Baseball Falls to Wesleyan in Game One of NESCAC West Series

Johnny Read went 2-4 at the plate in his first collegiate game, but Middlebury fell to Wesleyan by a 7-1 count Friday during NESCAC West baseball action. The teams will complete their three-game series Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at noon.
Middlebury (2-9, 0-4) took the lead in the second inning via an RBI groundout by Ryan Rizzo, scoring Read who singled through the right side earlier in the inning. Wesleyan tied the game in the home half of the third on a throwing error with two outs and a runner at third base.
Wesleyan (12-5, 1-0) took the lead for good in the 4th inning. Robby Harbison hit a squibber to shortstop with the bases loaded to drive in a run on the groundout. Wesleyan took the lead for good in the third with thanks to a Middlebury throwing error. The Cardinals tacked on two in the fourth and added three more in the fifth with a single, a sacrifice fly and a Panther outfield error. Wesleyan tacked on another in the eighth for the final 7-1 score.
At the plate, Wesleyan pounded out 12 hits with four different players having two hits apiece. Guy Davidson went 2-5 with a pair of runs, while Andrew Yin and Donnie Cimino were each 2-5 and both touched home plate once. Eric Jones also collected two hits in three at-bats.
Read posted a 2-4 game at the dish for the Panthers, while John Luke recorded his fifth double of the season in the sixth.
Eric Truss (0-3) took the loss for the Panthers. He allowed six runs, four earned, on 10 hits in 7.0 innings. Eddie DeArias hurled the eighth inning for Middlebury giving up an unearned run on two hits.
Nick Cooney (2-1) scattered six hits and one run over 7.1 innings on the mound with five strikeouts for the win. Sam Elias pitched the final 1.2 innings giving up one hit and striking out three.
