a name="wsoccer">WOMEN’S SOCCER TOPS WILLIAMS p align="justify">The Middlebury College women's soccer team won its only game of the week as they picked up a big NESCAC win over Williams. Junior Mayo Fujii (Londonderry, Vt.) scored the game-winner at the 68:42 mark as the Panthers came from 1-0 down to pick up a 2-1 win over Williams. First-year player Erin Pittenger (McCall, Idaho) settled a ball in the area after a crossing pass and found Fujii for the goal. Williams had taken a 1-0 lead early before Middlebury tied the game late in the first half as junior Brittany Cronnin (Aurora, Colo.) beat her defender down the middle before ripping a shot into the net. Junior Els Van Woert (Shelburne, Vt.) made four saves in goal for Middlebury.- Women’s soccer record: 7-2

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS RACE AT N.E.'S
The Middlebury College cross country teams took part in the open division New England Championships last week. The women's team finished in a second place tie with Trinity, second only to Division I Brown. The men's squad placed 24th overall.
Pacing the women was junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.), who placed sixth in 18:06, 22 seconds off the winning pace. Coming in 27th in her collegiate debut was sophomore Amber Trotter (Redwood Valley, Calif.), with a time of 18:33. Placing 28th with the same time was first-year racer Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine), followed by senior Molly Yazwinski (Deerfield, Mass.) in 32nd (18:36) and rookie Stephanie Nugent (Cambridge, Mass.) in 41st (18:44).
Sophomore Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the men in 88th place in 26:11, followed by junior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) in 116th (26:28) and junior Jonathan Erwin (Rumson, N.J.) in 139th (26:41)

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PLAYS FOUR MATCHES
The Panther women's volleyball team topped Skidmore early last week before dropping two of three matches at a NESCAC Quad hosted by Bates.
At Skidmore, the Panthers played four tight sets, and came away with a 3-1 (30-27, 17-30, 34-32, 30-28) win. Junior Katy Hicks (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and senior Danielle Boniello (Golden's Bridge, N.Y.) each had 13 kills in the match, while junior Sydney Hartsock (Snohomish, Wash.) had 11. Sophomore Jamie Wong (San Francisco, Calif.) was big on defense with 33 digs, while senior Luz Brito (New York, N.Y.) had 23 and Hartsock added 22. Junior Laurie Wollin (Colleyville, Texas) dished out 43 assists in the match.
Middlebury moved to over .500 on the season with a 3-0 win over Bowdoin in their first match of the weekend. Boniello had 11 kills in the match, while Wong had 25 kills. The next day, the Panthers were handed 3-0 losses by Bates and Colby. Hartsock and Hicks had 10 kills apiece over the two losses, while Wong had 27 digs.

WOMEN’S TENNIS TOPS WILLIAMS
The Panther women's tennis team won its only match of the week as they rolled to an 8-1 win over Colby.
First-year players Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), and Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas), juniors Sandy Spring (Westport, Conn.) and Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.), along with senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) were all straight set singles winners.
In doubles action, Spring and first-year player Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.), Roche and senior Jena Siegel (Purchase, N.Y.), as well as Smyser and Baker were all victorious.

FOOTBALL TEAM FALLS TO WILLIAMS
The Middlebury College football team dropped its third game of the season by a score of 35-25 to Williams on Saturday. The two teams combined for 855 yards of offense on the day.
Williams jumped out to a 14-0 lead with touchdowns on each of their first two possessions. Middlebury cut the lead in half early in the second quarter as junior Mike Keenan (Rutland, Vt.) connected with senior Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) for a 33-yard scoring strike. The Ephs answered late in the half with a 64-yard drive capped off by a one-yard scamper. Leading 21-7 at the break, Williams tacked on another touchdown on its first possession of the second half to give them a 28-7 lead. Following the score, an interception by first-year player Scott Secor (Lake Odessa, Mich.) gave Middlebury the ball on their own 48. Five plays later, Keenan found Cleaver again, this time for a 14-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 28-13 after a missed extra point. Following a defensive hold, Middlebury capped off a 14-play, 83-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run from senior Matt Wolf (Weston, Mass.). The extra point failed again, leaving the score at 28-19. Williams scored the backbreaker with 4:56 left in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass, following an interception. The score gave the Ephs a 35-19 lead late. Middlebury hung tough with another score as junior Eric Shanley (Plymouth, Mass.) found the end zone on a five-yard run to make it a 35-25 final.
Keenan completed 18 of 35 passes for 266 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Cleaver had a huge day with a career-high nine catches for 168 yards with two touchdowns. Shanley led the rushers with 66 yards on 16 carries, while junior Richard Decembrele (Walpole, Mass.) had 11 tackles on the day.

MEN'S SOCCER DROPS FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON
The Panther men's soccer team played only one game last week, coming up on the short end of a 2-0 game with Williams. Williams took a 1-0 lead just 4:26 into the game with a nice crossing pass and goal. Middlebury thought they had tied the game on a header from junior J.B. Gerber (Davis, Calif.) at 11:11, but the goal was waved off due to a foul. The Panthers continued to keep up the pressure but could not find the equalizer in the first half.
Middlebury continued to come at Williams with some great scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not solve the Eph netminder. The Ephs gained some breathing room at the 65:34 mark with a header goal. A few late efforts were dodged by Williams as the Panthers outshot the Ephs 28-9, but came up short, 2-0. Junior Craig Hirsh (Verona, N.J.) made four saves in goal.

WOMEN'S GOLF PLACES SECOND AT WILLIAMS/p>
The Panther women's golf team placed second among six teams at the Williams Columbus Day Tournament on Sunday.
First-year player Kerry Ortega (Clinton, N.Y.) led the Panthers as she fired an 83, six shots off the winning pace. Placing sixth overall was first-year player Heather Gallagher (Toronto, Ont.) with an 87, followed by sophomore Sarah Hartman (Tulsa, Okla.) and first-year player Allison Ortega (Clinton, N.Y.) each with 90's in seventh place. Senior Emily Lord (Weston, Mass.) rounded out the group in a tie for ninth place with a 91.

FIELD HOCKEY TEAM RANKED SECOND NATIONALLY/p>
The Middlebury College field hockey team continued to improve on their perfect season last week with two more wins. The Panthers now have a strong hold of first place in the NESCAC standings as well as a 10-0 record.
Middlebury had little trouble at Union in a mid-week non-league game, topping the Dutchwomen, 8-1. Sophomores Ashley Lyddane (Greenwich, Conn.) and Allison Smith (Darien, Conn.) each scored two goals in the game, while Smith added three assists. Seniors Missy Krempa (Johnstown, N.Y.) and Abigail Lamb (Mendham, N.J.) each had a goal and an assist in the game, while Lyddane added an assist. First-year player Meg McGillen (Harwich, Mass.) and sophomore Anna Spiegel (McLean, Va.) combined to make two saves in goal.
Following a scoreless first half against Williams, Krempa was able to score the game's only goal as she converted a pass from Lamb with 14:53 left to go in the contest. Middlebury's stellar defense would remain steady, giving the Panthers their third shutout win of the season. McGillen made a pair of saves in goal for Middlebury.
