FIELD HOCKEY TEAM FALLS IN NCAA TITLE
The Panther field hockey team saw its season come to a tough ending last weekend with a 4-1 loss in the NCAA Championship game. Middlebury ends the year setting school records for wins (19), winning percentage (.950),
winning streak (19 games), goals in a season (71), while tying the school mark with seven shutouts.
In the 2-1 semifinal win over Cortland State, Middlebury opened the scoring just 6:18 into the game with her team-leading 19th goal of the season from
senior Char Glessner (Ipswich, Mass.). The goal was scored as sophomore Channing Weymouth (Plymouth, N.H.) made a nice feed to Glessner from the top of the circle before she finished with a low shot for the goal. The game remained at 1-0 for the remainder of the half, with Middlebury holding a 6-2 shots advantage at the break.
The Red Dragons tied the game just 1:43 into the second half as Kelli Johnson scored on a rebound. First-year player Meg McGillen (Harwich, Mass.) made the first save on a shot from Jessica Ueltschi, but the rebound came to Johnson who gathered it in before snapping a shot into the cage to tie the game at one. Middlebury was threatening later in the half, forcing a penalty corner. Junior Ashley Pullen (Oakland, Maine) injected the ball to senior Abigail Lamb (Mendham, N.J.), who scored her 14th goal in eight games with a
rocket from the outside at 23:03. The Panthers thought they had gained some breathing room later in the half, but an apparent goal by Lamb was waved off. Cortland's best chance to tie the game came with 11:22 left, but Johnson was unable to convert a crossing pass from just outside the cage. Middlebury came on strong after that, keeping Cortland State out of the area
for the remainder of the game. Middlebury held a 14-6 shots advantage in the game as well as a 12-8 edge in penalty corners. McGillen ended the game with four saves for Middlebury, while Jessica Anderson made eight stops for Cortland State.
In the title game, Middlebury saw its perfect season come to an end as they fell 4-1 to Salisbury. The four goals were the most Middlebury has given up in a game this season, having only given up three goals once. The Sea Gulls never trailed after Tracey Lloyd scored 5:22 into the game. Lloyd carried the ball in from outside the left part of the circle and fired a shot high into the net for her 10th goal of the season. Six minutes later, junior Erin Budd found Elliott waiting unmarked in the front of the cage with a perfect cross from the left wing. Elliott slammed the ball into a wide-open net for her 17th goal of the season to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 edge. Middlebury cut the deficit in half with 18:39 left in the opening stanza. Pullen rebounded a shot off the goalie's pads, and pushed the ball out to Glessner, who rifled in a shot from into the upper left corner of the
net from 15 yards out for her 20th goal of the season. Salisbury made it 3-1 when Elliott scored 6:29 into the second half. Budd started the score with a free hit from the left side. Elliott accepted the offering from 10 yards out and stroked in her second goal of the game and 18th of the season. The Sea Gulls scored their final goal with 23:05 left, as senior Lindsey Elliott took a short pass from freshman Abbey Rowe on the right wing and shoveled in her 18th tally of the season. Salisbury outshot Middlebury 18-10 and held a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners. McGillen collected a season-high 12 saves in a losing effort.
Glessner, Weymouth and senior Missy Krempa (Johnstown, N.Y.) were named to the NCAA All-Tournament team.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY OPENS SEASON AT 1-1
The Middlebury College women's hockey team opened up its season with a 1-0 loss to Bowdoin at the Kenyon Arena. The loss snaps a 125-game (122-0-3) regular season league (ECAC/NESCAC) unbeaten streak that has existed since the league's inception in '95-'96.
Middlebury came out strong and controlled the majority of play for the game's first 10 minutes. Bowdoin had two great chances to score, but Middlebury's senior Kati Madouros (White Plains, N.Y.) made two big saves to
preserve the scoreless tie after the first period. The Polar Bears did get on the board at 13:14 of the second period with a backhander through the five-hole. Middlebury turned up the pressure very late in the game as they had a power play for the final 1:16 of the contest. With their goaltender pulled, the Panthers were unable to get off a quality shot as Bowdoin held
on for the 1-0 win. The Panther power play was 0/6 on the night, while the Polar Bears did not have a power play opportunity. Madouros ended the game
with 15 saves.

enough as the Panthers added three in the third for the win. The power play improved drastically, going 4 for 8 on the night. Junior Lorna Gifis (Princeton, N.J.) and sophomore Emily Quizon (Chino Hills, Calif.) each
scored a pair of goals in the game. Senior Jean Butler (W. Hartford, Conn.), junior Lindsay Jones (E. Berlin, Pa.) and sophomore Gloria Velez (S. Windsor, Conn.) each had a goal in the game.
