Field Hockey To Host NCAA Tournment Game

11/7/05 - The Middlebury College field hockey team will makes its third consecutive and sixth overall appearance in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship when they host Manhattanville in a first-round match-up Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. on Kohn Field.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The Panthers enter the 2005 tournament with a 12-5 record in NCAA play since the team's first appearance in '94. Middlebury has hosted and won an NCAA Regional in each of the past two seasons, advancing to the NCAA Championship game. The Panthers earned an at-large bid to the tourney after falling in the NESCAC semifinals last weekend.

Middlebury enters the tournament with a 13-3 record, ranked eighth in the latest (10/31) Division III national poll. The Panther offense averages 2.74 goals/game, while the stingy defense has allowed just 1.03 goals/contest in '05. Middlebury had won its last eight games prior to a 1-0 overtime loss to Williams in the NESCAC semifinals.

Reid Berrien paces the team in scoring with 15 goals in 16 games, to go along with three assists for 33 points. Channing Weymouth is the team's leader in assists with 10, while scoring four goals on the year. Allison Smith (5-5-15), Nina Daugherty (5-1-11) and Claire Edelen (2-5-9) round out the other leading scorers. In goal, Meghan McGillen has a 1.01 goals against average with a pair of shutouts on the season.

Manhanttanville will be making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, earning an automatic bid after capturing the Freedom Conference championship with a 2-1 win over King's. The Valiants have won six straight games entering the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Ali Van Horn (5-8-18), Alissa Tyghter (6-5-17) and Dionne Jones (5-4-14) lead the team in scoring on the season, while Danielle Lacroix has eight assists. Lauren Gagnon has played all but seven minutes in goal, sporting a 1.37 GAA with five shutouts.
