MEN’S LACROSSE WINS TWO

The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team picked up two more wins last week to improve to 11-1 on the season. A win over Tufts in the regular season finale this Saturday would lock up the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament for the Panthers.

Middlebury jumped out to a 6-0 lead and fought off a late surge by Skidmore, winning 8-5 in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday afternoon. It was the first ever men’s lacrosse contest between the two schools, which are separated by less than 90 miles.

Middlebury started their 6-0 run in the first quarter off a feed by junior Mike Stone (Boston, Mass.) to sophomore Pete Smith (Wilton, Conn.) who collected the pass in front of the Skidmore net for the goal at the 11:07 mark. Stone increased the lead later in the quarter cutting in from the left side for a 2-0 advantage. Senior Frank Granara (Norwell, Mass.) capped the first quarter scoring with 2:42 left with another doorstep goal off an assist by junior Tom Petty (Newburyport, Conn.). Junior Matt Ferrer (Darien, Conn.) kept the run going with a goal early in the second quarter before Chris Teves’ (Wellesley, Mass.) driving shot from 10 yards out with 8:19 left in the first half built a 5-0 lead heading into intermission.

Stone finished run with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter driving left from the dodging spot for the six goal advantage. Matt Levesque ended a 38:43 scoring drought for the Thoroughbreds on a man-up goal at the 6:17 mark in the quarter. Levesque tacked on the next two goals for Skidmore, including his third goal of the game with only :02 remaining in the third, cutting the Panther advantage to 6-3 heading into the fourth.

The Thoroughbreds kept the pressure on when Tyler Arnot’s tally cut the lead to 6-4 with 9:35 left to play. Smith answered for Middlebury less than a minute later, with a driving shot that got past Skidmore goalie John Capitani for a three goal lead. With 4:34 left in the game, Cory Barkoff muscled his way deep into the crease, fending off a pair of Panthers and slipped one past Middlebury’s Pete Britt (Summit, N.J.), cutting Middlebury’s lead to 7-5. With 2:13 left in the game, Smith’s third goal gave the Panthers an 8-5 advantage. In the final minute, Britt stopped a shot by Levesque and the Panthers maintained possession as time expired, sealing the win.

Smith led the Panthers with three goals, as Stone netted a pair and assisted on another, while Levesque’s three goals topped the scoring for Skidmore. Britt made 12 saves on the day for Middlebury as Capitani stopped 15 shots for the Thoroughbreds.

Middlebury earned a huge road win on Saturday, as they topped Wesleyan 11-8. Middlebury, ranked seventh nationally, took over sole possession of first place in the NESCAC as the two teams entered the game tied for first at 6-1. The Panthers also remained undefeated on the road this year with an 8-0 mark.

Middlebury gave up the first goal in the game, but scored seven of the next nine for a 7-3 lead early in the third quarter. Middlebury never let the Cardinals get closer than two at 10-8 on a Chris Jasinski goal with 8:13 remaining but a goal by senior Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) off his own rebound with 6:24 to go completed his hat-trick and gave the visitors some breathing room at 11-8. Wesleyan's best opportunity in the last five minutes came when Jasinski hit the pipe.

Middlebury broke a 2-2 tie on a Granara goal in front off a terrific centering pass by Smith, who had three assists in the contest. That was the final goal of the first quarter as the team packed five goals into the opening 5:50 of the game. Middlebury extended its lead to 6-3 at halftime with Cabrera, Stone and Teves getting goals, the last with :03 to go, again with a lightening pass from Smith setting it up.

When Stone opened the third-period scoring at 14:12, Middlebury had a four-goal cushion. Wesleyan fought back from as much as a 10-5 deficit with three consecutive goals by juniors Dan Latzman and Russ Follansbee, as well as Jasinski.

Trailing 7-6 in the seventh and final inning, Amherst rallied as Evan Bruno singled up the middle, as McKillop came on in relief of Wright. A SAC bunt moved Bruno to second before Jose Espinosa was hit by a pitch. One out later, a walk to Brian Merrigan loaded the bases for Brendan Powers, who ripped a two-run single up the middle to give Amherst its first lead of the game.

SOFTBALL WITH ANOTHER BUSY WEEK

The Middlebury College softball team played six games last week, struggling at the plate as they dropped five. Union improved to 16-3 on the season as they took a pair of road games at Middlebury by scores of 5-2 and 12-0 in five innings.

Union pitcher Ginny Sack picked up both wins on the afternoon, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters. Union struck for four runs in the first inning of game one, behind a two-run triple by Catherine Kielb. An RBI double by Lindsay Larabee and a run-scoring single from Bridget Graham later in the inning made it a 4-0 game.

