Field Hockey Opens Season

September 6, 2008

The Middlebury field hockey team scored five first half goals on its way to a 6-2 victory over St. Lawrence in the team's season-opener on Kohn Field. The Panthers return to action with a contest at Skidmore on Wednesday.

Heather McCormack opened the scoring on a rebound after an outside shot from Lindsay McBride was saved by Emillie Lannamann. The Saints answered with a shot from the perimeter by Michelle Verrochi to tie the game at one with 22:13 remaining in the first half. The Panthers closed the half with four unanswered tallies to take a 5-1 lead into the intermission.

Chase Delano scored twice during the run, before McCormack netted her second of the game with some nice work down low. Rookie Emily Blair netted the first of her career with 6:51 left in the half, converting a nice pass from Delano.

After almost 20 minutes of scoreless action in the second half, Delano scored with a blast from the outside to make it a 6-1 contest. Bristol, Vermont native Jennifer Stetson scored the game's final goal for the Saints with 12:30 left to play.

Middlebury outshot its opponents 19-6 on the day, as Caitlin Pentifallo made three saves in goal to earn the win. Lannamann made 10 stops in 70 minutes for St. Lawrence.
