Baseball Tops Wesleyan, Earns First NESCAC Tourney Bid

Middlebury defeated Wesleyan 3-0, earning the Panthers their first-ever trip to the NESCAC Tournament next weekend at Bowdoin as the number one seed in the NESCAC West. Middlebury also set a school record with their 21st win of the season.

Sophomore Jack Britton threw a nine inning complete game shutout to blank the Cardinals on the afternoon. The righty allowed seven hits on the day, while striking out seven batters to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The game was scoreless entering the top of the eighth inning when Middlebury struck for a pair of runs. Nick Lefeber singled up the middle to lead off the inning before John Lanahan walked. Ryan Armstrong reached on a fielding error, allowing Lefeber to score. Two outs later, Alex Casnocha singled to left, plating Lanahan. The Panthers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Lanahan homered to left with two outs.

Broughton ended the game 3-5 with a double, while Casnocha and Armstrong each went 2-4. In all, seven different players had hits for Middlebury.

Middlebury wraps up the regular season with a doubleheader at Bowdoin on Saturday, before return to Brunswick, Maine next weekend for the NESCAC Tourney.
