Baseball Tops Plymouth

Middlebury scored four in the second and six in the third on its way to a 12-9 win over Plymouth State (19-19) on Forbes Field. The Panthers (10-17) return to action on Saturday at Bowdoin before hosting Tufts on Sunday. Plymouth will host RIC on Friday in a pair of Little East games.
Plymouth State took a 3-0 lead in the first, sparked by a two-run single to right by Dave Hall. Middlebury plated a run in the bottom of the inning before Plymouth added three more runs in the second. A two-run triple to left center by Ryan McIntosh was the key hit in the inning.
Middlebury answered in the bottom of the stanza with four unearned runs on three Panther errors. Tom Rafferty drove in a pair with a single to left.
Plymouth added a run in the third to take a 7-5 lead before the Panthers of Middlebury struck for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third. A two-run single to left by Tom Driscoll drove in two of Middlebury’s runs as they took an 11-7 lead. The first three innings were lengthy, taking 1:37 to play.
Plymouth chipped away in the sixth, scoring a pair including an RBI triple to left center by Brandon Cox. Middlebury added to its cushion in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to right by Hunter Merryman, making it a 12-9 game.
Sawyer Olson picked up his first career win, allowing one run and three hits over 3.1 innings of work. Joe MacDonald closed out the game in the ninth to earn the first save of his career. Michael Welch (2-1) took the loss, giving up eight runs (four earned ) and seven hits over two innings of work. Zach Cogswell threw 4.1 innings of effective relief for Plymouth, allowing a run a four hits.
John Luke went 3-4 to pace Middlebury, while Driscoll finished the game 3-5 with a double and three RBI. Alex Kelly, Kyle Finck and Steven Bodine each had two hits in the game, while Merryman and Rafferty each drove in a pair.
Hall finished 2-5 with three RBI for Plymouth, while Brian Thompson and Jeff Runnals each had a pair of hits.
