MEN’S LACROSSE ADVANCES TO NCAA QUARTERS
The Middlebury College men's lacrosse team Middlebury went on a 5-0 run midway through the game on its way to a 10-7 win over Bowdoin in an NCAA second-round contest on campus. The Panthers advance to the quarterfinal round, where they will travel to Cortland State for a contest on Wednesday. Bowdoin ends its season with a 12-7 record, including 1-1 in NCAA Tournament play in the school’s first appearance. With the victory, the Panthers are now 27-8 in NCAA Tournament action since ’96.
Bowdoin came out strong, taking a 4-1 lead with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter. Adam Tracy scored the game’s first goal as he wrapped around the cage with a high shot. Junior Matt Ferrer (Darien, Conn.), answered for Middlebury as he scored cutting to the goal after a nice feed from sophomore Pete Smith (Wilton, Conn.). Cullen Winkler scored off a pick rolling to his right with 1:36 left in the first quarter to give the Polar Bears a 2-1 lead.
Winkler struck again in the second, before Justin Starr hit a cutting Eric Thompson to make it a 4-1 game. Middlebury bounced back and scored the final three goals of the half, including a pair in 20 seconds, to tie the game at four heading into the intermission. Junior Skyler Hopkins (Easton, Md.) scored the first with a shot from the outside as he cut across the top of the zone. Smith picked up a ground ball and quickly scored with 41 seconds left for the Panthers, before senior Rory Sanborn (Glyndon, Md.) scored a man-up goal with just 21 seconds remaining in the half.
The Panthers continued their five-goal run in the third quarter, as junior Tom Petty (Newburyport, Mass.) and Hopkins scored (man-up) to make it a 6-4 game with 9:23 on the clock. Bowdoin came right back with a pair of goals to tie the game at 6-6 late in the quarter. Harry Ashforth scored the first after he scooped up a ground ball, while Winkler tied the game in transition following a Middlebury turnover. Immediately following Winkler’s goal, Middlebury junior Dave Campbell (Boise, Idaho) won the face-off and carried the ball all the way in to regain the one-goal lead for the Panthers.
Senior Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) beat his man cutting to the goal and converted a nice pass by Smith at the 11:49 mark of the fourth quarter to give Middlebury an 8-6 advantage. Bowdoin’s Adam Tracy picked up a ground ball and quickly found the back of the net for Bowdoin with 7:47 remaining to make it a one-goal game. Just 10 seconds later, Campbell converted once again after winning a face-off and driving to the goal. Petty converted a lengthy pass from Cabrera with 4:16 left to give the Panthers some breathing room at 10-7.
Campbell had a big day for the Panthers, scoring twice while winning 15 of 20 face-offs and a game-high dozen ground balls. Petty and Hopkins also had two goals apiece, while junior James Guay (N. Scituate, R.I.) picked up eight ground balls. Junior Pete Britt (Summit, N.J.) made 14 saves in goal to earn the win.

WOMEN’S GOLF HEADED TO NCAA’S
The Panther women's golf team will make its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Panthers earned an at-large bid and will compete from May 13-16 at the Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa. A year ago, Middlebury finished eighth among 20 teams in their inaugural appearance.

TRACK & FIELD COMPETES AT OPEN
NEW ENGLAND ’S
A dozen members of the Middlebury College track and field teams took part in the Open New England Championships at UNH over the weekend. The meet consisted of Division I, II and III teams throughout New England.
The top performer on the men’s side was senior Jimmy Butcher (Garden City, N.Y.), who earned All-New England honors in the 5,000 with a second place finish in 31:03.
Junior Alexandra Krieg (Wellesley, Mass.) was the top female performer, earning a fifth place finish in the 5,000 with a time of 16:59.16. Placing sixth with a leap of 35’8” in the triple jump was junior Kelley Coughlan (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), while senior Jennifer Currie (Milton, Vt.) was seventh in the hammer (154’9”). Middlebury’s other All-New England performer was senior Ceara Danaher (Simsbury, Conn.), who earned the honor with a time of 11:26 in the 3,000 steeplechase.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE FALLS IN NCAA REGIONAL FINAL
The Panther women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-7 decision at Hamilton in an NCAA regional final match-up. The Panthers end their season with a 12-5 mark and will not appear in the final four for the first time since the NESCAC lifted its ban on NCAA play in ’93-’94, an amazing run of 14 years.
Jen McGowan scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, as #4 Hamilton edged #7 Middlebury. Hilary Saverin and Kate Marek each scored twice for Hamilton (19-1 overall), which advances to the NCAA tournament semifinals for the first time in program history. Kaillie Briscoe scored one goal and assisted on another, while Nicole Tetreault finished with two assists. Kate Fowler made six of her eight saves in the first half.
