Baseball Team Sweeps Wesleyan

After a rainout on Saturday, Middlebury picked up a two-game sweep at Wesleyan on Sunday to move to 4-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers will have to return to Wesleyan later in the season to make up the one remaining game.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one as a fielder's choice by John Lanahan drove in Joe Ramoin for the first run. Noah Walker scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Middlebury added three runs in the fourth inning as Lanahan scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a double. Alex Casnocha singled in Nick Lefeber later in the inning, before Gabe Broughton drove in Dom DiDomenico with an RBI single to right. Wesleyan broke up the shutout with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-1 final.

Justin Wright allowed seven hits over seven innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. Ramoin, Lefeber and Casnocha each had two hits for Middlebury.

Wesleyan led 1-0 in game two before a SAC fly by Andrew Pavoni tied the game in the second. An RBI double by Casnocha scored Lefeber in the fourth to give Middlebury a 2-1 lead. Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, with neither team scoring in the eighth or ninth, forcing the game into extra innings.

The Panthers blew the game wide open in the top of the 11th as they struck for six runs on six hits. Three RBI singles plated three runs, an error scored the fourth, before Lanahan drove in a pair with an RBI double.

Jack Britton threw seven and a third innings, allowing two runs, neither earned, while striking out seven. Matt Joseph earned the win in relief, throwing three and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball. Lefeber went 3-4, improving his average to .550 on the season, while Casnocha had a 3-6 game. Broughton and Walker each had a pair of hits.
