Field Hockey Tops Cabrini In NCAA Play
November 10, 2010
Middlebury had little trouble with Cabrini, advancing to the NCAA Regionals with a 6-0 NCAA first-round victory on Kohn Field. The Panthers (12-4) will take on Tufts at Ursinus on Saturday at 2:00, while Juniata meets the host school in the other regional match-up at 11:00. The regional final is scheduled for 1:00 on Sunday. The Cavaliers, who were making their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, finish the season at 12-8.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead just 3:48 into the game, as Lauren Greer scored on a screened shot, with an assist to Liz Garry. Greer struck again for her team-leading 19th of the year at 10:11, working a nice give-and-go play with Charlotte Gardiner. Heather Karpas quickly turned and blasted a shot into the back of the cage to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead with 3:23 left in the half.
Sally Ryan made it a 4-0 game 42:35 into the contest, tipping in a shot on a penalty corner after a rocket from Liz Garry. Just 1:23 later, Gardner redirected a feed from Greer to extend the Middlebury lead. Hannah Deoul netted the first of her career with 3:29 remaining, putting in a rebound after a shot from Katherine Theiss had been saved.
Middlebury held a 28-2 shots advantage in the game, while taking 16 penalty corners, including a dozen in the first half. Caitlin Donahue had a busy afternoon for the Cavaliers, making 16 stops, 12 of them coming in the first 35 minutes. Middlebury's Becca Shaw made one save in 43:58 to earn the win, while Madeline Brooks saw 26:02 of action in relief.
