WOMEN’S LACROSSE WITH THREE NESCAC WINS

The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team had a 3-0 NESCAC week, clinching its seventh straight NESCAC regular season title. The Panthers will once again host the NESCAC semifinals and finals on May 5th and 6th on Kohn Field.

The Panthers won their 14th straight meeting with Bates as they handed the Bobcats an 18-5 loss on Kohn Field. Middlebury jumped out quick with three goals in the game’s first 2:41. Bates scored two of the next three before the Panthers went on another three-goal run to take a 7-2 lead with 16:04 left in the first half. Senior Kim Walker (Ridgewood, N.J.) tallied two of her three first half goals during the spurt. Molly Wagner scored for Bates at the 12:39 mark, with Middlebury scoring the final two of the half for a 9-3 lead at the intermission.

Bates scored 29 seconds into the second half, before Middlebury went on a four-goal run with a pair from junior Mimi Schatz (Baltimore, Md.), to make it a 13-4 game at the 23:03 mark. Avery Masters scored Bates’ final goal with 22:14 remaining as Middlebury netted the contest’s final five goals.

Walker and Schatz scored four apiece to lead Middlebury, while junior Amanda Smith (Greenwich, Conn.) and senior Liza Humes (Greenwood Village, Colo.) each had two goals and two assists. Four different players scored for Bates, with Wagner earning a goal and an assist. Sophomore Blair Bowie (Washington, D.C.) picked up the win with six saves in 55 minutes, while Katie Nickerson made 20 saves between the pipes for the Bobcats.

Schatz scored her second goal of the game with 4:02 remaining off a perfect feed by Smith to break a 9-9 tie as Middlebury pulled out a 10-9 win at Wesleyan.

Middlebury opened up the game's largest lead with 16:51 left in the second half behind three straight goals to break a 6-6 tie and go ahead 9-6. Goals by junior Katherine Entwisle (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), Schatz and Walker in a span of 1:33 made it a three-goal margin.

Wesleyan came right back to score the next three goals to make it a 9-9 deadlock. The Cardinals controlled the draw but Middlebury forced a turnover and brought the ball into the offensive zone. Smith made a sharp pass to a cutting Schatz who put the ball in for the go-ahead and eventual game-winner.

Wesleyan had several possessions in the final four minutes including a free-position attempt by Cortney Tetrault with 1:17 to go but Bowie came up with her 10th save of the game on the low shot to her right. Wesleyan got the ball back into the Middlebury end with :40 to go but a good stick-check by junior Reid Berrien (Westport, Conn.) gave Middlebury the ball and a chance to run out the clock. Wesleyan goalie sophomore Rachel Stemerman posted 11 stops in the Cardinal net.
Humes also had two goals and two assists for Middlebury as she upped her season total to 32 points, second behind Smith. Senior Claire Edelen (Sparks, Md.) dished out three assists for Middlebury.

SOFTBALL PLAYS SEVEN GAMES

The Middlebury College softball team had a busy week with seven games, including five NESCAC west contests. The week began as Middlebury split a double-header against visiting Plymouth State on Wednesday, losing game one 13-7 and winning game two 8-2.Game one saw both teams combine for 20 runs on 28 hits, including 14 for extra-bases.

Plymouth State scored a run in each of the first two innings before plating three in the third, building a 5-0 lead. They added another three in the top of the fifth inning before Middlebury scored two runs in the bottom of the frame, cutting the lead to 8-2.

The lead grew to 10-2 in top of the sixth, before a bases-loaded single by senior Colleen Sullivan (Concord, Mass.) scored two for Middlebury, closing the gap to 10-4. Plymouth added three in the seventh, while junior Katelyn Cannella (Pleasantville, N.Y.) ripped a triple to left. Sophomore Amelia Magistrali (Torrington, Conn.) followed with an RBI triple of her own, scoring Cannella. Magistrali would later score on a wild pitch. A two-out RBI double by Sullivan cut the lead to 13-7 as MacFarland enticed senior Jennifer Williams (Scarborough, Maine) into a game-ending pop-out to second base to seal the win.

Sullivan went 3-4 with two doubles and three RBI for Middlebury, as Cannella and Magistrali both went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In game two, Plymouth State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Middlebury exploded for four runs in the bottom of the second. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Cannella scored junior Lily Hamburger (Silver Spring, Md.). A wild pitch by Plymouth State’s Kat Roland plated her pitching adversary, junior Brittany Burke (Medfield, Mass.), to tie the game at 2-2. A two-out, two-run double by senior Maura Casey (Garden City, N.Y.) gave Middlebury the 4-2 lead.

Middlebury added four more runs in the fourth to earn the 8-2 win. Casey’s 4-4 and 4 RBI game led the Middlebury offense. Burke was strong in the circle, allowing only six hits and striking out seven.

