SKI TEAM OPENS SEASON

The Middlebury College nordic and alpine ski teams opened up the ’08 carnival circuit at the Bates Carnival in Maine. The Panthers finished second only to Dartmouth, followed by Vermont, New Hampshire and Bates.

The alpine teams both placed second in the GS, while capturing the slalom events. Senior Alec Tarberry (N. Conway, N.H.) finished second in the slalom with a time 1:32.55, while capturing the GS title with a time of 1:59.83. Junior Andrew Wagner (Traverse City, Mich.) was the school’s top finisher in the slalom, placing third with a time of 1:32.50, while senior Clayton Reed (Stowe, Vt.) finished eighth (1:32.92). Senior Joseph Swensson (Niantic, Conn.) finished 11th in the GS (2:02.38), while first-year racer Jacob Lund (Hudson, Wis.) placed 18th (2:03.38).

On the women’s side, junior Tucker Burton (Breckenridge, Colo.) finished second in the slalom with a time of 1:37.02. Placing fifth was senior Krissie Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) in 1:39.44, followed by senior Megan Hughes (Killington, Vt.) in seventh (1:40.45). Hughes paced the team in the GS, finishing sixth with a time of 2:06.79. Burton placed 10th (2:07.73), followed by rookie Lindsay Kraft (Coldstream, B.C.) in 11th (2:08.28).

First-year racer Alexa Turzian (Hailey Idaho) was impressive on the nordic side, capturing the 10K classical in 31:50, while placing second in the 5K free in 13:04. Junior Robyn Anderson (Stowe, Vt.) finished 11th in the 5K (13:43), while finishing eighth in the 10K (33:39). Rookie Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) was Middlebury’s other scorer in the 5K, placing 12th with a time of 13:45. Junior Cassidy Edwards (Glen Arbor, Mich.) did the same in the 10K, finishing 11th in 33:53.

The men’s nordic squad was led by junior Tim Reynolds (Bristol, Vt.), who finished second in the 10K free (23:04) and fourth in the 10K classical (26:30). First-year racer Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) placed second in the classical (26:21) and 10th in the freestyle (23:42). Sophomore Mike Mommsen (St. Louis Park, Minn.) was Middlebury’s third scorer, finishing 30th in the freestyle (24:18) and 17th (27:22) in the classical race.

SWIM TEAMS SWEEP IN MAINE

The Panther swimming and diving teams each picked up a pair of wins in Maine over the weekend. The women defeated Colby 190-98, while the men earned a 195-73 win. The teams repeated at Bates, with the men picking up a 216-72 win and the women emerging with a 229-70 victory.

At Colby, three different swimmers broke pool records at the school. Junior Catherine Suppan (Burlington, Vt.) accomplished the feat by winning the 50 back in 27.90, while senior Peter Bell (Deerfield, Mass.) won the 50 breaststroke in 27.88 to break the record for the men. Junior Kevin O’Rourke (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was the third to break a mark, finishing with a time of 1:45.57 in the 200 free.

In the meet at Bates, the women’s 200 medley and 200 free relay teams both broke school records. Suppan, senior Pam Chatikavanij (Bangkok, Thailand), and first-year athletes Annie Friedlander (Deephaven, Minn.) and Jessie Ward (Pittsford, N.Y.) won the medley race in 1:51.86. Chatikavanij, rookie Emily McDonald (Glenwood Springs, Colo.), senior Whitney Thomas (Southborough, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Remington (Madison, Wis.) broke the record in the free relay in 1:40.08. The other pool record broken was by sophomore Katie Soja (Sudbury, Mass.), who won the 1,000 free with a time of 10:36.41.

Five different athletes won three events apiece in the win at Bates. Suppan was a victor in the 200 free and 100 fly to go along with the 200 medley relay, while Chatikavanij won the 200 medley and 200 free relays, as well as the 50 free.

Bell won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, while being a part of the 200 medley relay team, while junior Zach Woods (Monroe, N.Y.) was a victor in the 100 and 200 back, as well as the 200 medley relay. Middlebury’s other triple winner was sophomore John Dillon (Wellesley, Mass.), who earned wins in the 100 fly, 200 free and 200 medley relay.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY EARNS TWO MORE WINS

The Middlebury College women’s hockey team returned to NESCAC play with a 7-2 win over Bowdoin in Kenyon Arena. The first period was scoreless through 13:08, when the Polar Bears took a five-minute major for boarding. The Panthers took advantage and scored three goals in a 3:56 span to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Tania Kenny (Toronto, Ont.) scored the first with a wrister from the right point. Junior Randi Dumont (Greene, Maine) put in her own rebound at 16:29, while sophomore Ashley Bairos (Van Nuys, Calif.) tipped in a shot from rookie Kristen Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) for the third power play tally of the period.