Middlebury answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning, as first-year player Ali McAnaney (Northbrook, Ill.) plated classmates Geena Constantin (Pelham, N.H.) and Megan Margel (Ridgewood, N.J.) with a two-run double.

Union scored the game’s only other run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Kielb. Kaknis went 3-4 to lead Union, while Megan Bordino, Graham and Larabee each had a pair of hits. Margel went 2-3 for the Panthers, while McAnaney had a double.

Union led 4-0 in game two before scoring eight runs on eight hits in the fifth inning to picked up a 12-0 win in the five-inning contest. A two-run double by Alexandra King and a two-run single from Kaknis sparked the inning. First-year player Carlie Crawford (Mount Vernon, Wash.) and McAnaney singled for the Panthers.

Morgan Simpson fired a complete-game five-hitter and Becky Sansone smacked a two-run home run Friday as Williams picked up a 4-1 win over Middlebury.

Simpson carried a shutout into the seventh Friday, losing it on a bases-loaded groundout. Her teammates gave her a 1-0 lead in the first. With two outs, Katie Powers roped a double off the fence in left followed by an RBI single to left by Libby Copeland-Halperin.

Williams added three in the third off Constantin. Joey Lye walked and Sansone followed with a long drive to center field that cleared the fence for a two-run home run. Copeland-Halperin and Simpson followed an out with back-to-back singles, and Taryn Goodman scored the third run with a groundout for a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers threatend to make it a game in the seventh. Margel led off with a single, followed by a single from Constantin. After an out, an error loaded the bases. Junior Amelia Magistrali (Torrington, Conn.) scored a run with a groundout to third, but Lye went into the shortstop hole to field a grounder off the bat of senior Brittany Burke (Medfield, Mass.), and her throw just nipped the runner to end the game.

Constantin took the loss for Middlebury, allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned, over four innings. She walked one and fanned two.

Trailing 2-0 in game one on Saturday, Middlebury got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single to center by Burke, scoring Crawford. The Panthers scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning, taking a 3-2 lead on a SAC fly by Margel.

With two outs in the sixth, Magistrali and rookie Emily Burbridge (E. Greenwich, R.I.) singled, before sophomore Kristin Maletsky (Kinnelon, N.J.) belted a three-run shot to give the Panthers a 6-2 advantage. The homer was the fourth of the season for the sophomore.

Burke went the distance, earning the win over seven innings of work. C. Crawford went 2-4 for the Panthers, while Burbridge was 2-3 with two runs scored.

Trailing 3-0 in game two, the Panthers struck for a pair in the third inning. Maletsky double to right and later scored on a fielder’s choice from C. Crawford, while an RBI ground out by Margel scored rookie Leslie Crawford (Mount Vernon, Wash.).

The Panthers tied the game in the sixth as Burbridge singled through the left side, scoring Margel and knotting the game at three. Williams came back in the bottom of the seventh and scored the game-winner on an RBI double.

McAnaney took the loss for Middlebury, as Burbridge had a pair of hits.

Amherst scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Middlebury on Sunday. Middlebury played a textbook first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead, with the Panthers’ rookie class providing all of the offense. Burbridge led off with a single through the left side before C. Crawford and Margel executed a sacrifice bunt and singled to right field, respectively. After Margel stole second to set up second and third with one out, Constantin doubled to center field for a pair of RBIs.

Constantin was just as effective on the mound in the early going, holding the Jeffs scoreless through three innings. Amherst got its first run in the fourth when Emily Neill led off with a double and was driven in by an RBI-single from Kelly King two batters later to cut the hosts’ deficit in half.

Amherst starting pitcher Alex Chang-Graham settled down after the first inning and got into a rhythm, striking out the side in the top of the third before a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. The Panthers threatened with runners on first and third in the sixth inning and again with runners on base in the seventh, but Chang-Graham got out of her jams.

The pitching duel kept things exciting throughout the game, and it wasn’t until the seventh inning that Amherst was able to tack on its second run. Emily Bularzik singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a passed ball. Jackie Tyler followed up with a single to center field and advanced to second base on the throw in from the outfield, as the Jeffs suddenly had a pair of runners in scoring position.

With runners on second and third, Sam Presnal sent a dribbler back to the mound. Constantin checked Bularzik at third before firing to first, but the throw got away and allowed Amherst to score the tying run, still with only one out in the inning and now with Tyler standing on third. Neckes took over from there and sent a deep fly ball to right center, allowing Tyler to cruise in for the game-winning run.

In addition to going 2-3 at the plate, Chang-Graham picked up her seventh win of the season by allowing just two earned runs on seven hits for the complete-game victory, striking out five and walking none along the way. Constantin struck out three and scattered 10 hits in 6.1 innings and did not walk a batter, as she picked up the loss to move to 3-5 on the year.

Burbridge and Constantin each had two hits for Middlebury.
