MEN’S SWIM TEAM PLACES FOURTH AT NESCAC’S
The Middlebury College men’s swimming and diving teams finished third overall at the NESCAC Championship meet hosted by Bowdoin over the weekend. Williams won the event, followed by Amherst, Tufts and Middlebury.
Senior Rob Collier (Catonsville, Md.) had an amazing weekend, capturing three individual NESCAC titles, while placing second as a member of three different relay teams. The senior won the 200 IM in 1:52.81, while setting new NESCAC and school records with wins in the 100 and 200 fly. Collier broke the 50 second mark with a time of 49.85 to win the 100 fly, while finishing in 1:50.39 to capture the 200 fly.
First-year diver Brooks Farrar (Medfield, Mass.) was named the NESCAC diver of the meet after winning both the one-meter and three-meter diving championships. The rookie won the 1M event with 365.86 points, while earning 466.85 points in the 3M event. Farrar’s coach Lisa Gibbs was named the NESCAC Diving Coach of the Meet.
First-year racer John Dillon (Wellesley, Mass.) also broke the 50 second mark in the 100 fly, finishing second overall with a time of 49.85. He also placed second behind Collier in the 200 fly, finishing the race in 1:50.66.
Sophomore Kevin O’Rourke (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) finished fifth in the 200 free (1:42.96), while senior Michael Young (Leawood, Kan.) placed fifth in three-meter diving (448.40). First-year racer Schuyler Beeman (Guildford, Conn.) placed fourth in the 100 backstroke in 52.60, while earning a best time of 20.82 in the 50 free. Sophomore Zach Woods (Monroe, N.Y.) finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.24, while placing third with a best time of 52.12 in the 100 backstroke.
Three Middlebury relay teams each earned second place finishes at the meet. The 400 medley team comprised of Woods, Collier, Beeman and senior Tim Lux (Sandy Hook, Conn.) finished with a time of 3:25.53. Woods, Collier, Beeman and junior Peter Bell (Deerfield, Mass.) finished in 1:34.71 in the 200 medley relay, while Beeman, Collier, O’Rourke and senior John Rayburn (Washington, D.C.) finished the 400 free in 3:05.32.

MEN’S HOCKEY ADVANCES TO NESCAC SEMI’S
The Panther men’s hockey team will make its seventh consecutive trip to the NESCAC semifinals after a 5-1 win over Williams in the quarterfinals. The Panthers will take on Colby, a 5-1 winner over Connecticut College, at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3rd at Bowdoin. The host school will meet Amherst in the other semifinal at 1:00 p.m. with the title game slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Middlebury jumped out early with three goals in the game’s first 7:39. Junior Sam Driver (St. Albans, Vt.) opened the scoring at 1:54 as he scored with a backhander from the slot. The lead doubled 2:05 later as junior Mickey Gilchrist (Ottawa, Ont.) scored with a shot through traffic on the left side. Senior Darwin Hunt (Winnetka, Ill.) ended the three-goal run at 7:39 as he scored on a rebound from the slot after a shot from Driver was saved by Mark Pulde of Williams. The save would be his last as he was replaced by Rick Redmond after the goal.
Williams scored the only goal of the second period, as Steve Bruch’s shot deflected in off a Middlebury defender at the 11:50 mark.
The game remained at 3-1 until the 13:39 mark of the third period when the Panthers gained some breathing room. Driver scored his second of the game as he carried the puck through the middle and scored with a quick wrister into the left side of the net. Sophomore Jamie McKenna (Lake Placid, N.Y.) added an empty-netter with 20 seconds remaining to make it a 5-1 final. Driver’s goal was the only one allowed by Redmond, who made 28 saves in relief of Pulde. Sophomore Doug Raeder (Needham, Mass.) ended the day with 25 between the pipes for Middlebury.