Kenny struck again at 4:12 of the second period with a shot from the left point. Bowdoin got on the board with a power play goal at 10:16, as Katherine Pokrass found Katie Coyne for the goal. Middlebury answered just 13 seconds later with a goal from sophomore Jessica Bennett (Surrey, B.C.).

Junior Annmarie Cellino (W. Seneca, N.Y.) converted a shorthanded breakaway early in the third period before senior Lacey Farrell (Greenwich, Conn.) scored on the power play to make it a 7-1 game at the 8:49 mark. Bethany Croskey ended the scoring with some great individual moves as she was breaking in alone.

Sophomore Lani Wright (Reading Mass.) ended the game with 10 saves to earn the win, while Samantha Schwager made 32 stops for Bowdoin.

Middlebury improved its unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1) as the Panthers earned a 4-0 NESCAC win over Colby in Kenyon Arena. Rookie goaltender Lexi Bloom (Highland Park, Ill.) was impressive in goal, making 21 saves to earn her second shutout of the season.

Middlebury opened the scoring at the 13:10 mark as junior Erika Nakamura (Boston, Mass.) scored on a rebound after a shot from junior Molly Vitt (Kenilworth, Ill.) was saved.

Rebecca Julian had a great chance for Colby at the 17-minute mark of the second period, but her backhander from the slot was saved by Bloom. The Panthers made it a 2-0 game with 1:47 left in the second, as senior Karen Levin (Morton Grove, Ill.) scored on the power play from the point.

Middlebury took a 3-0 lead just 41 seconds into the third on a power play tally from Cellino to Dumont. Bloom kept the shutout intact with a big save on Rebecca Julian at 4:30. The Panthers put the game away with 5:42 remaining as first-year player Julia Ireland (Greenwich, Conn.) converted a breakaway on the backhand.

MEN’S HOCKEY EARNS TWO ROAD WINS

The Panther men’s hockey team Middlebury took its first and only lead of the game on a Tom Maldonado (Bronx, N.Y.) goal with 40 seconds left, as the Panthers earned a 4-3 road win at in-state foe Castleton.

Both teams got a number of opportunities in an evenly played first period. The Spartans had two 2-on-1 chances that were turned away by Panther junior goalie Ross Cherry (Basking Ridge, N.J.). The Spartans kept attacking and got on the board first, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play. Travis Martell netted his second goal of the season with a wrist shot to take the 1-0 lead. Middlebury evened the game thanks to first-year player Chaz Svoboda (Verdun, Que.) picking up a loose puck in the Spartan defensive end, and scoring his third goal of the season.

Stuart Stefan made the score 2-1 in favor of the Spartans with a breakaway power play goal less than five minutes into the second period. Middlebury came right back as rookie Michael Kretschmer (Indianapolis, Ind.) flipped the puck up and over Swanson’s right shoulder on a breakaway thanks to an assist from senior Casey Ftorek (Wolfeboro, N.H.) to tie the game at two. Kirk Buldoc scored the second 5-on-3 power play goal for the Spartans to give Castelton a 3-2 advantage. The Panthers found the net on a 5-on-3 power play of their own with Ftorek knocking home the puck that was lying on the crease to end the second tied at three.

The Panthers failed on a five minute major power play prior to Maldonado’s game-winner. Swanson stopped 25 shots for the Spartans, while Cherry made 15 saves for Middlebury in the win.

Middlebury scored four second period goals on the way to a 6-1 win over Skidmore, Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink. The win was the fifth straight for the 12th ranked Panthers who improve to 8-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in ECAC East/NESCAC play. The Thoroughbreds fall to 3-7-2 and 0-6-1.

In a tight first period, Middlebury senior Scott Bartlett (Pittsford, N.Y.) scored the lone goal at 6:25.

The Panthers came out with a pair of quick second period goals. Senior Mickey Gilchrist (Ottawa, Ont.) scored a power-play goal at :47 and junior Mack Cummins (SW Ranches, Fla.) scored at 2:29 to make it 3-0. Gilchrist extended the lead to 4-0 at 13:03 when he forced a turnover in the Skidmore offensive end for his second power-play goal of the period. Junior Ian Drummond (Del Mar, Calif.) made it 5-0 at 17:16.

Skidmore's Joe Melnyk finally solved Middlebury junior goalie Doug Raeder (Needham, Mass.) with a breakaway goal at 11:17 of the third from Ted Gowan. Ftorek closed out the scoring for the Panthers with a power-play goal from Maldonado and Gilchrist at 14:10. It was Maldonado's third assist of the game.

Raeder finished with 19 saves, while Thoroughbred goalie Ted Levine had 26 saves.

