MEN'S HOCKEY SPLITS A PAIR OF HOME GAMES

The Middlebury College men's hockey team played its first two games at the Kenyon Arena last weekend as they hosted Salem State and Southern Maine.

The second-ranked Panthers dropped the home-opener as they fell 4-2 to Salem State. The Panthers were 0/9 on the power play, while giving up two shorthanded goals. The loss breaks a 40-game regular season home winning streak for the Panthers that dates back to a loss to Norwich in 2000.

Salem State opened the scoring at 4:21 with a shorthanded goal. Middlebury answered just 1:45 later as first-year player Evgeny Saidachev (Gig Harbor, Wash.) found rookie John Sales (Chatham, Ill.) in the slot before he finished for the equalizer. Salem netted their second shorthanded goal of the period at 14:48 to take a 2-1 lead. The Vikings added a third goal with 1:08 left in the period with a power play goal. There would be no more scoring until 3:37 of the third period when senior Kevin Cooper(Mississauga, Ont.). scored on a rebound. Salem answered at 6:19 and went on to the 4-2 win. Sophomore Yen-I Chen (Rigaud, Que.) made a dozen saves in 46 minutes, while senior Marc Scheuer (Pt. Claire, Que.) made five saves in relief.

Middlebury bounced back the next day with a 6-2 win over Southern Maine in their final game of the semester. The win improved Middlebury head coach Bill Beaney to 11-0 against his brother Jeff, the head coach of Southern Maine.

Middlebury opened the scoring at 6:04 as senior Mike Kennedy (Darien, Conn.) wristed in a shot from the right wing. Southern Maine answered at 12:28 to tie the game at one. Kennedy notched his second of the game with 3:01 left in the period as he ripped a shot home from the left wing that found the back of the net off the far pipe. The second period saw no scoring for the first 18:59 when the Huskies scored a power play goal that tied the game at two. Senior John Dawson (New Canaan, Conn.) gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead with a power play goal at 4:35 of the third period with a shot down low after a feed from Sales. Middlebury made it a 4-2 game at 7:20 as Saidachev found the back of the net with a snap shot down low. Sophomore Jeff Smith (Nepean, Ont.) increased the lead to 5-2 as he scored with a backhander to the five-hole. Sophomore Ryan Cahill (N. Andover, Mass.) scored the Panther's fourth and final goal of the period at 16:52 as he scored on a rebound. Scheuer made 18 saves in goal for the win.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ENDS SEMESTER AT 4-0

The Panther women's basketball team won its only game of the week as they topped Castleton State 65-48. Middlebury's second game of the week vs. Green Mountain was postponed due to inclement weather. A makeup date has not been announced.

Middlebury opened the first half with a 10-2 run to take an 18-6 lead over Castleton State. The lead grew to as many as 20 in the first half before the Spartans opened the second half on an 18-4 run to cut the lead to 40-38. The Panthers regained the momentum and slowly pulled away for the win. Sophomore Kate Fehsenfeld (Zionsville, Ind.) led the team with 20 points in the game, followed by junior Elyse Carlson (Braintree, Mass.) with 19 and senior Alexis Batten (Avalon, N.J.) with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

MEN'S BASKETBALL IMPROVES WINS TWO MORE

The Middlebury College men's basketball team won a pair of home games last week to finish the semester with a 5-1 mark. The second win of the week came over 23rd-ranked Hamilton.

In the home-opener against Castleton, a first half saw eight ties, leaving Middlebury with a 38-24 lead at the break. The Panthers opened the second half on a 7-0 run and slowly increased the lead to as many as 13. The Spartans made a late run, but it wasn't enough as Middlebury came away with the 90-80 win. Junior Clark Read (Pepper Pike, Ohio) led the team with 28 points and 13 rebounds on four of four shooting from three-point range. Senior Koby Altman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 16 points and eight boards, while junior Mike Salek (Fairfield, Conn.) netted 15.

Middlebury opened their game with Hamilton on a 23-6 run. Hamilton made a run of their own to cut the lead to 25-21 later in the half. The teams exchanged 10-0 runs in the second half before the Panthers made seven of eight free throws in the last 40 seconds to seal the win. Salek led the team with 27 points on 7-11 shooting from three-point range. Senior David Coratti (Pawling, N.Y.) added 14 points, while Altman scored a dozen and dished out eight assists.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY PICKS UP TWO LEAGUE WINS ON THE ROAD

The Panther women's hockey team played its first two road games last week as they had little trouble at Amherst and Connecticut College.

Middlebury exploded for four third period goals as they blanked Amherst 7-0, out shooting the Jeffs 52-19. First-year player Shannon Sylvester (Randolph, N.J.) scored two goals in the game, while five other Panthers had solo goals. First-year players player Shannon Tarrant (Brookfield, Conn.), Abby Kurtz-Phelan (Denver, Colo.) and Emily McNamara (N. Hampton, N.H.) each had a goal and an assist in the game, as did sophomore Liz Yale-Loehr (Ithaca, N.Y.). Sophomore Kate Kogut (Springfield, Mass.) made 19 saves in goal.

The next day, Middlebury wasted no time in jumping on Connecticut College, as they scored four first period goals en route to a 9-2 win. Junior Lorna Gifis(Princeton, N.J.) and first-year player Alison Graddock (Stowe, Vt.) each had a hat trick in the game. Yale-Loehr had three assists in the game, while Tarrant, senior Jean Butler (W. Hartford, Conn.) and first-year player Samantha Ritt (Mequon, Wis.) each had a pair of assists. Senior Kati Madouros (White Plains, N.Y.) made eight saves in goal.

SWIM TEAMS TOP SPRINGFIELD

The Middlebury College swimming and diving teams took on Amherst over the weekend, both coming up short in Massachusetts. The men's team fell 155-86, while the women suffered a 142-101 loss.

Winning both the one and three meter diving competitions for the men was sophomore Tristram Arscott (Atherton, Calif.). He captured the three-meter competition with 209 points, while earning 253 points in the one-meter event. Placing second in two events on the day was first-year swimmer Robert Collier (Catonsville, Md.). Collier earned a time of 2:01.13 in the 200 IM, while completing the 200 back in 1:58.95. Also placing second were senior Karl Whittington (Carrboro, N.C.) in the 500 free (4:52.83) and sophomore Robert Hillas (Princeton, N.J.) in the 1000 free (10:11.65).

On the women's side, senior Kellianne Egan (Katonah, N.Y.) won the 1000 free in 10:53.88, while senior Sarah Groff (Cooperstown, N.Y.) was a victor in the 500 free with a time of 5:15.39. Placing second in both diving events was senior Courtney Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.). She earned 258 points in the one-meter competition, while scoring 232 in the three-meter event. Placing second in the 200 free was Groff with a time of 1:58.66, while sophomore McKenna Moreau (Canton, N.Y.) finished second in the 200 back in 2:12.56. Also earning a second place finish on the day were first-year swimmer Barbara Van der Veer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the 50 free (24.76) and senior Lizzy DeWitt (Madison, Wis.) in the 100 free (53.79).
