Baseball Tops Hamilton, Takes NESCAC West Series

April 13, 2014

Middlebury defeated Hamilton 10-3 on Sunday in the rubber game of a NESCAC West series at Royce Field. The Panthers (4-12, 2-7 NESCAC West) scored the game’s first 10 runs. Middlebury’s Logan Mobley held the Continentals (8-9, 1-4 NESCAC West) to one hit over five shutout innings and the Panthers took advantage of five Hamilton errors and five wild pitches.

Mobley (1-1) struck out three and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth when Ryan Wolfsberg singled with one out. Mobley allowed four base runners that inning (walking one batter and hitting two), but kept the Continentals off the scoreboard by picking a runner off first base. He then induced a ground ball with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Alex Kelly and Jason Lock both collected three of Middlebury’s 17 hits. Kelly scored three runs. Joe MacDonald drove in three runs and hit his second home run in as many days.

Kelly singled in Garrett Werner in the second for Middlebury’s first run, then came around to score on a wild pitch. Werner scored on another wild pitch in the third, then Matt Leach highlighted the Panthers’ four-run third. MacDonald drove in a run with an infield grounder and Werner walked with the bases loaded.

The Panthers went up 7-0 on MacDonald’s fifth-inning sacrifice fly and closed out their scoring with two runs in the seventh, including MacDonald’s solo home run to left field.

Hamilton got on the board in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Kenny Collins. Joe Jensen singled to left center with one out and moved to second on an infield grounder before coming around to score. Tim Burke singled with runners on second and third in the eighth, with Brett Mele and Brian Ferrell scoring on the play.

Dylan Kane picked up his first save of the season, pitching four innings of four-hit relief.

Hamilton is scheduled to face SUNY Canton Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a non-league game at DeLutis Field in Rome. The Panthers will host Plattsburgh on Wednesday.
