Williams Takes Both Ends of Baseball Twinbill, Sweeps Three-Game Series

Williams completed a three-game sweep of Middlebury with 4-2 and 20-2 wins on Saturday in a NESCAC West doubleheader played in Tucson, Arizona. The Panthers (2-8, 0-3) hope to return to action on Wednesday when they are scheduled to host Plattsburgh.

In game one, each team scored twice in the first inning with the Ephs (6-3, 3-0) using solo runs in the second and fifth en route to the 4-2 win.

Trailing 2-0 after three outs, an error allowed Middlebury's Alex Kelly to reach before Max Araya singled to left. The two were sacrificed to second and third by John Luke, before Kelly scored on a groundout by Jason Lock. Joe MacDonald followed with a single to left to score Araya and knot the game at 2-2.

Thomas Stephens tripled and later scored on a single to left by Kelso Stevens giving Williams a 3-2 lead in the second inning. The Ephs added a run in the fifth on a single to center by Luke Pierce, driving in Mike Kastner, who reach on an error.

Cooper Byrne (1-1) went the distance for Middlebury, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Araya went 2-3 at the dish, while Lock and MacDonald each had a hit and an RBI.

The Panther pitching struggled in game two, giving up 20 runs on 23 hits in a 20-2 defeat. Williams struck for six runs in the third and four in the sixth in its victory.

Middlebury’s first run came in the fifth, as Kelly singled and Araya followed with a walk. Luke singled to center driving in Kelly, making the score 10-1.

The Panthers scored again in the eighth, when Lukas Marble singled to right and later scored when Kelly drove him in with a base knock to center.

Dylan Kane (0-1) suffered the loss for Middlebury, surrendering nine hits and seven earned runs over 2.1 innings of work. Alex Kelly went 2-3 in the game, while Luke was 2-5.
