Field Hockey Falls In NESCAC Quarters
November 1, 2009
A late goal from Williams lifted the Ephs to a 2-1 upset victory in a NESCAC Quarterfinal game on Kohn Field. The Panthers, who defeated Williams 7-1 on Friday, see their record fall to 11-4 on the year. The Ephs advance to the NESCAC semifinals where they will meet Tufts at Trinity on Saturday.
Williams struck early, taking a 1-0 lead just 1:50 into the game as Alice Bearn finished off a scramble in front of the Panther net. Middlebury bounced back to tie the game at the 12:37 mark as Chase Delano scored on a rebound after a shot from Lauren Greer had been saved by Katrina Tulla.
The game remained at 1-1 heading into the halftime break, despite the Panthers closing the first half with three consecutive penalty corners.
Both teams battled in the second half, with neither able to take command of the game. The Panthers threatened in the 61st minute, as Tulla denied a nice backhanded shot by Greer. Middlebury kept up the pressure over the next minute, with Greer seeing a quick turn-and-shoot shot go just wide. The Ephs took possession and called a timeout with 7:26 remaining.
Williams came at Middlebury strong in the final five minutes of the game, turning up the pressure with four straight penalty corners. On the fourth corner, the initial high shot from Meera Silvalingam was saved by Becca Shaw, with Lindsay Davies gathering the rebound. Davies quickly fired a shot across the goal that Shaw got a piece of before it just crossed the goal line with 5:14 left to play.
Middlebury pulled Shaw with 2:00 left to play in favor of an extra attacker, earning three penalty corners in the game's final minutes. Greer's tip of a Mullery Doar shot went wide on the first attempt, while Greer saw her blast just miss the post on the second penalty corner. The Panthers were unable to get a shot off on the third corner as time expired and the Ephs came away with the win.
Tulla ended the game with six saves in goal for Williams, while Shaw made six stops for the Panthers.
