowered their opponents. Senior Danielle Boniello (Golden's Bridge, N.Y.) had six kills in the match, while junior Katy Hicks (Santa Barbara, Calif.) added four.

Four players were in double figures in kills against St. Michael's, but it wasn't enough as Middlebury dropped its first match of the season. Hicks led the group with a dozen, followed by junior Sydney Hartsock (Snohomish, Wash.) with 11, Boniello with 10 and senior Luz Brito (New York, N.Y.), also with 10. Sophomore Jamie Wong (San Francisco, Calif.) was big defensively with 28 digs in the match.

MEN'S GOLF TEAM FIFTH AT DUKE NELSON

The Panther men's golf team placed fifth overall at the 20th annual Duke Nelson Golf Tournament at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course. Clarkson won the event (618), followed by Williams (619), Hamilton (619) and Vermont (621).

Middlebury shot 627 over the two days, leaving them nine shots off the pace. Panther rookie Jay Yonamine (Eden Prairie, Minn.) paced the team with a 151, placing him in a fourth place tie. First-year player Mitch St. Peter (San Francisco, Calif.) was next with a 155, followed by senior Chuck Clement (Rochester, N.H.) with a 157, junior Derek Singer (Niskayuna, N.Y.), who shot a 164 and junior Tim Quinn (Greenwich, Conn.), who came in with a 172.

WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM OPENS SEASON WITH A WIN

The Middlebury College women's golf team, in its first season of official varsity status, picked up a convincing win at the Williams Fall Tournament. The Panthers shot 324 on the day, followed by Cortland, Williams and Elmira.

Middlebury dominated the field, placing four of its five golfers in the top four overall. First-year player Heather Gallagher (Toronto, Ont.) turned in an impressive finish as she captured individual honors with a 75, 10 strokes ahead of her nearest competitor. Placing second was senior Emily Lord (Weston, Mass.) with an 85, followed by twins Kerry and Allison Ortega (Clinton, N.Y.), who both shot 87's, tying them for third place. Rounding out the Middlebury squad was sophomore Sarah Hartman (Tulsa, Okla.), with a 97.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HOST INVITATIONAL

The Panther cross country teams opened their seasons by hosting the Middlebury Invitational meets on campus. The women's team won their eight-team race, while the men placed second in their seven-team meet.

The women's team dominated the race, placing six of the top nine racers. Leading the Middlebury women was rookie Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine), who placed second overall in 19:22. Junior Marisa Cawley (Bennington, N.H.) placed third overall in 19:26, followed by sophomore Kelsey Rinehart (Moorestown, N.J.) in sixth (20:14), senior Margery Glover (Lancaster, Pa.) in seventh (20:14) and sophomore Jennifer Jorvig (Minnetonka, Minn.) in eighth (20:15). Rounding out the Middlebury scorers were first-year racers Erin Archard (Vienna, Maine) in ninth (20:21) and Stephanie Nugent (Cambridge, Mass.) in 11th (20:29).

The men's team was led by junior Jonathan Erwin (Rumson, N.J.), who placed third overall with a time of 27:48. Other top finishers for the men include senior Marshall Greene (Spokane, Wash.) in sixth (28:17), junior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) in ninth (28:45), senior Jakub Benes (Oakland, Calif.) in 11th (29:05) and senior Chris Eberly (Swarthmore, Pa.) in 12th (29:08).
