Field Hockey Falls In NCAA Title Game

11/20/04 - Middlebury saw its hopes of a national championship come to an end as they fell to Salisbury, 6-3 on the campus of Westfield State College. The Panthers end their second straight season with a loss to the Sea Gulls in the NCAA title game. The two teams combined to set an NCAA Tournament record for goals in a game with nine.
Salisbury opened the scoring at 24:50 as Danielle Twilley sent a ball down low from the left side to Abby Rowe. Rowe gathered the ball and stuffed a shot just inside the left post. The Sea Gulls scored their second goal in 55 seconds when Melissa Webster's shot was deflected high into the cage off a defender. Salisbury took a 3-0 lead when Brittany Elliott scored with a low hard shot from 15 feet away. Middlebury got on the board at 15:24 as Allison Smith's shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner, was tipped in by Ashley Pullen. Salisbury came right back just 1:08 later as Erin Budd gave the Sea Gulls a 4-1 lead with a shot from the outside on a penalty corner.
Middlebury came out strong in the second half with some pressure early on. Despite the pressure, Salisbury took a 5-1 lead at 18:57 as Powell put home her own rebound from the left post. The Panthers cut it to 5-2 at 14:43 when Reid Berrien's shot from the right side slid between the legs of the Salisbury goalkeeper. Middlebury kept coming as Claire Edelen scored from close range after a series of saves at the 10:46 mark to make it 5-3. Powell ended the momentum and sealed the game for Salisbury as her slow shot from the right trickled through the defense and into the back of the cage with 4:31 remaining.
Meghan McGillen made five saves in goal for the Panthers, while Maria Ramoundos stopped nine for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury out shot Middlebury 16-12 in the game. Ashley Lyddane, Janie Mackey and Allison Smith were each named to the All-Tournament team.