MEN’S SQUASH COMPETES AT YALE

The Panther men’s squash team went 1-2 over three matches played at the Yale Round Robin tournament over the weekend. The Panthers opened play with a 7-2 victory over Wesleyan, before falling 8-1 to Franklin & Marshall later that night. Middlebury bounced back the next day with a tough match, falling 5-4 to 11th ranked Amherst.

Junior J.P. Sardi (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and first-year player Brian Cady (Rye, N.Y.) both earned 2-1 marks over the three-match stretch.

WOMEN’S SQUASH IN ACTION AT YALE

The Middlebury College women’s squash returned to action this weekend with three matches at Yale. The Panthers cruised past Wesleyan 9-0, before falling 6-3 to Amherst. Middlebury ended the weekend the next day with a 9-0 loss to fourth-ranked Yale. Junior Caroline Woodworth (Princeton, N.J.), along with sophomores Brooke Beatt (W. Hartford, Conn.) and Lee McKenna (Weybridge, Vt.) ended the weekend with 3-0 marks.

MEN’S BASKETBALL TOPS COLBY-SAWYER

The Panther men's basketball team won its only game of the week as senior Andrew Harris (Waterbury Center, Vt.) and sophomore Tim Edwards (Greenwich, Conn.) netted 20 points apiece to lead Middlebury to a 64-53 win over Colby-Sawyer in Pepin Gym.

A 7-0 spurt in the first half gave the Panthers a 21-12 lead at the 7:03 mark. Colby-Sawyer cut the lead to four before a pair of three’s from Harris gave Middlebury a 31-21 advantage. The Panthers held a 31-26 lead at halftime, as the Chargers shot just 9 of 31 from the floor.

Middlebury held a slim lead during the second half, until the Chargers went on a 7-0 run to take a 49-47 lead on a three-point play from Dave Rosso with 8:01 remaining. The Panthers led by a pair with 4:28 left, when Edwards hit a three and a pair of two’s for a 7-0 run of his own to give Middlebury a 60-51 lead with just 2:39 remaining. The Panthers went 4-4 from the line late to seal the victory.

Aiding the 40 points from Harris and Edwards were junior Kyle Dudley (Scarsdale, N.Y.) with 10 and junior Aaron Smith (W. Hartford, Conn.) with nine points and eight boards. Edwards grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds in the game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYS THREE GAMES

The Middlebury College women’s basketball team had a busy week with three games, two of them on the road. Colby-Sawyer built an early 17-2 advantage in the first half en route to a 61-48 non-conference victory over Middlebury Tuesday evening at Pepin Gym. The Chargers never trailed during the game, as the Panthers shot just over 24 percent from the floor.

Ellen Naughton’s seven points sparked the Chargers’ 17-2 run over the first 9:37 of the half. During that span, Colby-Sawyer held the Panthers to 0-17 shooting from the floor. Middlebury answered with a 16-6 run, led by junior Ashley Barron’s (Brockton, Mass.) eight points, cutting the lead to 25-18 before a last second Colby-Sawyer lay-up capped the first half scoring.

In the second half, the Panthers cut the lead to 30-27 at the 15:55 mark on junior Emily Johnson’s (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) three. The Chargers answered with an 11-3 run, building a 41-30 advantage with 10:45 left in the game. A lay-up by senior Lani Young (Concord, N.H.) trimmed the lead to 52-46 with 2:37 remaining, but Colby-Sawyer finished the game on a 9-2 run to seal the 61-48 victory.

Junior Aylie Baker (Yarmouth, Maine) led the Panthers with 13 points, while Young chipped in 10 and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Middlebury improved to 8-3 overall as the Panthers picked up a 69-35 road win at Southern Vermont. Young paced the team with 15 points, sophomore Kaitlyn Fallon (Swarthmore, Pa.) scored 12, while senior Katie Fisher (Oakland, Calif.) netted 10. Johnson and rookie Allison Needham (Lexington, Mass.) had seven points apiece. Young had a big night on the boards with 11 in the game, as Middlebury shot .475 from the floor.

Rensselaer built a seven point first half lead and held on to defeat Middlebury 62-55 at Robison Gym. The Panthers struggled from the floor, shooting just .306 on the afternoon.

After falling behind, 2-0, the Red Hawks scored the next six points, and never trailed again. Leading by as many as nine points, Rensselaer took a 32-25 lead in halftime.

A pair of Missy Jackman free-throws with 11:31 remaining in the game gave the Red Hawks their largest lead of the game at 49-36.

The Panthers cut the Rensselaer lead to 54-48 with 8:04 to play on a Johnson lay-up. Tory Lyons pushed the Red Hawks advantage to 10 points with just under two minutes to go.

Fisher paced Middlebury with 16 points, while Johnson and Lani Young had 13 points apiece.