Both senior Mimi Schatz (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Dana Heritage (Cheshire, Conn.) scored three goals for nationally ranked No. 7 Middlebury (12-5 overall). Schatz added an assist and two draw controls, while senior Katherine Entwisle (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) scored one goal and assisted on another. Senior Reid Berrien (Westport, Conn.) posted game-highs of four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Junior Blair Bowie (Washington, D.C.) made seven saves.
The game was tied, 6-6, after Schatz scored an unassisted goal with 21:22 remaining in the second half. The Continentals responded with three unanswered goals to take the lead for good. Saverin finished off a pass from Briscoe with 21:22 left. McGowan followed with a free-position goal with 12:30 remaining, and Briscoe provided insurance when she put home Tetreault's assist with 9:34 to play.
Schatz's free-position goal with 4:27 left put pressure on Hamilton, but the Continentals tightened up on defense the rest of the way to protect the two-goal lead.
Hamilton scored back-to-back goals to start the game. Liz Rave scored on an assist from Tetreault just 42 seconds into the first half. McGowan scored unassisted only 31 seconds later.
The Panthers answered with three straight goals by Heritage, two on free position shots and one unassisted, to make the score 3-2.
Hamilton scored three straight goals for a 5-3 lead at the break. Marek had two of the goals, and Sarah Bray added her 33rd this season.
Schatz and Entwisle teamed up to score the first two goals of the second half. Schatz converted an Entwisle assist just 47 seconds in, followed by an Entwisle-from-Schatz goal with 26:06 left, and the game was tied. Saverin gave Hamilton a one-goal lead with 24:46 to play before Schatz tied the score again.
Middlebury outscored Gettysburg 8-2 in the second half on its way to a 14-5 win in an NCAA Regional match-up at Hamilton.
Junior Lindsay McBride (Old Greenwich, Conn.) came off the bench to score four goals and add one assist to help boost the Panther offense, while Entwisle scored three goals for Middlebury (12-4 overall). Schatz and rookie Chase Delano (Greenwich, Conn.) each scored two goals and added two assists. First-year player Sally Ryan (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored two goals with an assist, while collecting three draw controls. Berrien posted a game-high four draw controls, while junior Taryn Petrelli (Harrison, N.Y.) scooped up three ground balls, collected two draw controls and caused two turnovers. Bowie made four of her five saves in the first half and picked up a total of five ground balls.
Middlebury opened the scoring with two consecutive goals early in the first half. Schatz scored exactly three minutes into the game on Ryan's assist. McBride found the back of the net just 1:21 later with an unassisted goal.
Gettysburg responded with a pair of goals of its own. Browning scored off a Ceglarski assist with 22:42 remaining in the first half, followed by an unassisted goal by Moore with 15:33 left.
The Panthers answered with four straight goals for a 6-2 lead. Rookie Hilary Walker (Denver, Colo.) started the rally on a goal with 12:58 to play in the half. Ryan finished it on a goal with 1:39 left.
The Bullets made it 6-3 with just 52 seconds remaining in the half when Hollis Stahl finished off a Ceglarski assist. Gettysburg cut its deficit to two on a goal by Browning to open the second half, but the Bullets did not come any closer. Middlebury scored the next eight goals to put the game away.
Earlier in the week, Middlebury jumped out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back, on its way to a 19-3 win over Ithaca in an NCAA Tournament first-round game on Kohn Field. Middlebury wasted little time as Berrien scored cutting to the goal with a nice feed from Schatz just 31 seconds into the game. Heritage scored a pair for the Panthers, followed by Berrien’s second goal at the 25:42 mark. Schatz struck for two of her own to give Middlebury a 6-0 advantage. Three more tallies made it a 9-0 contest, before Heritage scored her third and fourth goals of the half to give the Panthers an 11-0 lead with 11:53 remaining.
Catherine Hurley broke up the scoring run as she put Ithaca on the board with 9:24 left in the first half. Entwisle scored twice, with a Schatz goal sandwiched in between, to make it a 14-1 game at the intermission.
Middlebury slowed down the pace in the second half, opening with the first five goals over a 17:35 span. The final goal of the run was the first of her career for junior Alice Demmerle (Greenwich, Conn.). Ithaca closed the game with a pair of goals, one from Meagan Howell and the second of the game for Hurley to make it a 19-3 final.
Schatz paced the Panthers with three goals and three assists, while Heritage scored four with one helper. Berrien scored four, Entwisle earned three goals and two assists, while rookie Taylor Brown (Englewood, Colo.) dished out three assists in the win.
Bowie made six saves in 46 minutes to earn the win for Middlebury in goal, while Emily Brooks made three stops over 52 minutes of play for the Bombers.