Middlebury scored two runs in the fifth inning to earn a 3-2 win over Amherst in game one of a NESCAC west league series. Amherst took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings. Annalise Rodli led off the game with a single and was bunted to second, before scoring on a single to center by Elizabeth Neckes. In the second inning, Julia Cummings singled up the middle and moved to second on a SAC bunt. She later scored on a double to left by Emily Bularzik.

Middlebury got on the board in the bottom of the inning as senior Ellen Sargent (St. Albans, Vt.) doubled to left and later scored on a double to center by Sullivan. The game-winning rally started with two outs in the fifth, when Cannella singled to right before stealing second base. She scored on a triple to center by Magistrali to tie the game at two. Casey then drove in Magistrali with a single to center to make it a 3-2 contest.

Williams got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth and retired the side in the seventh to earn the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out four. Magistrali was the lone Panther with a multiple-hit day, owning a single and a double.

Middlebury fell in game one on Saturday 2-0, but bounced back to earn a 1-0 win in game two, taking two of three from Amherst this weekend. Amherst struck in the first inning of game one as Annalise Rodli singled, stole second, before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Rodli scored on a play at the plate as the next batter, Elizabeth Neckes, grounded to second. The Jeffs threatened again in the fourth, but Burke got Emily Bularzik to ground out to end the inning with runners on second and third. Middlebury had a pair of singles in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to capitalize.

Burke got out of another second and third jam in the fifth, as she got Neckes to line out and Ralina Shaw to pop out to end the inning.

Amherst scored its second run in the sixth as Holly Trace singled up the middle before being pinch-run for. A single down the right field line by Julia Cummings sent Kelly King to third, before a SAC fly to left by Emily Neill plated King for the 2-0 lead.

Alexandra Chang-Graham and Maddie Tamagni combined to earn the four-hit shutout, with Tamagni earning the win in relief. Each hurler allowed two hits, with Chang-Graham striking out four and Tamagni fanning five. Burke took the loss for Middlebury, allowing two runs and nine hits over seven innings of work.

Four different players singled for Middlebury, while Rodli went 3-4 with a double and two steals to pace Amherst. Trace and Cummings also had two-hits in the game.

One run would be all Middlebury needed in game two as Williams threw a two-hit shutout for the win. Each team left a pair on base in the second inning, before the Panthers left them loaded in the third.

Middlebury scored its lone run in the fourth as junior Allison Bard (Jenkintown, Pa.) led off with a single, before Williams sacrificed her to second as she continued on to third base. Following a ground out, Bard would score the game’s only run on a wild pitch. Senior Susan Miranowski (St. Paul, Minn.) went 3-3 in the game, while three other Panthers had singles.

Middlebury scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Panthers rallied to win the second game and swept a NESCAC West Division doubleheader against host Hamilton on Sunday. Middlebury won the nightcap 6-5 after cruising to an 8-2 victory in Game 1.

BASEBALL COMPETES AT AMHERST

The Middlebury College baseball team returned to action as they dropped two of three NESCAC west league games at Amherst over the weekend.

Middlebury took game one of the key three-game set at as the Panthers earned a 3-2 win. Junior Justin Wright (W. Simsbury, Conn.) threw the nine-inning complete game, allowing one earned run and five hits on the afternoon.

Senior Noah Walker (Oakland, Calif.) got things going for the Panthers in the third when he doubled to right center, and was eventually driven in by a single from first-year player Erich Enns (Lansdale, Pa.) that gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead. The Panthers chalked up another run in the fourth inning when junior Gabe Broughton (Barrington, Ill.) started a two-out rally with a single to right field. Broughton advanced to second on a wild pitch and was brought home on a double from junior Nick Lefeber (Branford, Conn.).

Wright did not allow a base runner in the third, fourth, fifth or sixth innings, with eight of 12 outs coming via groundout. Middlebury tallied what would be the game-winning run in the seventh when sophomore Mark Shimrock (Lansdale, Pa.) singled through the right side to bring in Walker.

Angus Schaller doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth and later stole third. Wright looked as though he would escape unharmed yet again when he got Thal to hit a ground ball that was mis-handled, allowing Schaller to score for the Jeffs’ first run of the game. Amherst again threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but Wright was able to hang on for the 3-2 win.

Broughton, Walker, Lanahan and Enns each finished with two hits for the Panthers, with Walker and Lanahan each going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.

On Saturday, Middlebury dropped a pair of key NESCAC west games played at Amherst. Nick Kehoe fired a one-hitter in the first game to lead the Lord Jeffs to a 2-1 victory, while Middlebury gave up seven late runs to fall 16-6 in game two.

After Andy Thal lined out to left field, Mark Mazzone singled down the right field line and was moved over to third when Brendan Powers doubled to right center. Neal Allar drove in Mazzone with a single to center field, but Enns gunned out Powers at the plate to keep the score at 1-0.

Tom Scott kept the bottom of the first going with a double to left center, advancing Allar to third, but Junior Jack Britton (Carmel, Calif.) got Jared Banner to ground out and end the inning, escaping with just a one-run deficit despite allowing four hits.