SKI TEAMS COME IN THIRD AT WILLIAMS
The Middlebury College alpine and nordic ski teams hosted the EISA Championships over the weekend at the Rikert Ski Touring Center and the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. The top four teams remained the same for the sixth and final carnival of the season. Dartmouth completed its carnival sweep, finishing with 928.5 points, followed by Vermont in second (858), Middlebury in third (833) and UNH in fourth (682).
In the men’s 10K free race, sophomore Simeon Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.) led the Middlebury racers in sixth place (25:19), followed by junior Jimmy Ades (Shelburne, Vt.) in 19th (26:31) and sophomore Tim Reynolds (Bristol, Vt.) in 20th (26:32).
The skiers finished in pairs on the women’s 5K free race, with Dartmouth, Vermont and Middlebury placing racers one through six. Dartmouth’s Sara Studebaker won the even with a time of 13:52, followed by her teammate Elsa Sargent (13:56). Finishing in third place was Vermont’s Katrina Howe (14:06), with Carina Hamel in fourth (14:12). Middlebury’s skiers, sophomore Cassidy Edwards (Glen Arbor, Mich.) (14:15) and senior Jenny Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.) (14:22) finished in fourth and fifth places respectively. Sophomore Robyn Anderson (Stowe, Vt.) finished 17th in 14:41 to round out Middlebury’s scorers.
At the Snow Bowl, the Middlebury women and Vermont men won the slalom events. Lindsay Mann of Dartmouth was overall winner on the women’s side, finishing with a time of 1:46.88. Vermont’s Kara Crow placed second (1:47.99), followed by Michelanne Shields of Dartmouth in third (1:48.30). Middlebury sophomore Tucker Burton (Breckenridge, Colo.) came in fourth in 1:48.31, while UNH’s Veronique Archambault-Leger rounded out the top five (1:48.37). Middlebury’s other scorers were junior Krissy Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) (1:48.97) in sixth and sophomore Mattie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) in seventh (1:49.38).
Greg Hardy of Vermont won the men’s race, finishing with a time of 1:32.55. David Chodounsky of Dartmouth was second (1:33.18), Zachary Brown of Vermont came in third (1:33.67), followed by Middlebury sophomore Andrew Wagner (Traverse City, Mich.) in fourth (1:33.81). Evan Weiss of Dartmouth rounded out the top five with a time of 1:34.01. Middlebury junior Zeke Davisson (Bethel, Maine) in sixth (1:34.09) and junior Clayton Reed (Stowe, Vt.) in seventh (1:34.28) finished out the Panthers’ scorers.
On Saturday, Middlebury's top finishers in the 20K classical nordic race were Hamilton in sixth (58:39), Reynolds in 23rd (1:01:56) and Ades, who placed 25th (1:02:11).
In the women’s 15K classical race, Edwards led the Middlebury women in seventh (54:24), Hamilton came in eighth (54:30), while Anderson was 10th (55:22).
Veronique Archambault-Leger of UNH won the giant slalom, finishing with a combined time of 2:05.67. Dartmouth's Michelanne Shields finished in second (2:06.24), senior Lindsay Brush (Charlotte, Vt.) of Middlebury was third (2:06.34), while Ashley Spina (2:06.59) and Chelsea Lynch of Vermont (2:06.88) were fourth and fifth respectively. Muirhead was ninth (2:07.96), while senior Tara Martin (Lyndonville, Vt.) was 17th (2:09.12) to round out the Middlebury scorers.
In the men's race, Wagner captured the GS with a combined time of 2:00.34. Eric Mann of Williams came in second (2:00.55), followed by Evan Weiss of Dartmouth in third (2:00.93), Middlebury junior Alec Tarberry (N. Conway, N.H.) in fourth (2:01.21) and Dave Chodounsky of Dartmouth in fifth (2:01.32). Junior Joseph Swensson (Niantic, Conn.) was Middlebury's other scorer, placing ninth overall with a time of 2:02.

BUTLER
SETS SCHOOL MARK IN INDOOR TRACK
Senior Beth Butler (Bronxville, N.Y.) turned in a great performance for the Middlebury women at the Open New England Championships last weekend at Boston University. Butler finished seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:16.13. Her time was a new school record, earned her All-New England honors, while also qualifying her for the upcoming indoor NCAA’s.

PAIRINGS SET FOR NESCAC WOMEN’S HOCKEY TOURNEY
The pairings are set for the NESCAC women's hockey championship, which will be hosted by Middlebury on March 3rd and 4th at the Kenyon Arena. Middlebury will take on Hamilton at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Bowdoin meets Amherst in the other semifinal at 4:00 p.m. The winners will meet for the NESCAC Championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
