WOMEN'S TENNIS FOURTH AT NEW ENGLAND'S The Panther women's tennis team took part in the NEWITT Tournament hosted by Amherst last weekend, placing fourth of 24 teams at the event.
In the #4 singles bracket, first-year player Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas) advanced to the finals, before falling 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. Junior Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.) advanced to the semi's of the #5 bracket before falling 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, while first-year player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) did the same in the #2 bracket, falling 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles action, Roche and senior Jena Siegel (Purchase, N.Y.) were impressive as they won the second flight by a score of 8-3 in the finals. In the #3 bracket, Smyser and senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) fell in the championship match by a score of 9-8 (3).
Earlier in the week, the Panthers had no trouble with Bates as they picked up a 9-0 win.

WOMEN'S SOCCER HAS A 1-1 WEEK The Panther women's soccer team pounded Lyndon State 8-0 before falling 1-0 at Bates over the weekend.
First-year player Laura Kwoh (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Middlebury to the win. Fellow rookie Amanda Vrecenak (Chester Springs, Pa.) had a goal and two assists in the win, while rookie netminder Al Shube (Marblehead, Mass.) got the win in goal.
Bates scored on a header just over 12 minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead over Middlebury. That would be the game's only goal as the Bobcats held on for the 1-0 win.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS RACE AT ALBANY INVITATIONAL The Middlebury College cross country teams took part in the 37th annual Albany Invitational meet last weekend. The women won the meet, while the men placed seventh.
Junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.) was the top finisher for the women, placing third overall with a time of 18:05, second to a pair of Division I racers. First-year racer Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine) placed fifth in the race in 18:16, followed by fellow rookie Erin Archard (Vienna, Maine) who finished ninth in 18:19. The Panthers then placed a pack of runners in 12th, 13th and 14th place in the race. Senior Molly Yazwinski (Deerfield, Mass.) (18:21), first-year runner Stephanie Nugent (Cambridge, Mass.) (18:21) and junior Marisa Cawley (Bennington, N.H.) (18:25) comprised the threesome. Sophomore Amber Trotter (Redwood Valley, Calif.) was the other Middlebury racer in 20th place with a time of 18:40
On the men's side, junior Jonathan Erwin (Rumson, N.J.) was Middlebury's top racer in 26th place with a time of 26:19, 1:21 off the winning pace. Placing 35th in the race was sophomore Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) with a time of 26:32, followed by senior Marshall Greene (Spokane, Wash.) in 45th place (26:42.) Junior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) rounded out the top male performers in 54th place with a time of 26:54.

FIELD HOCKEY CONTINUES TO ROLL The Panther field hockey team improved their record to 11-0 with a 4-3 win at Bates. Middlebury has now clinched first place in the NESCAC and will host the semifinals and championship on November 8th and 9th on Kohn Field.
In a game that wasn't as close as the score, Bates scored three times in the final 5:44 to break up the shutout. Sophomores Ashley Lyddane (Greenwich, Conn.) and Allison Smith (Darien, Conn.) scored Middlebury's first two goals, while senior Abigail Lamb (Mendham, N.J.) and first-year player Emily Read (Pepper Pike, Ohio) added two more tallies in the win.
Lyddane also dished out two assists in the win, while first-year player Meg McGillen (Harwich, Mass.) and sophomore Anna Spiegel (McLean, Va.) combined for the win in goal.

FOOTBALL TEAM TOPS BATES The Middlebury College football team got back on the winning track last week as they picked up a 21-13 road win at Bates. Junior quarterback Mike Keenan (Rutland, Vt.) threw for 256 yards with three touchdown passes as Middlebury improved to 2-3 on the season.
Bates scored on its opening drive of the game as a 14-yard rush gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, the Bobcats increased their lead with a 22-yard field goal to make it a 10-0 game. The teams exchanged four punts before Middlebury got on the board with 6:54 left in the half as Keenan found senior Charley Howe (Darien, Conn.) for a two-yard touchdown pass. Bates was driving late in the half, but an interception by junior Cam Brooks (Delray Beach, Fla.) stymied the drive at the Middlebury 30.
On their first drive of the second half, the Panthers put together a quick five play, 66-yard drive following a short kickoff. Three pass completions over more than 15 yards moved Middlebury down the field quickly as junior Mike Murray (Larchmont, N.Y.) caught a 28-yarder for the touchdown. Middlebury held the 14-10 lead until Bates kicked a field goal on its next possession to cut the lead to 14-13 with 7:45 left in the third quarter. On their next possession, Middlebury scored on another 66-yard drive as Keenan found senior Matt Wolf (Weston, Mass.) three times on the drive for 36 yards, including a seven-yard scoring strike. The lead grew to 21-13, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the game.
Keenan ended the day 17 of 33, while junior Eric Shanley (Plymouth, Mass.) rushed 17 times for 76 yards. Senior Tom Cleaver (Severna Park, Md.) had another big day with five catches for 99 yards, while Brooks had two interceptions on the day. Junior Phil Reiff (Hinsdale, Ill.) (11 tackles) and junior Richard Decembrele (Walpole, Mass.) (10 tackles), led the defense.

MEN'S SOCCER SPLITS A PAIR OF GAMES The Middlebury College men's soccer team won one of two road games last week. They defeated in-state rival Norwich 5-0 before falling 2-0 at Bates. At Norwich, senior Kellan Florio (Gilford, N.H.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Panthers to the win. Seniors Pat Saunders (Morristown, N.J.) and Andrew Helming (Sharon, Conn.) along with sophomore Derek Cece (Williamstown, Mass.) each scored goals in the win. Junior David Lindholm (Cornwall, Vt.) earned the shutout with a pair of saves.
Bates scored a goal with 5:10 left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead over Middlebury. The game remained at 1-0 until the Bobcats tacked on a goal in the final 10 minutes to pick up the 2-0 win. Junior Craig Hirsh (Verona, N.J.) made two saves in goal.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ENJOYS 2-1 WEEK The Middlebury College women's volleyball team evened their record to .500 with a pair of wins last week. The Panthers topped Colby Sawyer 3-2 (30-27, 21-30, 32-30, 20-30, 15-11) before falling to Williams 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-20) and beating Hamilton 3-0 (30-17, 33-31, 30-27).
Junior Katy Hicks (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was big in the match against Colby-Sawyer as she put away 18 kills in the match. First-year player Lacee Patterson (Aspen, Colo.) added 13 kills in the match, while sophomore Jamie Wong (San Francisco, Calif.) had 21 digs and junior Laurie Wollin (Colleyville, Texas) earned 41 assists.
Middlebury hung tough with 22-2 Williams, but the Panthers came up on the short end of three tight sets. Patterson led the team with eight kills, while Hicks and senior Danielle Boniello (Golden's Bridge, N.Y.) added seven apiece. Wong was the defensive leader with 22 kills, while Patterson added 18.
The Panthers were back on the winning track with their second match of the day in Pepin Gym as they defeated Hamilton. Hicks had 13 kills in the win, while Wollin had 11 digs and 19 assists.