Shimrock wasted no time in the top of the second, belting a lead-off homer over the right field fence to tie the game at 1-1. Britton settled down in the bottom half of the frame, retiring the side in order and picking up his first strikeout of the game to end the inning.

The game was a scoreless pitchers’ duel until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Amherst scored to take a 2-1 lead. The Panthers threatened in the seventh but could not tie the game. Britton (3-1) struck out four and walked two, allowing just one hit after the first inning. The Amherst defense committed three errors, but Kehoe (3-1) did not walk a batter and did not give up a hit other than the Shimrock homer. Walker walked to load the bases in the first with no outs after Broughton and Enns reached on singles.

Amherst held a 7-2 lead after three innings in game two, but the Panthers came back with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Enns to cut the lead to 7-6.

Scott drove in Powers with a single to give Amherst an 8-6 lead in the fourth, but neither team scored again until the bottom of the seventh, when Amherst scored before sealing the game with seven runs in the eighth. Palladino picks up the loss for the Panthers, moving to 2-1 on the season. Enns went 3-4 with two RBI, while three other players singled.

MEN’S LACROSSE HAS 1-1 WEEK

The Panther men’s lacrosse team had a 1-1 week and are now in a battle to host a NESCAC first round game on Sunday, with the 2-4 seeds in the NESCAC standings earning the right. Wesleyan and Tufts will look to claim the top seed in the tourney this week.

Middlebury jumped out to a 9-0 lead en route to an 18-7 victory over visiting Bates on Tuesday at Kohn Field. Seven different Panthers were involved in the early 9-0 run, highlighted by a pair of goals by sophomores Tom Petty (Newburyport, Mass.) and Skyler Hopkins (Easton, Md.). The Bobcats ended a 27:20 scoring drought when Justin Simon scored his first of his team-high three goals with 2:40 left in the second quarter, cutting the Middlebury lead to 9-1. Both teams added a goal later in the second as Middlebury took a 10-2 lead into intermission.

Eleven seconds into the third quarter, Middlebury junior Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) picked up a groundball to score one of his team-high four goals. At the 14:06 mark, sophomore Mike Stone’s (Boston, Mass.) tally gave the Panthers a 12-2 lead. Bates scored the next two goals, cutting the Panther advantage to 12-4. Middlebury maintained the offensive pressure with a two-goal spurt of their own late in the third before a Bobcat goal by Bryan Frates cut the lead to 14-5. Middlebury outscored Bates in the fourth quarter 4-2, including a goal and an assist by Cabrera setting the final score at 18-7.

Cabrera’s four goals led the Panthers, as Stone scored three and Petty, Hopkins, and rookie Bart Witmer (Greenwich, Conn.) each chipped in a pair of goals. Simon led Bates with three goals and an assist, while Frates added a goal and two assists. Panther senior goalkeeper Alex Palmisano (Southport, Conn.) started the game in goal for the Panthers, making eight saves and allowing five goals in 46:30 of action.

Wesleyan’s Russ Follansbee scored the game-winner just 23 seconds into overtime, giving the visiting Cardinals a 5-4 victory over Middlebury on Saturday afternoon at Kohn Field. The Panthers won the overtime face-off and managed a quick shot before the 5th ranked Cardinals got control of the ball. The eighteenth-ranked Panthers suffered their third NESCAC defeat, all in overtime, falling to 4-3 in conference play and 7-4 overall. The Cardinals improve to 13-1 on the season and 7-1 in NESCAC action.

Wesleyan started the scoring when Follansbee picked up a groundball deep in Middlebury territory and snuck a shot past goalie Palmisano at the 10:13 mark in the first quarter. The Panthers tied it at one apiece on a man-up goal by senior Nick Bastis (Old Greenwich, Conn.) with 7:19 remaining. Middlebury took a 2-1 lead at the 5:35 mark with a Petty wrap-around shot from the left side that beat Cardinal goalie Charlie Congleton. The lone second quarter goal by Wesleyan’s Jason Ben-Eliyahu tied the game at 2-2 going into halftime.

Neither team managed to score in the third, but a late penalty gave Wesleyan a man-up advantage, and the ball, to start the fourth. Middlebury fought off the penalty only to commit a second one seconds later. With 13:45 left, Mike Hines scored the man-up goal on a bounce shot from the right side, giving the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.

Just under two minutes later the Panthers tied the game at three, when a Hopkins tally from the right side snuck in under the crossbar. Middlebury took a 4-3 lead with 10:02 remaining when Stone scored a man-up goal with a nice assist from Bastis. Wesleyan’s Chris Jasinski scored driving in from the right side with only 22 seconds remaining, forcing the game into overtime.

Bastis and Stone each had a goal and an assist, while Petty and Hopkins both added a goal for the Panthers. Follansbee’s game-high two goals and Jasinski’s goal and an assist led Wesleyan. Palmisano was in net for the entire 60:23 for Middlebury, making 13 saves and allowing five goals. Congleton also played 60:23 in net, allowing four goals and making 10 stops for Wesleyan.
