All-NESCAC XCountry Announced - Schmidt Is Performer Of The Year

November 2, 2011

The NESCAC has released its 2011 All-Conference cross country selections, based on individual’s finishes at the recent NESCAC Championship races. Middlebury senior Michael Schmidt (Wilmette, Ill.) was named the men’s most outstanding performer after capturing the NESCAC crown a week ago. The Middlebury men finished the race fourth overall, while the women came in second place.

After placing second last fall, Schmidt became only the second Panther to ever win the NESCAC meet as he joined former Middlebury runner Mike Graham, who finished first at the 1983 championship which was also held at Amherst. Schmidt traversed a significant amount of the wet 8-kilometer course with only one shoe, as his time of 25:51 was a full 20 seconds better than the next runner to cross the finish line. In addition to being named Most Outstanding Performer, Schmidt garnered All-NESCAC recognition for the fourth consecutive year with his third-straight first-team honor.

Also being honored for the men was junior Jack Davies (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), who finished the race in 12th place for second-team All-NESCAC honors.

Representing runner-up Middlebury on the first-team were senior Margo Cramer (Seattle, Wash.) and junior Addie Tousley (Kensington, Md.). Tousley came in third with a time of 22:44 and Cramer was not far behind, finishing fourth in 22:56. Earning second-team honors for the women were senior Chelsea Ward-Waller (Washington, D.C.) in 10th, sophomore Emily Singer (Harrison, N.Y.) in 11th and sophomore Emily Attwood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in 14th place.
