FOOTBALL KNOCKS OFF AMHERST
The Middlebury College football team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday as they topped Amherst 17-14 on the road. Junior Mike Keenan (Rutland, Vt.) found junior Mike Murray (Larchmont, N.Y.) for a five-yard scoring strike with 1:12 left to play to lift Middlebury to the victory over previously unbeaten Amherst. Keenan connected on six of seven passes for 51 yards on the game-winning, 13-play, 86-yard drive. Junior Eric Shanley (Plymouth, Mass.) chipped in with 21 rushing yards in the series. Amherst took a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter with a short touchdown run. Middlebury tied the game late in the second quarter when Murray blocked and recovered a punt before he scampered 36 yards for the touchdown. A 27-yard field goal from junior Andy Bohlin (Waterville Valley,
N.H.) gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Jeffs came back to take a 14-10 lead on a short rush with 54 seconds left in the third quarter. Keenan completed 18 of 28 passes on the day for 197 yards, including a touchdown. Shanley carried the ball 25 times for 81 yards, while junior Ryan Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) led the team in receptions with six for 39 yards. Senior Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) caught five passes for 95 yards, while Murray had two, including the game-winning touchdown catch along with the blocked punt. Rookie Scott Secor (Lake Odessa, Mich.) led the defense with 17 tackles and an interception, while senior Craig Pittman (Atlanta,
Ga.) had 11 tackles and an interception to end Amherst's final drive with 1:01 remaining.

WOMEN'S TENNIS TOPS WILLIAMS
The Panther women's tennis team topped Williams for the first time since '87 with a 6-3 win at the Proctor Courts last Thursday. Middlebury won three singles and all three doubles matches on their way to victory.
First-year players Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas), along with senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) all won their singles matches. Roche won 6-4, 6-4, Smyser was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 winner, while Baker won a marathon 6-7, 7-6, 10-5.
In doubles action, first-year player Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.) and junior Sandy Spring (Westport, Conn.) picked up an 8-5 win, while Roche and senior Jena Siegel (Purchase, N.Y.) were 8-4 winners. The third doubles match saw Baker and Smyser pick up an 8-4 win.

FIELD HOCKEY TEAM STILL UNBEATEN
The Middlebury College field hockey team is off to its best start in school history after two more wins last week. The Panthers picked up a 4-0 win at home vs. Keene State before topping Amherst 3-2 on the road. Middlebury scored three first half goals to pick up a 4-0 win over Keene State.
Sophomore Channing Weymouth (Plymouth, N.H.) opened the scoring just 3:10 into the game as she took a nice feed from senior Missy Krempa (Johnstown, N.Y.) after a penalty corner and converted. Krempa scored a goal of her own at 21:35 as she blasted home a shot from the outside. Sophomore Ashley Lyddane (Greenwich, Conn.) made it a 3-0 game as she snapped a shot high into the cage with 3:05 left in the first half. Weymouth scored her second of the game, and the second half's only goal with 4:25 remaining. First-year player Meg McGillen (Harwich, Mass.) made five saves in goal for the shutout.
At Amherst, sophomore Allison Smith (Darien, Conn.) gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead before Amherst scored twice in the final minute of the first half to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Smith tied the game early in the second half before senior Char Glessner (Ipswich, Mass.) scored the game-winner with 11:42 left to play. McGillen made eight saves in goal.

p align="center">MEN'S SOCCER EARNS TIE WITH AMHERST In its only game of the week, the Panther men's soccer team battled to a scoreless tie over 110 minutes of action at Amherst. Junior Craig Hirsh (Verona, N.J.) was big in goal, posting a career-best 12 saves to earn Middlebury the tie on the road. His counterpart made 14 saves on the day to keep the Panthers off the board.

p> MEN'S TENNIS COMPETES AT BATES TOURNEY
The Middlebury College men's tennis team took part in the Wallach Tennis Invitational hosted by Bates over the weekend.
In "A" singles, sophomore Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) buzzed through his opponents with four wins en route to a 6-3, 6-4 win in the finals. He didn't lose a set on the weekend, losing only 13 of 61 games. Junior Andrew Jacobi (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) was also victorious by winning the "B" singles flight with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win. Senior Stuart Brown (Pt. Claire, Que.) advanced to the semifinals of that bracket before falling 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles action, Beilin and junior Mike DiRaimondo (Huntington,
N.Y.) played some close matches, but were able to survive by winning the "A" doubles bracket, 9-7.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO WILLIAMS
The Panther women's volleyball team dropped its only match of the week as they fell 3-0 (30-19, 30-16, 30-22) at Williams. Senior Danielle Boniello (Golden's Bridge, N.Y.) had eight kills in the match, while sophomore Jamie Wong (San Francisco, Calif.) paced the team with 19 digs.

WOMEN'S SOCCER GOES 1-1
The Middlebury College women's soccer team saw its six game winning streak come to an end last week as they fell 2-0 at Amherst. Earlier in the week, the Panthers cruised to a 7-0 win over Colby-Sawyer.
Senior Jessica Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) scored twice to lead Middlebury to the shutout victory over Colby-Sawyer. First-year player Caity Abshere (Madison, Wis.) dished out three assists in the game, while first-year player Erin Pittenger (McCall, Idaho) had a goal and an assist. First-year player Al Shube (Marblehead, Mass.) made four saves in goal for the shutout.
At Amherst, the Jeffs scored two second half goals to earn a 2-0 win over the Panthers. The game was evenly played, but Middlebury could not find the back of the net. Junior Els Van Woert (Shelburne, Vt.) made three saves in goal.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS DOMINATE STATE MEET
p align="left">The Panther cross country teams cruised to victories in this year's State Championship meet hosted by Lyndon State. The women placed the top 10 and 15 of the top 16, while the men placed four of the top five racers.
Winning the race for the women was first-year racer Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine) with a time of 20:12. Four seconds behind was fellow rookie Stephanie Nugent (Cambridge, Mass.), followed by senior Molly Yazwinski (Deerfield, Mass.) in third place with a time of 20:18. First-year runner Erin Archard (Vienna, Maine) placed fourth in 20:27, sophomore Claire Anderson (Whitefish, Mont.) came in fifth in 20:55, followed by sophomore Jennifer Jorvig (Minnetonka, Minn.) in sixth with a time of 20:57 and first-year runner Makely Lyon (Portland, Ore.) in seventh in 21:27.
On the men's side, sophomore Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) came in second with a time of 28:39, 33 seconds off the winning pace. Placing second in the race was junior Jonathan Erwin (Rumson, N.J.) in 28:55, followed by junior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) in third with a time of 29:20 and senior Marshall Greene (Spokane, Wash.) in fourth in 29:25.

WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM FIFTH AT WELLESLEY
The Middlebury College women's golf team placed fifth overall out of seven teams at the Wellesley Golf Invitational. All five Panthers placed in the middle of the pack in the two-day tournament at the Nehoiden Golf Course in Massachusetts.
First-year player Heather Gallagher (Toronto, Ont.) led the Middlebury players with a two-day total of 180, placing her 11th. Tying for 13th place with a 187 was sophomore Sarah Hartman (Tulsa, Okla.), followed by senior Emily Lord (Weston, Mass.) and first-year player Kerry Ortega (Clinton, N.Y.), who both shot 188 to finish in the 15th place tie. First-year player Allison Ortega (Clinton, N.Y.) rounded out the Middlebury golfers in 20th place with a 194.
