Women's Cross Country Wins NCAA Regional

11/13/04 - The defending national champion Middlebury College Panthers, led by senior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.), edged out conference rival Williams College by six points to win the 2004 NCAA Division III New England Regional Women's Cross Country Championship held Saturday at the Twin Brook Recreation Complex in Cumberland, Maine.

The Panthers placed five runners among the first 23 finishers for a total of 58 points. Williams had its five runners among the first 28 finishers for 64 points. Colby College, with 131 points, was third followed by Amherst College with 160 points and Wesleyan University with 163 points. All five teams earned a trip to next weekend's NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship race in Eau Claire, Wis.

Manzer covered the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:34.5 to finish seven seconds behind three-time race winner Caroline Cretti (Carbondale, Col.), a junior from Williams College who posted a time of 21:27.4.

Senior Marisa Cawley (Bennington, N.H.) was the second Middlebury runner to finish, coming home in fourth place with a time of 21:46.2. Other Middlebury finishers in the top 23 were sophomore Andrea Giddings (South Portland, Maine) in 11th place with her time of 22:18.7, junior Kelsey Rinehart (Moorestown, N.J.) in 18th place with a time of 22:46.2 and sophomore Makely Lyon (Portland, Ore.) in 23rd place with a time of 22:56.0.

Following Cretti and Manzer in third place was Williams senior Jenn Campbell (Easthampton, Mass.) with a time of 21:43.4.

Four individuals also earned spots in next weekend's national championship field. Going to Eau Claire next weekend are freshman Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, Mass.) of Wheaton College who placed eighth, junior Tracy Bassett (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) who finished ninth, Trinity University sophomore Kristina Miner (Suffield, Conn.) of who was 12th, and junior Becca Ades (Shelburne,Vt.) of Tufts University who came home in 13th place.
