Baseball Wins Home-Opener

The Middlebury College baseball team defeated Plymouth State for the second straight season in the team's home-opener, as the Panthers picked up a 6-3 victory. Middlebury returns to action on Thursday at St. Michael's, while Plymouth State plays Rivier in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer to left by John Pogorzelski. Middlebury took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by Nick Lefeber and an RBI single to right by Gabe Broughton.

Plymouth's Kevin Levandowski singled in Grant Livington to tie the game at two in the top of the third inning.

Middlebury opened the game up a bit in the fourth, with four runs on just a pair of hits. Gabe Broughton had a two-run single to spark the inning, plating Andrew Matson and Erich Enns.

Plymouth added a run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Jack Britton earned the save with two innings of scoreless work. Steve Shortle picked up the win for the Panthers, allowing two runs over four innings. John Lanahan had a 3-4 day with a double and triple, Broughton ended the game 2-5 with three RBI, while Donald McKillop had a pair of hits.

John Andersch took the loss for Plymouth, allowing six runs, three earned, over three innings of work. Levandowski was the only player with multiple hits, earning a pair on the afternoon.
