Panthers Fall In NCAA Title Game

November 22, 2003

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Middlebury College field hockey team saw its perfect season come to an end as they fell 4-1 to Salisbury in the NCAA Championship game. The four goals are the most Middlebury has given up in a game this season, having only given up three goals once.

The Sea Gulls never trailed after Tracey Lloyd scored 5:22 into the game. Lloyd carried the ball in from outside the left part of the circle and fired a shot high into the net for her 10th goal of the season. Six minutes later, junior Erin Budd found Elliott waiting unmarked in the front of the cage with a perfect cross from the left wing. Elliott slammed the ball into a wide-open net for her 17th goal of the season to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 edge. Middlebury cut the deficit in half with 18:39 left in the opening stanza. Ashley Pullen rebounded a shot off the goalie's pads, and pushed the ball out to Char Glessner, who rifled in a shot from into the upper left corner of the net from 15 yards out for her 20th goal of the season. Salisbury made it 3-1 when Elliott scored 6:29 into the second half. Budd started the score with a free hit from the left side. Elliott accepted the offering from 10 yards out and stroked in her second goal of the game and 18th of the season. The Sea Gulls scored their final goal with 23:05 left, as senior Lindsey Elliott took a short pass from freshman Abbey Rowe on the right wing and shoveled in her 18th tally of the season. Salisbury outshot Middlebury 18-10 and held a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners. Middlebury goalie Meghan McGillen collected a season-high 12 saves in a losing effort.
