Field Hockey Prepares For NCAA Regional

11/10/05 - The Middlebury College field hockey will take part in an NCAA Regional this weekend at <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Bowdoin College. The host school will meet The College of New Jersey on Saturday, November 12th at 11:00 a.m., while the Panthers will battle Springfield (20-2) at 2:00 p.m. The regional final will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Middlebury is making its third consecutive and sixth overall appearance in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The Panthers advanced to the regional after a 5-1 win over Manhattanville in a first-round game on Wednesday. Nina Daugherty had a pair of goals in the game, while Janie Mackey and Channing Weymouth each had a goal and an assist. Meghan McGillen made three saves in goal as Middlebury out shot the Valiants, 32-5.

Middlebury enters the 2005 tournament with a 13-5 record in NCAA play since the team's first appearance in '94. Middlebury has hosted and won an NCAA Regional in each of the past two seasons, advancing to the NCAA Championship game. The Panthers earned an at-large bid to the tourney after falling in the NESCAC semifinals last weekend.

Middlebury enters the weekend with a 14-3 record, ranked 10th in the latest (11/8) Division III national poll. The Panther offense averages 2.87oals/game, while the stingy defense has allowed just 1.03 goals/contest in '05. Middlebury had won its last eight games prior to a 1-0 overtime loss to Williams in the NESCAC semifinals.

Reid Berrien paces the team in scoring with 15 goals in 17games, to go along with three assists for 33 points. Weymouth is the team's leader in assists with 11 while scoring five goals on the year. Allison Smith (5-6-16), Nina Daugherty (7-1-15) and Claire Edelen (2-5-9) round out the other leading scorers. In goal, Meghan McGillen has a 1.02 goals against average with a pair of shutouts on the season.
