MEN'S SOCCER PICKS UP A PAIR OF WINS A PAIR

The Middlebury College men's soccer team won two road games last week to improve to 9-2-2 on the season. The Panthers topped St. Michael's 2-0 before
earning a 2-1 win at Tufts.

Junior John Rusten (Federal Way, Wash.) scored on a penalty kick 20 minutes into the game to give Middlebury a 1-0 lead at St. Michael's. A crossing pass from first-year player Winston Rains (Grapevine, Texas) to junior J.B. Gerber (Davis, Calif.) set up Middlebury's second goal in the final minute of the first half. The would be the final tally of the game as rookie Zach Toth (Carlisle, Mass.) made three saves in goal to preserve the shutout. At Tufts, Rusten again opened the scoring, this time in the first minute of the contest. First-year player John Sales (Chatham, Ill.) gave Middlebury
some breathing room in the 59th minute with his fifth goal of the season. Tufts broke up the shutout with just six seconds left in the contest. Junior Craig Hirsh (Verona, N.J.) made three saves in goal.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SPLITS TWO NON-LEAGUE MATCHES

The Middlebury College women's volleyball team picked up a win and a loss last week with two non-league road matches. The Panthers defeated Plattsburgh 3-1 before falling at Plymouth State, 3-2.

Against Plattsburgh, junior Katy Hicks (Santa Barbara, Calif.) pounded out 18 kills, while first-year player Lacee Patterson (Aspen, Colo.) added a dozen as the Panthers picked up a win. Patterson also was big on defense with 20 digs, while sophomore Jamie Wong (San Francisco, Calif.) added 16.

The Plymouth State loss was tough, with neither team losing a set by more than five points until the fifth set, where Plymouth picked up a 15-8 win. Junior Sydney Hartsock (Snohomish, Wash.) had 15 kills on the day,
while Patterson added 12 and senior Danielle Boniello (Golden's Bridge, N.Y.) chipped in with 11. Three players had 20 or more digs, led by Patterson with 24, Wong with 23 and junior Laurie Wollin (Colleyville,
Texas) with 20.

FOOTBALL TEAM FALLS TO TRINITY


The Panther football team suffered a 16-0 loss at the hands of 6-0 Trinity last weekend. The Bantams improved on their nation's-best scoring defense,
which was allowing 3.2 points/game entering the game. Trinity out gained Middlebury 361-216 on the day, while allowing the Panthers in their territory only once during the second half.

Trinity scored on its first possession of the game with a 25-yard field goal. Middlebury drove 69 yards on its next drive, giving them a first and goal from the Trinity two after a big 45-yard completion from Junior quarterback Mike Keenan (Rutland, Vt.) to junior Mike Murray (Larchmont, N.Y.). A two-yard touchdown run was called back after a holding penalty, while another holding penalty left the Panthers with a first and goal from the 22. Three plays later, a bad snap led to a missed 21-yard field goal from junior Andy Bohlin (Waterville Valley, N.H.). Middlebury had another
chance to get on the board late in the first half after an interception by junior Phil Reiff (Hinsdale, Ill.) gave them the ball on the Trinity 28. A low 31-yard field goal attempt from Bohlin was blocked, ending the half.

Trinity scored on its opening possession of the second half on a two-yard touchdown run. A Trinity drive late in the third quarter and another early in the fourth quarter were ended by interceptions by Middlebury's junior linebacker Richard Decembrele (Walpole, Mass.). Trinity added another score late in the game with a 41-yard interception return with 10 seconds left to play.
Keenan went 16 for 35 on the day for 142 yards with two interceptions, while junior Eric Shanley (Plymouth, Mass.) gained 35 yards on 13 carries on the ground. Decembrele had a big game defensively with 14
tackles, two picks; two pass break-ups and a sack. The performance earned him NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

FIELD HOCKEY TEAM WINS ONLY GAME OF THE WEEK

The Panther field hockey team remained perfect with a 2-1 overtime win at Tufts. The Panthers are now 12-0 on the season and are expected to be ranked #1 in the nation after The College of New Jersey lost last weekend.

At Tufts, senior Char Glessner (Ipswich, Mass.) scored with just eight seconds left in overtime to give the Panthers the win. The goal gave her 100 points for her career at Middlebury, ranking her third all-time.
Glessner scored the equalizer earlier in the game after Tufts had taken a 1-0 lead 11:29 into the contest. She now leads the team with nine goals and 22 points on the season. First-year player Meg McGillen (Harwich, Mass.) made four saves in goal.

For her impressive performance, Glessner was named the NESCAC Player
of the Week.

WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS ONLY GAME OF THE WEEK

The Middlebury College women's soccer team lost its only game of the week as they fell by a score of 2-1 at Tufts. The Jumbos opened the scoring late in the first half with a goal on a corner kick. Tufts increased the lead to 2-0 at the 75:22 mark with another goal following a corner kick. Middlebury got on the board with 4:22 left to play as junior Brittany Cronin (Aurora, Colo.) ripped a shot home from the outside. The Panthers kept up the pressure, but could not get the equalizer as they fell 2-1. Junior Els Van Woert (Shelburne, Vt.) made one save in goal.
