Field Hockey Headed To NCAA Regional

The Middlebury College field hockey team will take part in one of four, four-team regionals this weekend. The Panthers will travel to The College of New Jersey, where they will take on Messiah at 2:00 on Saturday. The host school meets William Smith in the other match-up at 11:00 a.m. The winners meet in the regional final for a trip to the final four on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Middlebury is making its fifth consecutive and eighth overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers enter the weekend with an overall record of 13-7 in NCAA Tournament play. Middlebury hosted and won NCAA Regionals in '03 and '04, advancing to the NCAA Championship game in both of those seasons. The Panthers have fallen in an NCAA Regional match-up at Bowdoin in each of the last two seasons. Middlebury won the NCAA title in '98, finishing with a 17-1 mark.

Middlebury earned its way into the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid after advancing to the NESCAC Championship game. The Panthers made quick work of UMaine-Farmington in the first round on Wednesday, earning a 5-1 win as they outshot their opponent 40-4. Head coach Katharine DeLorenzo is now in her sixth year as the team's leader, owning a record of 99-26 (.792) at Middlebury entering the weekend. The Panthers are ranked 10th in the latest Division III National poll.

The Middlebury offense is ranked second in the NESCAC this season with 3.66 goals/game, while the defense is fourth with 1.44 goals allowed/contest. Junior keeper Caitlin Pentifallo has played all 1,261 minutes this season, owning a 1.44 GAA with four shutouts on the year.

Leading the team in scoring this season has been senior Reid Berrien. The co-captain is second in the league with 2.55 points/game, while leading Middlebury with 20 goals and 46 points to go along with her six assists. Sophomore Heather McCormack (11-6-28) and senior Lacey Farrell (4-7-15) are next in scoring, followed by sophomore Madeleine Macmillan (6-2-14) and senior Marnie Rowe (6-1-13).

Defensively, junior Taryn Petrelli, senior Katherine Entwisle and sophomore Dana Heritage have been steady.
