Field Hockey Wins In OT At Bowdoin

October 3, 2004

10/3/04 - Middlebury senior captain Lauren Nicasio scored in overtime to lift the Panther field hockey team to a 2-1 win at Bowdoin on Sunday. The Panthers improve to 7-0 on the year with the victory, while the Polar Bears drop to 4-3.

In a game that featured outstanding goalkeeping on both ends, the Panthers broke the ice first with a goal at 19:58. Claire Edelen found an open Ashley Hall for a backdoor goal and a 1-0 Middlebury lead. Bowdoin would even things up later in the half when Taryn King passed the ball to Colleen McDonald, who found the back of the net to deadlock the game at one apiece.

Although no scoring occurred in the second period, the teams traded great opportunities as the Panthers were awarded seven penalty corners and the Polar Bears six. The goalies were active as Leonard swept aside eight Panther shots in the second frame, while Middlebury goalkeeper Meg McGillen made seven saves in the second half alone.

In the first overtime, just minutes after Leonard made a sprawling save to keep the contest alive, Weymouth dealt a pass to Nicasio on the right side of the circle. Nicasio fired a shot that bounced between the leg pads of Leonard for the game-winner with 1:56 remaining in overtime.

Leonard made 17 saves in net for Bowdoin, while McGillen stopped 15 for Middlebury.
