• WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY PLACES FOURTH AT NCAA’s - SCHMIDT COMPETES

  The Middlebury College women's cross country team turned in an impressive fourth place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championship hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College at the Highland Park Golf Course in Cleveland, Ohio. The five-time NCAA Champs trailed only Wisconsin-Eau Claire, St. Lawrence and Calvin in the 32-team race. Middlebury’s squad was comprised of two rookies, two sophomores, two juniors and one senior.

• WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS IN NCAA SECTIONALS

  The Panther women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss at Johns Hopkins in an NCAA Sectional match-up. The Panthers end their season with a 14-4-2 mark, a trip to the NECAC finals and a pair of NCAA Tournament wins.

• MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS WITH TWO WINS

  The Middlebury College men’s basketball team left Pennsylvania as the only undefeated team at the Equinox Classic, earning a 55-42 win over Haverford on day two of the tourney. First-year player Nolan Thompson (Akron, Ohio) and junior Jamal Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each earned All-Tournament team honors for the 2-0 Panthers.

• WOMEN’S HOCKEY OPENS WITH TWO WINS IN KENYON

  
  

  Anna McNally scored four goals last week.

  The Panther women’s hockey team opened up their season with a 3-1 win over Connecticut College in the Kenyon Arena. The Panthers used a pair of goals from junior Anna McNally (St. Paul, Minn.), as they held a 37-13 shots advantage in the game.

• MEN’S HOCKEY OPENS SEASON UNBEATEN

  
  

  Mathieu Dubus scored three goals in two games.

  The Middlebury College men’s hockey team opened up its season with a 3-3 tie on the road at Tufts. After a scoreless first period, the Jumbos scored twice in the second period and led 2-0 heading into the third. Middlebury stormed back to take a 3-2 lead with a trio of goals 4:23 apart. Tufts, already on a power-play, pulled goaltender Scott Barchard with 1:10 remaining in the third. With heavy pressure on the doorstep of the Middlebury net, Trevor John scored his first collegiate goal with assists from juniors Tom Derosa and Andy Davis. Neither team scored in the overtime period.

• SWIM TEAMS HOST A PAIR OF MEETS

  
  

  Yu Wang won four events last weekend.

  The Panther swim teams opened up their 2009-10 season by hosting Tufts and Connecticut College on campus. The men fell to Conn. 156-115, while ending up on the short end of a 207-89 contest with Tufts. The Panther women topped Conn. 176-111, while defeating Tufts 176-123. The following day, the Springfield men edged Middlebury 143.5-135.5, while the Middlebury women were 149.5-132.5 winners.

• SQUASH TEAMS OPEN SEASON

  The Middlebury College squash teams began the ’09-’10 season with a pair of matches played at Williams. The Panther women fell to Williams 9-0 before defeating Tufts by the same score later in the day. The men’s squad lost to Williams by the same score, earning a 6-3 victory over Tufts later in the day.

• WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COMPETES IN SWARTHMORE TOURNEY

  The Panther women’s basketball team dropped its season-opener as they fell 59-42 to Haverford at the Swarthmore Tournament. Middlebury struggled from the floor in the game, shooting just .246, while Haverford hit .444 of its shots in the first half. The Panthers trailed 33-20 at the break, cutting the lead to 10 on a hoop from senior Alana Wall (Honolulu, Hawaii) with 14:59 left to play. Haverford answered with a 12-2 run to regain a 20-point lead, but the Panthers hung tough, cutting the margin to a dozen with 6:06 remaining.
