b>MEN'S HOCKEY WINS PRIMELINK TOURNAMENT

 

The Middlebury College men's hockey team picked up a pair of wins last weekend as they won the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout hosted by Plattsburgh State.
In the semifinals, Ripton, Vermont natives Levi Doria and Brian Phinney each scored a goal to lift Middlebury to a 2-1 win over Potsdam. Doria struck 15:18 into the first period, while Phinney scored at 8:47 of the second period. Potsdam cut the lead in half at 6:35 of the third period, but it was enough as sophomore Yen-I Chen (Rigaud, Que.) made 21 saves for the win.
In the title game against Plattsburgh, rookies John Sales (Chatham,
Ill.) and Darwin Hunt (Winnetka, Ill.) each scored a pair of goals to lift Middlebury to a 5-2 win. Senior Kevin Cooper (Mississauga, Ont.). scored the other goal as junior Tim Graham (N. Reading, Mass.) notched a pair of assists. Chen made 18 saves in goal for the win.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS ST. JOSEPH'S

 

The Panther women's basketball team had little trouble with St. Joseph's of Vermont as they picked up an 82-50 win in their only game of the week.
The game was tight early, before a 13-3 run gave Middlebury a 25-15 lead with 7:59 left in the first half. The Panthers closed the first half on a 10-0 run to take a comfortable 41-22 lead at the break. The lead slowly increased in the second half before every Middlebury player had scored in the game. Junior Elyse Carlson (Braintree, Mass.) led the team with 21 points, senior Alexis Batten (Avalon, N.J.) scored 17, while senior Kate Shillo (Bloomfield, Conn.) scored 14 and pulled down 18 rebounds.

MEN'S BASKETBALL IMPROVES TO 3-1

The Panther men's basketball team won a pair of in-state games last week to improve to 3-1 on the season. Middlebury topped St. Joseph's 100-65 before beating Southern Vermont 83-68.
At St. Joe's, Middlebury jumped out to a 12-2 lead and never looked back. The lead grew to as many as 25 in the first half and 40 in the second half before the final buzzer sounded. Junior Mike Salek (Fairfield, Conn.) led the team with 22 points, first-year player Bobby Marcoux (Campbell Hall,
N.Y.) scored 13, junior Clark Read (Pepper Pike, Ohio) netted 12, while senior John Donnelly (Roswell, Ga.) added 11.
After the break, Middlebury stayed on track as they outscored their opponent 39-27 in the second half to come away with the win. Read led the team with 20 points on 8 of 14 shooting, while Salek and senior Nate Anderson (Hinesburg, Vt.) added 18 points apiece.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY WINS A PAIR OF HOME LEAGUE GAMES

The Middlebury College women's hockey team was back on track last week as they won two NESCAC league games at the Kenyon Arena.
Sophomore Liz Yale-Loehr (Ithaca, N.Y.) opened the scoring at 12:48 of the period, which is where it would stay until Trinity tied the game at 6:48 of the second period. First-year player Shannon Tarrant (Brookfield,
Conn.) gave Middlebury a 2-1 lead before Yale-Loehr made it 3-1 at 14:08 of the second period. The Bantams made it a one-goal game midway through the third period, but it wasn't enough as Middlebury outshot Trinity 42-11 en route to the win. Senior Kati Madouros (White Plains, N.Y.) made nine saves in goal for the win.
Goals were plentiful the next day as the Panthers blanked Wesleyan, 9-0. Junior Lorna Gifis (Princeton, N.J.) and first-year player Shannon Sylvester (Randolph, N.J.) each scored two goals in the game. Sophomore Emily Quizon (Chino Hills, Calif.) had four assists in the game, sophomore Jen Yerigan (Isanti, Minn.) had one goal and two assists, while Tarrant had one goal and one assist. Sophomore Kate Kogut (Springfield, Mass.) made three saves in goal.
