Baseball Team Tops Castleton

5/4/05 - Middlebury out-hit Castleton 13-4, coming away with a 5-3 win over the Spartans on Forbes Field. Ryan Armstrong went 3-4 with two RBI for Middlebury, improving his NESCAC leading batting average to an even .500 on the season.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single to left by Joe Ramoin, plating Armstrong. The lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth inning as the Panthers struck for three runs. Andrew Pavoni led off the inning with a double down the right field line, followed by a single to right by Liam Quinn. Noah Walker then smacked a two-run double to right, scoring both runners to make it a 3-0 game. An RBI groundout by Armstrong gave the Panthers a 4-0 advantage after four innings.

Castleton got on the board in the fifth as an infield single by Adam Massey scored Mike Phelps. An RBI groundout by Josh Racicot later in the inning scored Chris Gissel to cut the lead in half. The game stayed at 4-2 until the eighth, when each team scored a run. The Spartans run came on a double steal as Chad Phillips stole second, while Massey swiped home. The Panthers answered in the eighth with an RBI single through the right side by Armstrong, scoring Dave Riester.

Dave Irwin picked up the win for Middlebury, tossing four innings of one-hit ball. Riester threw a pair of innings to earn the save. Rhyan Paquette rook the loss for Castleton, despit allowing just one run over three innings.
