Women's Cross Country Heads To NCAA's - As Does Butcher

November 14, 2006

The Middlebury College women's cross country team will look for its fourth NCAA Championship this weekend when they travel to Chester, Ohio for the 2006 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. Wilmington College will be the host school with the races taking place at the Voice of America Park on November 18th.

Middlebury will be making its 10th consecutive and 11th overall appearance in the NCAA Championship race. The Panthers won NCAA titles in '00, '01 and '03, finishing second in '99, '02 and '04. The Panthers earned their right to compete with an impressive win at the NCAA Regional Championship race at Springfield College last Saturday. Middlebury enters the weekend ranked second in the latest national poll.

Competing for the women will be a senior-led group comprised of Andrea Giddings, Erin Archard, Makely Lyon, Claire Schultz and Devyn Young. Sophomore Alexandra Krieg and first-year racer Anne Sullivan round out the squad, while sophomore Emily Jacobs will serve as the alternate racer.

On the men's side, Jimmy Butcher will compete for the NCAA individual title. The junior had another great season, finishing fifth out of 300 runners at the NCAA Regional. With his performance, he was the top-ranked individual selected that hadn't qualified as a member of a team. Butcher won both the Panther Invitational and the State Championship meet in '06.
